Personally I don't like it. They get a minor leaguer, outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, who in a limited AAA career hits for average and has speed and a PTBNL. For whatever reason, BB has been the Indians' whipping boy this year just as Casey Blake was last year.
This trade will come back to bite the Indians in the fanny.

what else is new for the indians in the past about forty years??? sign young talent, start to develop them and then trade them away just as they are hitting their stride...
except for those few short years in the mid90s...cleveland is the major league farm team for the rest of the teams...
it is absolutely pitiful for them to continue to call themselves a "major league team"...and for them to get our hopes up every year, only to end up in the basement (or close to it) by the all-star game...and they wonder why they aren't selling out the jake like they were a few years ago...
the sad thing is that cincy really isn't all that much better...they just have a more recent history of success than the indians...
and they expect us to continue to pay the big bucks to go to the games??? personally, i would rather watch a team like the mud hens where they are trying to get noticed and actually playing ball...than these guys who are getting paid ridiculously high salaries...with very little to show for them...
there just is not a man alive who is worth a million bucks in any sports...
that is where major sports went wrong...making them think they are so very wonderful...and look at how many are really nothing but trouble
and you and i (joe sports fan) foot the bill for what???
i have probably been to my last major sports event because i refuse to pay such ridiculous prices for tickets / parking and refreshments just for the cheap seats...i will sit at home, until they take that away too (which they probably will eventually), watching the games in the comfort of my recliner, five feet from the frig and the potty
and what they charge for an ohio state game is outrageous too...and that is college...
signed a disgusted indians/ reds/ browns/ bengals/ ohio state fan

Bev - I think the starting ticket price for Michigan is $59.
Really you can't beat high school football and basketball for the money. Actually, that's all we will be able to afford soon.

Hopefully it's to make room at first base for Victor Martinez, who isn't good enough to play catcher??

The fire sale is on! 4 more days. Anyone else on the block? Way to go Tribe (management). :glare:

That sums up my sentiments. If they hurry they can give away Hollandsworth and Westbrook for a Triple-A player. But wait, theres more! If they act now, the Indians will thrown in a new set of bats (not the Albert Belle corked variety) absolutely free!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! We are talking about Ben Broussard...the guy who is so good he hasn't hit against lefties all year. I personally like the guy but he hasn't put up the numbers you need for a corner infielder. He's hitting fine against righties but he is HORRIBLE against left handed pitching which is why he was platooning. First base has to be a run producing position and he wasn't making the grade. Hopefully this will allow the Tribe to bring Garko and finally give him a shot to show what he can do. It should also let Victor play more at first (which I still do not like BTW).
Benny wasn't a "core player" and I don't think he'll ever be better than he is right now.

I remember people saying the same thing about Pronk (not claiming he'll ever be that good. But just give him away?)
Are the Indians truly making a "youth movement" or just dumping salaries? There's a difference. Victor has gone from the "catcher of the future" to a first baseman? C'mon. Is there something wrong with his arm or what?

Whatever the reason, he can't throw anyone out.
The Tribe is, was and always will be, baffling.

LTFT, Dude, come on. Hafner and Broussard both got their first playing time in '03. It's not like we havn't given Broussard the time to develop and we are giving up on a prospect. He's not Brandon Phillips. He's something like 27 or 28 with 3 full years of major league experience. If we were going to keep him, how much time do you give him? He makes stupid, boneheaded errors in the field and hits lefties soooo bad they bench him.

From this article:
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
"Broussard hit .321 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs in 88 games with the Indians, but was spotty defensively and committed seven errors."
I'm not saying he's a superstar but for a platoon player he's solid. Sure his defense has been down this season but what about Boone, Martinez, Belliard, etc.?
What the Mariners say about the deal:
"They're in a position where they're moving some of their better players and it just so happened that two of those players fit what our needs are," said Mariners associate general manager Lee Pelekoudas, who brokered the deals. "We stayed in touch with them over the last three to four weeks on several of them ... and the pieces just fit."
From Shapiro:
""He was having a great year. Benny is a guy who's always had streaks where he showed potential," Shapiro said. "I still think Benny's potential is even greater."
Why dump him for a minor league utility outfielder? Don't the Indians already have enough outfielders (in their system)? It just doesn't make sense. I hope it's a true "youth movement" like was seen in the early 90's. However I fear it's just dumping salaries (and another "rebuilding cycle" in about 3-4 years).

They were on a five year plan which ended last year. Now apparently they're on a new "five year plan."

The guy they got was last years minor league player of the year. It's not going to Buffalo or to Akron....he's going to play for the Tribe and at least for the rest of the year he's going to platoon with Blake in right field. He's not just some ordinary schmo.
Look, I'm not saying that this is a great deal for the Indians. I just don't think losing Broussard is going to make a difference either way. It's not like they'll be worse because he's gone.

Shin Soo Choo is listed on the roster as a left fielder. Is he better than Coco Crisp (yea I know he plays center field)? What about Hollandsworth (yea he's in left)? Please say he's better than Jason Michaels!! Better than Brad Snyder? Or John Drennen? Or Trevor Crowe? I hope he is.

He was called a "possible five tool player" and was the Mariners #3 prospect at one time.

That's a positive rating. However it makes you wonder why they were willing to give up on a guy like that for a platoon player. I'm willing to give it a chance. I guess being a Cleveland fan makes you eternally skeptical.

You ever notice when Cleveland makes a trade they get a young guy. Never can't go for a real good player. They could make a big deal.

Why can't the Indians get some pitching? I would much rather have a solid pitching staff than solid hitting.
Here is a question:
Who is the biggest player the Indians, or any Cleveland team, has gotten through trade or free agency? I am not talking about young prospects that we got that turned out to be very good. I am talking about an already established star. It just doesn't seem like Cleveland teams get the really good players.
Robbie Alomar maybe. If I remember correctly, getting Shawn Kemp was pretty big and he was still playing pretty well when he acquired him. Any others?

It's not that the Tribe can't sign the big name guys, it just takes the money to do it. In the 90's we signed guys like Orel Hershiser, Dennis Martinez, Matt Williams, David Justice, Jack McDowell, Ellis Burks, and Robbie Alomar. Not all of those guys worked out, but they were all high profile free agents when they signed.

I thought david segui and will cordero were good players. maybe not players the caliber of pujols. cordero had .299 average in 1999 and segui had a .334 average in 2000. austinsm11, they had howery and millwood but the indians decided to skimp. they got two stiffs and a losing record for there ignorance. it always baffles me when you get rid of a proven guy in the pen and on top of that not signing your best pitcher from a year ago. sabathia is NOT a number 1 starter and it gets me mad when they think he is. he is a good number 2 but not a number 1. you have one of the best staffs in baseball and you don't resign the 2 that helped you accomplish this. ya good baseball investments for this years team. maybe next year we will have a traveling circus team that will entertain us more then this years indians.

I wasn't happy about losing Millwood. I know he was a bigger name, but he was also coming back from injury and everyone said we were taking a big chance with him.
Those were some bigger names Mtown, but most were on the down side of their careers, with maybe Alomar being the exception. They were still very productive in Cleveland, but probably not in their prime any more. I don't see Cleveland ever spending the money to get someone in their prime. Plus Cleveland doesn't have the size of markets like New York, Chicago, LA to attract players.
I never really cared for Cordero, but I did like Segui.
I used to go through and look at trying to put together a team with former players who either played for the Indians or their farm system. I always hated how well Jeff Kent did after he left Cleveland.

True...we had like a $90 million payroll back then. I don't expect that to happen, but I don't believe our market is in the bottom 10 of all major league teams and that is where our payroll is. If the Twins can spend $50 mil then we should be able to also.

The team has some flexibility in payroll (even before making their recent moves). However whether they will do anything with that is another question.

What's this? After taking yet ANOTHER series from the Red Sox, the mighty Tampa Bay Devil Rays are only one game behind the struggling Tribe in the standings. Folks, the way you guys were jumping on the bandwagon in April for the Tribe is comical now. I stated it then and I'll state it now. You have NO IDEA how bad it will get on here if The D-Rays finish ahead of Cleveland. I will be unbearable, I promise you.
