How is a HS game in Columbus, going back to his roots ?????

I would think a game with Massillon Middle School vs Canton Crenshaw or Canton Hartford on Friday Night before the Massillon vs McKinley game would be "getting back to his roots".

Funny----Chris is a C-bus guy now and only talks about Massillon on his radio show when he is debating Moellers team(college squad).

A Spielman classic without no Stark County teams??? FUNNY! The Spielamns have not set foot in Tigertown since after Sonny was not renewed as AD in 1988 when Coach Moronto left town!!!

It seems obvious that Chris S has left Massillon behind and wants little if anything to do with us. It seems this is purposeful, maybe it is about his father-I don't know. My opinion is that Massillon backed him big time and did many things for him over the years. I can tell you my opinion of him has lessened over the years, as his purposeful distance of Massillon has become obvious.

I wish everyone would lay off this guy....when he speaks of Massillon he does it with passion. SO WHAT if he doesnt do it everytime he is on TV or the Radio. If I were him and heard the way people talk about me, I wouldnt come back either.........

Do you expect him to wear a Massillon Jersey and carry around a boom box with Tiger Rag playing everywhere he goes?

And BTW.........if he does something in C-BUS its would be considered getting back to his college roots.....

Get over it people....

WOW, this post moved from Tiger Town Talk to the General Forum......SEE, this is the type of treatment I'm talking about.......Stay out of Massillon Chris!!!!

If your not picking up on what I am saying you may have damage to your parahippocampal gyrus....I would bet many of our posters may have damage in this area....

Get to Columbus often. Hear him a lot. Always speaks well and fondly of Massillon. The "roots comment" was written by the writer speaking of his Columbus Roots. Once you play at OSU you belong to them! Give the guy a break!:2thumbsup:

TigerTownTalk is for the positive promotion of Massillon sports.
Does anyone feel that this thread fits that description?

If so, please explain why.

Normally, we move any thread pertainting to alumni to the General Forum.

Exactly! When you hear sports commentators speaking of an NFL player concerning his past, they usually comment on the guy's college career when referencing where he came from.

The Spielman's have been through quite a lot of hardship with their personal battle with cancer, and they continue to bring aid in the search for a cure through this endeavor. How can anyone find fault with that? In comparison to where he played highschool ball at, well, there is none. Look at the bigger picture here and what is more important people.

YES---Chris does speak highly of Massillon and he and his wife have battled cancer and winning.

I just wished in 20 years he could take a day or 2 to come talk to our kids, attend a luncheon, etc,.... every kid in Massillon thinks of Chris as a legend and it wouldn't hurt to help them out from time to time with some knowledge, liff lessons, etc,... maybe the coach needs to place a phone call. Oh, I forgot---- we look at tradition differant these days! I guess the greatest players in massillon only played from 2000-2007 and are the ONLY former players expected to come back and help our kids!:help:

The cause that this event is being sponsored for is far more important than Massillon Football. I would trade all 22 state championships and more, if they could find a cure for cancer.
Columbus is where he became a national celebrity. Columbus is where he lives. Columbus is where he and his wife have battled this ugly disease.
Good luck Chris.

I dont understand, Are you backing me or opposing my stand?

All I am saying is if a person speaks so highly of a place then why not EVER visit or come see what it has become. I am not saying Chris owes massillon anything but if I was him I would want to help the program that helped me. 1 or 2 days in 20 years wouldn't take much time--its only 1 hour and 20 minutes away. Chris must of forgot how much the "Torture Chamber" helped his career on Wales RD. at a famous coaches basement all those years!!

Giant Lugey----the cause is greater than massillon football and not what we are talking about. We all feel for Stephanie and her battle with cancer, my grandma died of cancer in 2005. I applaud the game and the cause but he doesn't really care about Massillon except we put on the Wheaties box!

Chris has a fabulous camp down here in C-bus(use to be in massillon) and the classic will be a good day because he has great teams involved and I wish him luck. I just wished he would come back from time to time for the sake our kids.

Mike Doss has a camp in Canton every year, LeCharles Bentley donates full tuition to a Iggy student every year, Chris Chambers holds a camp in Cleveland each year, Eric Snow has bball summer camps and donated money to redo hartford middle schools playground. Chris only talks about the love for Massillon-----SHOW US sometimes! People in situations to change others lives for the better in your home community keeps tradition, uplifts spirits, and gives kids a vision to excel. What Massillon Tiger does that---Tom Hannon and Steve Luke did it when I was a kid but times have changed and where you from takes a back seat to where you are at---I guess!

i know as an athlete despite being the whitest athlete in massillon history i worked hard for myself, there was nothing anyone famous or modest could say that would motivate me more or less.
There's a big diff between inner city canton, cleveland and columbus than massillon.
to me he is doing massillon a great thing. he's putting on games that will benefit some great causes. for me being a christain in massillon it makes me happy to see someone finally do something for kids that really need it even if they aren't from the same high school we graduated from.
it's just nice for once to read about someone from massillon doing something positive and meaningful rather than getting arrested for possession of crack cocain or raping a 12yrold girl. you seem to hint about kids using him as a rolemodel he seems to fit that discription to me.

I agree with both of your posts, mike. And I agree with Monte as well as far as it would be nice if Mr.Spielman would make a visit with the team every once in a while or be involved in a camp or something of that nature. However, I wonder if any coach has actually ever invited him to do so:scratchchin: Or approached him as these people apparantly have to get involved in such a project?

The good that this particular project will generate, regardless of where it is being held, is what really matters in this particular instance.

http://chrisspielman.com/video-clips.html

I'm sorry, but I actually laughed out loud at that comment.

However, I applaud Chris and Stefanie for the good work they're doing to raise awareness and help find a cure for cancer. Stefanie is a former classmate of mine at JHS and I don't think she comes back to Jackson every year and does a bunch of benefits there- but frankly, I don't expect her to, as she has lived in Columbus for years now and calls it home.

Stefanie has now survived three bouts with breast cancer. She and Chris established the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The James Hospital and when they started the fund, they pledged to raise $1 million to be dedicated to breast cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The James has raised approximately $5 million since 1999.

I just really commend her and Chris for all the hard work they're doing and I wish them both much success and good health. I think they are both really good people, regardless of how much they do or don't mention Massillon. Besides, this football game is to help raise money for cancer research. It's not about Chris' high school football career. If he can use his status as a former All-Pro NFL player to achieve their goal, why not? I think it's an excellent idea, and shows even more how dedicated of a husband and family man that Chris is. He has stood by Stefanie and been super supportive throughout all her bouts with cancer, so to see him establishing this Football Classic as another means to help really speaks volumes about the kind of guy he is and his character. I don't get why anyone would question him or his motives after all his family has been through over the years.

The Facts:

*
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States.
*
One out of every eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.
*
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women between the ages of 35 and 55.
*
The cure rate for breast cancer is 90 percent or greater if it is detected in its earliest stages.

My only question is, "When will Massillon be invited to play in this Classic?" Wouldn't it be great to see an old-time Massillon v. Upper Arlington game? That brings back some childhood memories! Let's look into it!

[QUOTE=giant lugey;109123]Columbus is where he became a national celebrity.QUOTE]

Not true. He became a nationally known name when the great citizens of Massillon put him on the Wheeties box.

I've had the honor to meet Chris a couple times. He is a remarkable person and the things he and his wife have done is amazing. But it would be nice for Chris to visit Massillon. Many of the other "high profile Massillon guys" make visits. Look at David Canary, doesn't he come back every year? Paul Brown has quoted that the best job he ever had was in Massillon.

It would be nice to have Chris give us an invitation to his Spielman Classic. But if it doesn't happen, there's no reason to be sour over it. Even if he won't admit being from Massillon, or if Massillon turns a cold shoulder to him. He will always be a Massillon Tiger

To my knowledge spielman lived in Massillon for four or five of 42 or 43 years of life. That hardly makes him a massillon native to me and certainly he doesnt owe massillon anything. Massillon used him for football and he used massillon for football. Case closed!

So, basically because he didn't grow up in Massillon he is not a "native" and doesn't owe Massillon anything. I hardly think Massillon just used him for football. The amount of support he has received over the years has been superior to what most Massillon athletes have ever received. Good lord, the guy was treated like a prince from high school on. The people of Massillon went above and beyond to support him at high school, college and pro ball and also provided both of his parents jobs in our school system for several years, even after he was done playing football here. What would be the matter with Chris coming back so often and having a camp or something to show his appreciation for the community that did support him? It is not a question of owing us, it is a question of showing some gratitude. I don't think guys like Luke , Hannon or Canary have been involved at times over the years, because they think they owe the community. I think their involvement is about showing appreciation for the support their endevors have received even beyond Massillon football.

Its not about us adults, or fans. He used us we used him blah blah. Its about the kids. And there is not a city in the world, including Columbus, he could have a more profound impact on. Massillon kids to this day idolize him. He is a great guy, a great husband/father, etc etc etc, but this is what separates him from the Snows, Doss's, McClouds, of the world. Or the Studers, Lukes, Bruce. Thats just fact, doesn't make him bad.

By the way Purple Army, no one here needs lectured on cancer or their personal battles. This town was devasted by the news. You cant count the multitude of PA announcements at ball games w/ condition updates during that time, and continued support for fundraisers in their name, articles, etc etc etc, to this day. I would bet ALOT of money the citizens of Massillon have contributed more to this cause because of him, and her, than any place else.

I heard Chris speak a few years ago at the Ireland Cancer Center at Mercy Hospital. He was very good and his talk was very inspirational. He and Stephanie have been though a lot and I’m sure this, taking care of their family, careers and working for the cause takes most of their time.

Chris did spend a lot of his life in Stark County though and it would really be nice if he could host a Relay for Life event here. There are many struggles going on in our area and I’m sure with his name and notoriety, he could come back to his “roots” and could raise a lot of money for the cause of fighting cancer.

I think we've done ok on the national scene before and after. No one is ever bigger than the program. Whether its ESPN, ABC, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, or Las Vegas we are represented, because we are freaking crazy. And I got 14 boxes of Wheaties to prove it, lol. The problem was the spotlight (and pressure) put on a 17 yo. Who knows how any of us would have dealt.

Well nobody is more famous than PB and he's burried here. Bruce has come back often. I've heard famous alumni/ex coaches like Strang, Mather, etc announced over the PA system at our games many times, to rousing ovations. Didn't Strang give a pep talk before the Mck game just a couple years ago? Studer. Luke. More than you think. But not many guys are as famous as CS the past 30 years. Give the guy a break. Ads an 8th grader he told Jack Rose while at Aquinas the Knights were the only team he wanted to play for growing up. His dad gets a job at Massillon and he's a Tiger!

Give it up, the guy is not a home grown Tiger, never was and never will be. He brought plenty of value to Tigertown. He is what he is.

I would bet ALOT of money the citizens of Massillon have contributed more to this cause because of him, and her, than any place else.

For the record, I wasn't "lecturing" anyone about cancer. I was simply posting a few of the great things that Chris and Stef have done over the years to raise money for research and such through Stef's foundation.

And we at Jackson were all just as devastated by the news of Stef's cancer, as she is one of our Jackson Wall of Fame Alumni, and many people associated with Jackson Local Schools became involved with cancer donations and fundraisers due in large part to Stefanie's foundation. I think it's wonderful that Massillon did as well. Every bit helps.

As far as listing a few statistics about cancer- I just thought it might get people who read this site to possibly check out their foundation and maybe donate a few bucks. Nothing wrong with that? Right? My aunt survived a bout with breast cancer last year, and I've lost 3 first cousins to Lymphoma cancer in the past 19 years, as well as surviving a malignant parotid tumor of my own back in 2002, so I'm always willing to post whatever info I feel will help bring more awareness and get others involved in doing what they can to help find a cure.

Regarding the Football Classic, why not get a petition going through this site or through the booster club or season ticket holders, etc. something in order to have the Massillon AD or administration write to Chris and Stef's foundation to see if Massillon could play in it for next year or something like that? Instead of waiting to be "invited", why not ask for an invitation? It's for a great cause, and I'll bet Massillon fans would buy TONS of tickets (which means lots of cash for cancer research!) and I'm sure the Spielmans would be happy to have Massillon play in the game as well!

I always wondered why Chris never came back to Massillon for all these years too. What I do know is that he is a person of the highest character and did so much for the town while he played here. Maybe he hasn't been invited back? I would be surprised if the booster club or coach Hall invited him back for a speaking engagement and he did not come. Also, there might just be something we don't know about that keeps him away. Anyway, I will always give him a free pass because of how he represented Massillon when he was here. He is without a question the best high school football player I ever seen.
