So if I read it right its a fight over building a new store or leaving it a park?

No...it is an argument over what to do with the 3 million they get from the sale. Elum is saying that money can only be used to build ballfields, nothing else. They can't use it for the golf courseor anything hat does not resemble the original intent of the gift - ballfields.

We could become the ballfield capital of the world with 3 million dollars in new ballfields.

You know, for such a small town, there is way too much politics and bullcrap going on around here. I am tired of it.

The Indy has a Cheers and Jeers editorial every now and then, here is my version
CHEERS To the Mayor for his hard work in getting Kohls to build in Massillon

Jeers To Elum for not keeping his nose on his side of the building, the judge is just that, a judge.

Jeers To the Indy for trying to MAKE HAY over one of the best, most needed, and well priced dept. store to hit our town in many years.

I hope they stay the course and not be chased out of town by a couple of power crazed Judicial elected Blokes.

What about the empty stores over at the Massillon Market Place? Shouldn't they be filled before we bring in more retail? While I think that our mayor does a good job, it seems to me he didn't do his homework here, and now is going to throw a temper tantrum if anything gets in his way at this late date. It's been common knowledge that the land was to be used as green space or a park of some kind. He's been trying to skirt this all along.

Huh? The Mayor does not make the decision for which stores come to town and where they are utlimately located. The market data decides that!

Regarding the park, it may be common knowledge, but your facts are wrong. No deed restrictions prevent this. Not arguing one way or the other, but during though economic times, setting aside the "feel good" decisions may be necessary to pay the bills.

IMHO.. we don't need anymore retail..WE NEED JOBS (Industrial, commercial, etc).. The national economy has smacked us in the mouth.

Easier said than done. Any concrete suggestions on how to bring these jobs to the area.

I think we need Kohl's in the City. I don't see any big industrial "giants" wanting to re-locate to Massillon so we ought to be grateful for what we can get. This area needs a store like Kohl's. I'm getting really tired of driving to Belden Village and dealing with all of that freakin traffic just to buy some clothes. It will be nice to have something three minutes away!

I don't have a dog in the fight, but isn't it a little late in the process for Judge Elum to be bringing this up? Most of this information, from the city selling the land, to the proposed use of the funds by the city has been public for many months. Why now when the deal is about to be closed?

The sale of Genshaft will help keep the Legends open.
Doesn’t Judge Elum know that golf courses keep the drinkers off the road and in golf carts where they belong

Ohio and Stark Co. aren't too friendly when it comes to recruiting Industrial and Commerial growth. High state taxes and the "old union mentality" of the blue collar labor force are the primary reasons.

Depends on who you ask. I like both of them for different reasons. Both can be quality leaders, BUT politics does get in the way and that's too bad.

regarding obie 7661's; 'Any concrete suggestions?' comment.. that wasn't my point; if I had suggestions, I would be running for mayor..my point was that in our current times, this area is retailed out IMO. :Oo:

Ok lets say he is right, do we encourage the Mayor and council to look for exceptions? So will can benifit from one of the most reasonable dept stores to come down the pike? As pointed out, it will be nice not to go to Belden with the price of gas at 4.09 a gal.
Or do we have a ticker tape parade for the man who single handedly crushed our chance to improve the area and our life style?
My Momma once told me that attorneys who become judges are lawyers who can't make it in a private practice. Any GOOD att. makes a bundle in there private practices.
Just goes to show yea Momma knows best!
