NFL steps up monitoring of players for gang signs
NEW YORK (AP)—The NFL is stepping up its monitoring of on-field player activities to ensure that no one is flashing the hand signals of street gangs.
The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that the league had hired experts to look at game tapes and identify players or team officials who might be using suspected gang signals. Violators would be warned and disciplined if the episodes recurred.
League officials said Tuesday that avoiding gang-related activities has long been stressed.
They said the scrutiny was intensified after the shooting death of Denver cornerback Darrent Williams in 2007 after Williams was involved in a dispute with known gang members. Anti-gang information is included in orientation literature and stressed in the annual mandatory league meeting for rookies.
The NFL took further notice after Paul Pierce of the NBA’s Boston Celtics was fined $25,000 in April for what the league said was a “menacing gesture” toward the Atlanta Hawks’ bench. “I 100 percent do not in any way promote gang violence or anything close to it.” Pierce said in a statement. “I am sorry if it was misinterpreted that way at Saturday’s game.”
The Times said that was the precipitating incident for the NFL.
“We were always suspicious that might be happening,” it quoted Mike Pereira, the NFL’s vice president of officiating, as saying of gang-related signals. “But the Paul Pierce thing is what brought it to light. When he was fined … that’s when we said we need to take a look at it and see if we need to be aware of it.”

You can thank Paul Anthony Pierce...the NFL is doing this because of him and a gesture he made to the Atlanta Hawks in a playoff game!

Dawg- thanks for the info on signs. On my forays to the east side of Cleve I sometimes flash what I think are signs at the drug boys on Eddy road. I'll work on some of the signs you put up. Should be fun!

YEAH-- and I have never seen a NFL or NBA player throw a gang sign in a game and I watch VERY frequently!!
Celebration is what the leagues want to get rid of and finding anyway to stop it. Even making up some BS to do it!
Showing some flare, dancing, etc,... is misunderstood by many who do not do it or cannot. However, I was always flashy and energetic because it makes it fun. Most dances have hand movements---- maybe some culteral awareness classes are needed to understand the differance:tonguewave:

I liked the way Barry Sanders celebrated. After scoring a TD, he would walk over and habd the ball to the official , and then go to the sidelines.
Morons like Ocho Cinco have made it so that the NFL must curb everyone. ACT LIKE YOU'VE SCORED A TD BEFORE !!

Not really bothered me that a person celebrated! I felt bad one game my senior year that I was cheering to the crowd after a sack not knowing I broke his collar bone on the hit! Well, they were trash talking all game but I never played to injure opponents. However, sometimes alittle celebration excites your team to give more energy IMHO and vice versa. If an opponent celebrated on me----I would make him pay the next series for sure!

Those are some mean gang signs. Holy cow!
monte81,
They ought to let high schoolers start taunting in the end zone. That will be real fun! Can YOU imagine a player from your alma mater stepping over a fallen opponent in the end zone after a touchdown and taunting was permitted?
I can see it now:
Before: "#9 for Detroit Kilpatrick High School flashed the letter B in the end zone with a finger and three others over a fallen St. Ignatius defender in the end zone! That's representing your heritage! The Brethren have come to play!"
After (Kilpatrick head coach Keno Sultan): "We were added in the Herbstreit Challenge to be a stepping stone for the Wildcats but hey, you know what? We have proud brothers from Detroit that will represent what playing for the Brethren is all about. When our pride is on the line, we knew who to turn to and that was the difference. I'm open to any questions along with my other four players, #9, #22, #38, and #45.
Have a little fun !!!

Keno, what kind of a nutty statement is that??? You WANT the kids taunting each other in the endzone? For what reason? So that we can have fights breaking out on the fields when they are supposed to be playing football?
Let the kids do their "talking" on the field with their play. Talk is cheap. Then the celebrating can come afte they've earned their victory.

Kamd50,
What are the chances that a fight break out in the end zone? It's up to the other player to turn his back.
They OUGHT to make ME the commissioner of the OHSAA...I'll allow spiking the ball, taunting, and all that other stuff!
Now let me ask you a serious question: Say a defender from a Baltimore high school gets beaten on a route for a TD. Not that he would do this but say for example your son steps over the downed defender and does a throat-slash gesture at him. He's having the game of his life. You're telling me you would lambaste him if he did that? I love you dearly but if you lambasted him for it.........

"What are the chances a fight would break out in the end zone" as a result of taunting? Are you serious? What are the chances of a fight breaking out at football camp as a result of unprovoked taunting?:wall:
And Hell yes, he would get a lambasting from me but much worse from his father! I never want to see the day that any of my kids display any type of that classless, thug-style poor sportsmanship.

Kamd50,
Spoken like the true native of the hometown you are. You did good not to get suckered in by my attempt to use the breakout game. Anyone else I would have broken on the spot.
Gang signs have no place in today's athletics. I'm for everything else but those.
