Quest for ESPN’s Title Town

There will be a rally for the 2008 edition of the Massillon Tigers on Monday July 21st at 6:00 PM in Paul Brown Tiger Stadium!

The event will be MC’ed by the voice of the Tiger’s, Walk Bronczek. The Massillon Tiger Cheerleaders and the Tiger Swing band will kick off the festivities followed by Head Coach Jason Hall’s introduction of his finalized 2008 coaching staff and comments on the upcoming season.

Massillon finalist
in ESPN contest

Massillon was named as a finalist in ESPN's ''TitleTown USA'' search in an announcement over the weekend on SportsCenter.

Fans will have the opportunity in late July (date and time to be determined) to support Massillon's selection as a finalist when ESPN visits a pep rally at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. From July 24 to 27, fans may vote to name Massillon as TitleTown USA at http://www.ESPN.com. The winner will be announced July 28 on SportsCenter.

Any chance some former Tigers show up? We need to get the word out that we need them once again. We need to pull out all stops to win this thing. I would reschedule vacations and make all possible changes and plans to be there. The Tigers need you and Massillon needs you. Lets win this thing. Go Tigers

UPDATE: 1:40 PM, Wednesday, July 9, 2008
GATEHOUSE OHIO GROUPMultimedia

MASSILLON The city of Massillon has planned a pep rally for 6 p.m. July 21 inside Paul Brown Tiger Stadium for ESPN's first-ever "TitleTown USA" search.

ESPN will be in town then to film a segment about the history and tradition of Massillon sports, most notably high school football. The segment is scheduled to air July 23 during the 6 p.m. edition of SportsCenter. It will re-air at 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. the same night

"We need to get fired up," Massillon athletics director Tim Ridgley said. "We need to get our people to support us."

The pep rally will feature Massillon head football coach Jason Hall as well as the Tiger Swingsters and Massillon cheerleaders. There is no charge for admission. There also will be 7-on-7 varsity and junior varsity team scrimmages during the rally.

Ridgley said the event will take a lot of work to put together, but the national recognition is worth it.

"I'm more worried about getting this off without any glitches," Ridgley said. "We want to present this to the country in the right manner. We'll need the support of a lot of people."

Fans will be able to vote for Massillon on ESPN.com from July 24-26. The winner of the 2008 "TitleTown USA" search will be announced July 27 at 11 p.m.

The taped segments about each city also will air on ESPN Classic (SportsCentury) from 2-6 p.m. leading into ESPN's SportsCenter profile during the 6 p.m. show.

Some of the major cities in the competition are Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Boston. Other lesser known cities in the event are Palo Alto, Calif., Gainesville, Fla., Valdosta, Ga., and Parkersburg, W.Va.

Massillon may not be the most well-known city, but Ridgley said the city still stands a great chance of winning.

"We're right there with them," Ridgley said. "You're comparing apples to apples. We have just as many championships as the pro teams, and we have as much a chance to win it as anybody."

ESPN Classic is set to air "Go Tigers!", a documentary about Massillon football, from 2-4 p.m. July 23. ESPN Classic also will air a special about the 100th game between McKinley and Massillon from 4-6 p.m.

An ESPN spokesperson said it has not been determined who ESPN will interview to represent Massillon or what the segments during their stop here will focus on.

Subject: ESPN's Rachel Nichols to Host TitleTown USA Segment in Massillon

For Immediate Release
July 15, 2008

ESPN’s Rachel Nichols Will Host TitleTown USA in Massillon

ESPN’s E:60 correspondent Rachel Nichols will host the TitleTown USA segment in Massillon on Monday, July 21. Nichols will interview Steve Luke at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium at 6 p.m. Planned activities include introduction of the Tiger football team, a performance by the Tiger Swingsters and the Massillon cheerleaders.

In support of Massillon’s campaign to capture the TitleTown USA, current ESPN analyst and former Tiger great Chris Spielman stated, “"As anyone who knows me will tell you, I love high school football. Massillon's proud tradition of high school football championships as well as its place in history as the birthplace of American football naturally lends itself to being declared 'TitleTown USA' by ESPN. I encourage fans to come out to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium on Monday, July 21 to show viewers across the country why Massillon deserves to win this honor. Go Tigers!"

The segment will air on July 23 during the 6 p.m. SportsCenter with re-airs at 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.

From July 24 - 27, fans will be able to vote to name Massillon as TitleTown USA at www.espn.com with the winner announced on SportsCenter on July 27.

Was anyone else expecting at least 10,000 to be there?I think the biggest thing that has negatively affected the program, moreso than coaches or playcalling,is the erosion of the communities support over the years.
The crowd would've been 3 times larger in our heyday.
Maybe the rain kept some away.

You don't get 10,000 for games. Why would you expect 10,000 for this. And no, there would NOT have been 3x there at ANY point in time in Tiger history. This is just ludicrous thinking, in my opinion.
