Ohio State quarterback Antonio Henton is expected to transfer to Georgia Southern soon, according to several sources close to the team.
Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel refused to confirm the move today, saying only that Henton, “is a good kid.”
Henton would be the second OSU quarterback to leave the program since January, when Rob Schoenhoft transferred to Delaware.
The move would leave the Buckeyes very inexperienced at the position. The job of backing up fifth-year senior Todd Boeckman would fall to redshirt freshman Joe Bauserman and true freshman Terrelle Pryor.
Attempts to reach Henton and his family were unsuccessful. His high-school coach at Peach County (Ga.), Rance Gillespie, is now the offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern. He did not immediately return a call.
Henton, who would be a third-year sophomore in the fall, is taking summer-session classes at Ohio State. The session ends July 18, and Georgia Southern’s fall practice opens July 30.
Georgia Southern competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), so Henton could play immediately and have three years of eligibility remaining.
Georgia Southern is in Statesboro, about 150 miles east of Henton’s hometown of Fort Valley.
