History

Spring Hill Historic Home is an 1820's rural home complete with furnishings collected over the decades by Quakers Thomas and Charity Rotch, who built the house, and by three generations of the Wales family who later lived there.

Thomas Rotch brought his flock of 400 Merino sheep to Spring Hill in 1811.  He founded the nearby town of Kendal, which has become partof Massillon, Ohio.  Charity started an early vocational school near their home.

The home was a station on the Underground Railroad.  Fugitive slaves were hidden in the upper story of the house.

The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, and we are recognized by the Friends of Freedom Society/Ohio Underground Railroad Association.

Wig and false teeth drawers, a bee room, the "secret" stairway, and a tiny children's playroom are among the favorite features.  The bake-oven in the basement family kitchen is one of the few originals operable in Ohio.

Outdoor tours include a springhouse, a smoke house, woolhouse, and milkhouse.  Old-fashioned gardens and a nature path through the woods add to the country atmosphere.  Picnic tables are available.

A Spring Hill Tale:
The Victorian double bed in the downstairs bedroom has always been referred to as "the bed William Henry Harrison slept in." When he was a Whig candidate for president in 1840, Harrison traveled the canal to Navarre, where he was met by James Duncan. He stayed at the Spring Hill and spoke in Massillon and West Brookfield before going to Canton by stagecoach.
