I just can't see this being a positive outcome for our youth. Why not a bowling alley, miniature golf, outdoor theatre, outdoor public pool and play area. There are alot of other avenues to go down to give the youth of Massillon a place to go and hang out. Why does it have to be a mock bar environment-- ages 14-18 (trouble there already) And how about the Wednesday night "foam night" with young girls clad in bathing suits and covered in bubbles. Are they for real?????????
Come on Massillon, if we expect better for our youth than we have to give them better.

It's REAL simple. The things that you mentioned , don't bring in BIG MONEY !! This is the new America, where greed and the almighty buck rule the world.
All the bowling alleys closed down because they were losing money.
Putt Putt golf in Ohio is business suicide. Unless you have $$$ to burn like the owner of Sluggers & Putters.
Public pool,.............seasonal & way too much liability.
There is no money maker that involves recreation for teens only, or someone would do it !! The old Skatery was probably the last of the 'teen hang-out' gold mines. And even it was reduced to losing money.

I agree with you DAWGH8R, but to me, as a parent, I'd rather see those things than the teen "night club" atmosphere that is proposed. The whole Foam Night thing sounds just a step away from a Wet T-Shirt contest. Too mature for teens, imo.

As parents we'd ALL love to see these things. However, kids are WAY more complex today versus when we grew up. Heck, I couldn't wait for Friday nights back in the late seventies/early 80's, so we could get out our best Levi's & go to the SKATERY!!
We were easily amused , and that was a HUGE thing. Today's kids would laugh at our forms of entertainment back them.
OTOH, the 12 year olds weren't out looking for sex partners either !
With all the trouble that today's youth seem to find themselves in, I surely wouldn't want to be responsible for them at MY place of business.
A sad but true reality.:eyemouth:

3bros,
These teen clubs scare me to a degree. I don't like the view behind it. I read about a story in Akron about a fight that happened at a club like this that ended with a young black girl gunned down outside the club.
Five guys knew about the murder but were all acquitted on charges of knowledge of a crime and failure to report it. They were all black...I wouldn't expect less.
Now forbid if something like that happens on Lincoln Way East.........

Yeah I dont expect it to last long.
Teen clubs never do. Especially in Massillon where we have violent teens.
Mark my words.
When this places closes, it will be because of violence.
However I think this is answer to the teen's cry "there's nothing to do around here!".
and the bowling alley, miniature golf, outdoor theatre, stakery, outdoor public pool and play area are about as lame and lame gets for teens. That stuff is only fun/cool if your 12 and under.
I hope this new place has local bands play. There are a lot of talented teen garage bands that dont have an outlet. This might be a smart move.
The upside is that we have another business instead of another empty building downtown.
And if you dont like your kids going to a teen club, maybe my art shows wont seem so bad.

Unfortunately you are correct on the money.(It could be done, other cities do it) I do believe however that our children will find interest in what we as parents expose them to. My oldest is graduated and starting life, my next two are 11 and 9, I sincerely hope that what I am exposing them to and the life that my spouse and I are living is an example of good, clean, VERY ENTERTAINING fun. By the time they are 14-18, HOPEFULLY and prayerfully a night in a "bar" environment won't be appealing. It will be appalling!!!!!! That they would have more self respect and desires for better things in their life.

I DISAGREE !!! My kid used to run the sound board at the skate park by Canton Centre Mall. He booked a TON of local, ( Massillon/Canton/Akron), bands that came and performed. I'm assuming they still do this. He had quite a few nights with 3 or 4 local bands performing.
And guess what ?? The local 'fans' weren't coming out in huge numbers.
However, it was an outlet for local young musicians to play, and local kids to watch.
thebili
06-25-2008, 10:55 AM
yeah I know of that skate park. but that's Canton.
And if the fans are coming, its because they may not be marketing it right. Know one knows who's playing unless you tell them. And location may have to do with attendance too.
Trendsetters may have a better chance of attracting a crowd for bands.
I guess only time will tell.

as for the WHISKEY RANCH....i really don't know how I feel about it being open as a teen club again, or solely as a teen club.....i know this gives the kids a fun place to go, if they are the right age to attend and be around this crowd and as long as everyone just has fun and it don't turn into anything else....BUT WE ALL KNOW IT WILL....just after all the things that happened in this past year behind it....as for them allowing underage kids in their establishment....they have to come up with a better way of carding the kids so we don't have a repeat year of last year.....last weekend was the first weekend it was opened and my son came home and told me that the lady behind the bar was serving 7-UP and vodka to our children....WHAT IS UP WITH THAT...and then i read in the paper the next day they have a paid massillon cop there doing security....how was this happening....???? SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHECK INTO THIS ASAP.....i have already called a few people, but it needs to be checked into and taken care of ASAP......

You know its funny we all say how this is a bad thing but what about your own kids. If you raised your OWN kids right then they would not go right. If we all have our heads on right then why should we all worry about the rest of the Massillon low lives that are sucking our taxes & air.

I'm not sure what 'SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHECK INTO' is referring to?!? Do you really believe your son when he says vodka is being served by 'some lady behind the bar.'? As it is a teen bar, there is no liquor on display. I hope you advised your son to let the officer on duty know alcohol is being served that way we can avoid the ....'how was this happening...????'

Just the other day, some old friends and I were talking about how when we were teens there was so much to do, especially in the summertime. Specifically the Elms on Thursday nights, the American Legion who hosted many Battle of the Bands and teen dances,Talley's teen night, the Mustang (I believe), and going back even farther, the Carpentar's Shack................
Granted, each locale had their fair share of mishaps, fighting, and whatnot, but we all seemed to survive all of that just fine and didn't turn into a bunch of criminals or rapists or whatnot.
The thing is, we are always complaining about our teens no matter what theydo. It's just like the skateboarding issue. Everyone complains about the kids boarding in the streets and parking lots yet we don't want to give them another venue in which they can participate in this activity without infringing on others. We don't want to see them hanging around on the streets, but don't want to provide them with a place to have fun and socialize with each other either. And at the same time, we complain about them sitting in front of a computer or tv screen for hours on end playing mindless video games.
So for now, I am holding off on an opinion and taking a wait-and-see kind of attitude. It would be nice if it could exist with the proper amount of supervision with any disturbances taken care of in a safe and efficient manner.
And personally, I highly doubt that they were serving vodka to teenagers. How does this kid know this? Did he have some? Let's be a little realistic. I drove by there, and there was security outside of the door and inside. I don't think that anybody would be that plain stupid right in front of the officers on their first night open.

LOL, I actually think I was a few years too young for Terps. I do remember my big brother getting beat up and jumpted at one of those though. Maybe that's what kept me away, rather than my young age. Anyhow, that just goes to show that kids really weren't all that different back then as all of us like to think they were. We just kind of tend to forget the unpleasant stuff when we get all naustalgic, imho.

Crappy management and pre-teens and younger helped kill the old skatery. Sometimes parents would drop off thier kids as if it was a babysitting service. Us older folks would like to have some time also without kids over running the place. But Trendsetters and the things advertised is just adding fire to an already serious proplem. As recently I have seen young girls out roaming the streets by themselves late at night. With recent abduction attempts in recent years this shows complete disconcern on our parts as well as the parents for these girls and their personal safety. The girls also dont care about themselves nor morals and think sex is fun and what "real" love is. I appoligze to anyone who may take offence to this post. Im merely trying to state sad but true facts here. Unfortunitly with places like Trendsetters, the problem is only going to get worse before it gets any better if it ever does.

Great post. The thing is we need to put a stop to this place before it can get to that point. The only reason for the switch is because Whiskey Ranch owners knew they was within an inch of being shut down. I would hope and pray this place shuts down soon and we as parents and community put pressure on this place to put an end to it once and for all.

Why not let this place be open for a little while before completely blasting it? Maybe it will turn out to be a great place for the youth of our town to spend their time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a club in Massillon.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but aren't liquor licenses somewhat hard to come by in Ohio? I think there is a limit to the amount available in each area. If I was an owner of a place like that, I wouldn't get rid of my license either. That way if I decided to put an adult place back in I would already have the license.

TigerBuckeye313,
I didn't say there was nothing wrong with having a club in Massillon. There are just some things that may be adult-oriented that teens should not be experiencing.
And a side note to a previous post I made. One of the five black males that knew about that Akron girl getting gunned down outside a teen club and not reporting it is now serving a 16-year prison sentence.
But anyways, there are other places to go out and have a good time and they don't always have to be teen clubs. Forbid if a scuffle or a series of scuffles happens there, you know better than anyone else that the same fate that hit Whiskey Ranch will hit Trendsetters too.
And not to prolong this, but how about some Massillon teens getting arrested for skateboarding on First Merit property five years ago? They all got caught by the customer service manager! Now you explain this to me!!

I believe that you are correct.
There are a certain number allowed per capita within geo-political boundaries.
By keeping their Massillon license, they have the option of opening another liquor establishment in town at a different location, or they can sell/transfer the license to another party at a profit.

HA! I love how everyone assumes they know what kids will like.
Telling teens that they shouldnt go is basically ecouraging them to. The more adults say "we dont like it", the more the kids will like it.
We were all raised to be rebels, taught to "damn the man", "fight the system"... then adults wonder whats wrong with those kids.
Of course teens want to egage in adult activities, mostly because adults ecourage them not to.
Don't blame the kids, blame the idiotic parents who used the TV as a baby-sitter.
The youth are like Frankenstein's Monster, if you know the story.
They made us who we are, now they have to deal with us. Out causing trouble wreaking havock, when really the monster just wants some simple aknowledgement and affection.
Although I am very skeptical, I hope the club owners have the best intentions, and I hope it is successful for the kids of course, but mostly because it would make adults angry. That must be the kid in me.

I think the place is a mistake. Who needs more kids downtown acting like a bunch of fools? I mean, have any of you taken a look at the downtown area on a friday and saturday night? It looks like a kid bomb exploded down there. They make their nightly swing through Speedway on Erie and Cherry, then they proceed to the Great Escapes Theater where they hang out and litter up the parking lot and shout expletives at each other all night long. After getting kicked out of there, they proceed to the downtown McDonald's where they almost always get into fights and when the Police show up they all scatter as if they were a bunch of cock roaches in a dark room and someone just turned on the lights. God forbid any of them get arrested. Then you have to deal with the parents who dropped them off down there in the first place and all they say to you is, I know my kid didn't do that! These kids need somewhere to go other than a bar atmosphere. I DO NOT have any idea what that may be, however, whatever it is it needs to be stuctured and have people in place that DO NOT allow such behavior.
