He said he was taking time off, he never said he was done for the year. I dunno where banks heard that.

I see him skipping the British Open and coming back for the PGA Championship. He said a few years ago that the only tournaments that interest him were the majors.

He's having knee (ACL) surgery. If he's ready by next March I'll be impressed. Def not this summer.

That certainly changes things.

Dude won the US Open with a stress fracture in his leg. Unbelievable!

Dude beat an old 45 y/o with one shot in his bag (draw) that ends up as a snap hook a quarter of the time, a poor putter, and a short game of the 150th ranked player. It speaks volumes of the competition on tour right now. Outside of Tiger, not one of these guys would break top 25 rankings in Jack's day. If Tiger looks like a man amongst boys, it's b/c he is. But that's not saying much for him given the tour.

Well, I guess this gives the other golfers a shot at winning something for the next year or so.

The competiton on the tour has never been better, my friend. In Nicklaus' day there were less than ten players that had legitimate shots to win golf tournaments. If you look at the number of first-time winners in the last 2-3 years you can see that the dynamic has COMPLETELY changed and that the competition on tour has never been better. What you fail to, or just don't WANT to grasp is the fact that Tiger Woods mentally is light years ahead of anyone on the tour and that perpetuates into his physical success on the tour. The U.S. Open has been won MANY times by people in the same age range as Rocco Mediate so this isn't as far-fetched as you make it seem, buddy.

Anyway, just my thoughts and opinions on the subject. I hope that clarifies my position a little better.

The competition on tour is FAR from better than it's ever been. The only one on tour now who has a complete game is Tiger. That's it. Less than 10 who had legitimate shots of winning in Jacks era.. LOL come on now Carl. I know you didn't just say that. Name 10 in this era who has more of a legitimate shot to win than anyone in Jacks era. Better yet... who has ever made any kid of push in Tigers era... Phil, Vijay and David duval for about 10 seconds. Now lets look at who |Jack had to deal with..Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Hale Irwin, Raymond Floyd, Johnny Miller. There's NO comparison b/w the two eras. NONE WHATSOEVER.
Mentally tough? Someone who's mentally tough doesn't let a camera click bother him. Someone who's mentally tough doesn't let background movement bother him. Tiger may be clutch... but he's not mentally tough. He's distracted WAY too easily to be mentally tough.
It's not about Roccos age, it's his game. And the fact that he was in position to win a US Open speaks volumes for the talent on tour. No freaking pro who plays one shot, can't putt, and can't chip should ever be in the position to win a US Open. I don't care if he was 25 or 45, you need more tools than that. To say the talent on tour is better than it's ever been is laughable.

My son, you misunderstood what I said. I didn't say the talent was BETTER. I said the competition was better, meaning that more players have a shot to win today than they EVER did when Nicklaus (who I STILL think is the greatest player ever) played. MORE does NOT mean better. More means more. That was my point. The guys you listed, all better than whoever the top five are today were the ONLY ones that had a legitimate chance to win when the tournament started on Thursday. Today, about 50-60 could win. Are they better? Nope. Are there more of them? Yep. Hopefully that clears up what I was trying to say.

Oh, as far as Rocco's "game"? There's a guy over in Orlando (Lee Jantzen) who won TWO U.S. Opens with the same type of game as Rocco.

I'm not really totally disagreeing with you. I'm just telling you Tiger is head and shoulders above everybody else.

Paul Brown

And you're right, he's leaps and bounds better than everyone else on tour. But I just don't buy that the competition is better. Golf was a lot more fun to watch back in the day for two reasons...
People made a lot more golf shots than today (which is why I think the competition was better)
On TV they didn't show Jack every hole like they do Tiger. You saw damn near everyone out there. If people would go to the tourneys, they'd appreciate golf a lot more b/c they'd see that there's actually some good golf shots being made despite what TV shows. If Tiger didn't do it, you didn't see it on TV.

I couldn't agree more. At The Wachovia last year I only watched Tiger two holes. I really enjoyed watching Geoff Ogilvy because his wife was there walking with him and she is freaking FLAME-THROWING hot!!

LOL Isn't it funny how the better the player is, the better looking his wife seems to be? You bring up a good point though.. people have no idea how many hot girls in skirts and sleeveless v-neck shirts there are at a PGA tournament.
