Just received this in my email and wanted to share with those who are interested. And TC, please do not poopoo this thread! I happen to be proud of my son being in the top six as I am of his other teammates who did well in these events. And yes, they know that doesn't automatically make them great football players, but their hard work and dedication to being TIGERS will:tig:

With everyone making a HUGE deal out of Michaels's scores, ( and they should ), it looks like as a team , we are in HUGE trouble. Aaron came in at 6th, and Michael's score is more than 50% higher than his !!
Aaron's 64.02, which is 6th place, is only 17% better than 12th place.
I would like to see some national averages to get a REAL feel for how this scale works.
Either must be a STEEP curve, since we only have 8 guys over 58.11, or we're in trouble.
Could also be that some of our kids are new to some of the techniques and tests.
Perhaps Michael's scores are just THAT incredible and the team is doing well, or Michael's scores are THAT incredible, and the rest of the team is WAY behind.
I don't agree with posting EVERYONE'S scores. The top 20 would be good. It doesn't need to be published that somebody had the WORST performance.
Sounds like this will be a good off season activity though !! :ers:

Congratulations to Aaron for being the 6th best score on the team and the highest of his class! I think it's good to do these tests and see how kids score and compare them to the rest of the country. It could be a motivating factor to get stronger & faster, but it could also be a negative/demotivating thing if you didn't score as well too.
I'm not poo-pooing anything, I just feel that these tests don't mean a thing when it comes to playing football. Sure, the better vertical jump you have shows that you have hip & leg strength, the faster 40-yd time you have will help you if your on a long run or chasing down an opponent, etc. How many times will you do a 5-10-5 shuttle during a football game?
I think the real advantage of these tests is to see if a kid can mentally challenge himself to excel and overcome the little voice that says, "Stop, this is too hard" and "I can't do this". If you can overcome that hurdle, you will go far because that voice comes out quite often during a football practice and game situations. Mental conditioning is just as important as physical conditioning, in my mind. (No pun intended!)
By the way, Dawg, you can see results of other schools and other combines by clicking on the names above Massillon High School. Look at the combine they had in Columbus. A couple kids scored 131's. And Kamd50, you were up awfully late last night posting this (3:00 am??). What the heck is the matter with you? LOL!

LOL You just wait, TC! It's only a matter of time before the insomnia kicks in. It will probably start sometime when those little darlings hit their later teen years:wink:
What I liked was the writer's front page write up about Massillon. And Dawg, we are NOT in trouble! Didn't you read what TC said? "I just feel that these tests don't mean a thing when it comes to playing football". : ) Practices are going good so far. Also, don't overlook the fact that some kids did not participate for w/e reasons, including Grunder and JT. Don't know how true it is or not, but I was also told that since Massillon's events had to be taken indoors that it put them at somewhat of a disadvantage.
Michael Clark's high rating just means that he did that well in the events nationwide, and good for him! It should only make the rest of the team strive to better themselves by using the suggested drills and videos to work on the areas they need to improve in. Competition within one's own team should always be a motivational thing for any athlete. I know that once it was found out Sparq was coming to town, my kid and his buddies were out in the back yard measuring off and practicing for the events. Point being, they were motivated enough to want to do well in this thing.

Just curious if pretty much the whole team took part in this and if the 40 times were electronically timed?

Yes, they were electronically timed. There were 60 kids listed on the site. With the exception of the two players I mentioned earlier, I do not know how many more were not present, sorry.

If they were timed electronically then the times should be accurate.

lol he was electronically timed in wisconson aswell. doing it in the gym would hurt the 40s but help the agility because of the space and surface.

With the exception of Myers, did not see many Oline guys (Juniors and Seniors) at this event?

Today our “indoor” 40 yard dashes are conducted in the school hallways. They are biased high due to slippage from running on polished tile flooring. The new indoor football field will be ideal for these evaluations.

Are you telling me that they cant run in the outfield of the baseball field? Seems to me the hallways would be a little dangerous. Dont the teachers always say "dont run in the hallways"?

Something has to be off on the 40 times. I can't believe we only have 2 or 3 kids under a 5 flat? No way. I also noticed that alot of the names listed are incoming freshman. Not many varsity players are listed.

Running in the building is generally only done in during the winter. I have no idea why they would do it now. I do know from watching this in the past that starting (and stopping) traction pretty much stinks running on industrial flooring.
I just hope they weren't carrying scissors!

Tiger, I at first was also a little concerned about our team speed when I seen our forty times but you also have to throw in the fact that it is an electronically timed 40 and that it is the middle of the summer and not too many players have been doing speed drills all summer to run the best forty time of their life. If these 40's were hand timed then I would be a bit concerend about our team speed but not too concerened, it is still way to early and if that is the case then we just won't be running past too many people on deep passes.

Did they run them in the halway for the SPARQ traning? I just find that hard to believe seeing they have the turf and they were electronically timed. When I played we ran our 40's inside in the hall way by the weight room but ours were hand timed by coach Studer and Coach ty. We used to have to spit on the soles of our shoes for traction. However that shouldn't hinder the 40 times, we had many people including myself ( I know that is hard to believe) who ran under a 5.0

Participating in this event were: 12 Freshmen
21 Sophomores
14 Juniors
13 Seniors
There may have been some kids that were away on vacation or with minor injuries. And possibly some Seniors could have been away pursuing other commitments.
DL, I believe the running was done in the gym as the pics from the website show.

I was somewhat suprised at all the 40's in the 5's at first, but after looking at all the other schools alot of kids at skill positions were around five so I'm not sweating it just yet. That said, I hope coach Hall brings in a real speed training program again. Every year it's those teams that have the speed that seem to end up on top, especially on defense. Plus kids like Turner and Grunder were missing and probably a few others..
