The City Jail was closed about a year ago so that the Massillon PD could book all prisoners at the Stark County Jail.

ok well open it back up..... or better yet rent a empty building down town & leave the front windows open so we can all walk by & look at them.

We all watch court tv so it will be just as fun.

I wish it was that easy. We all wished the jail was still open. Believe me, it would cut down on the time each officer now has to spend on arrests and booking with the ride out to 62.

Why was the jail closed and by whom?

This not only seems like a ridiculous waste of time, but takes officers too far away from the city in the case they are needed in an emergency situation. Not to mention the additional cost with gas prices as they are now. Doesn't seem to make much sense at all.

Anybody know the answer to this? I really don't and I'm VERY curious.

I believe that "cost savings" was cited as one reason, when the decision was made. It may have also allowed for another officer to be reassigned back to patrol. I'm sure our MP.com PD reps will correct me if I'm wrong....

I don't really know why the jail was closed. There was supposedly a study done sime time ago that stated it would cost more money to book prisoners in to the Stark County Jail, rather than our own City Jail. It makes sense, although I've never seen that study. One could assume that the man hours spent going to and from the jail on 62, along with the rising gas prices would make it much more costly to book there but I honestly don't know. As for the extra patrol officer on the road, we still have the same amount on a daily basis. Its called minimum manpower. Taking the guy out of the jailer position doesn't do much there. Our jail, when it was opened, was efficient and well run. Your guess is as good as mine as to why the administration wanted to close it. If I had to take a guess it would be the "liability" issue.
