History

Spring Hill Historic Home is an 1820's rural home complete with furnishings collected over the decades by Quakers Thomas and Charity Rotch, who built the house, and by three generations of the Wales family who later lived there.

Thomas Rotch brought his flock of 400 Merino sheep to Spring Hill in 1811.  He founded the nearby town of Kendal, which has become partof Massillon, Ohio.  Charity started an early vocational school near their home.

The home was a station on the Underground Railroad.  Visit www.ohiomemory.org to read letters by Thomas and Charity Rotch describing the visits of fugitive slaves to their farm.

The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, and we are recognized by the Friends of Freedom Society/Ohio Underground Railroad Association.

Several original outbuildings remain on the farm, including a springhouse, a smoke house, woolhouse, and milkhouse.  Picnic tables are available.
