Chandler Hamilton opened its season with games at a college stadium, a high school across the Valley and a high school across the country.

It wasted no time showing how much it appreciated finally having a game at home.

Hamilton scored three first-quarter touchdowns Thursday night to quickly break away from a much-improved Tempe Marcos de Niza team on its way to a 39-14 win.

"Our kids wanted to get back on the winning track, and I think we did that tonight," Hamilton coach Steve Belles said. "We've still got to get better at some things, but I think overall the effort was good."

Running back Tony Sims got the scoring started for Hamilton on a 1-yard run with seven minutes left in the first. He added a 44-yard run with 1:41 left to make it 15-0.

Wide receiver Justin Salum made it 22-0 with 16-yard run on a reverse as the first quarter ended.

Marcos de Niza didn't help its cause early. It fumbled on its second and third possessions of the game, giving Hamilton a short field with which to work.

"I'm not going to say that we were out-manned, but we definitely beat ourselves in the first quarter," Marcos de Niza coach Roy Lopez said. "That's one thing that had been going good for us this year is that we had been able to protect the ball and not make too many mistakes."

Hamilton (3-1) went up 25-0 with a 31-yard field goal by Brent Blaylock with 4:46 left in the third.

Wide receiver Kerry Taylor scored two quick touchdowns in the fourth, a 43-yard reception from backup quarterback Justin Peters with 11:21 left and a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown with 9:27 left, giving Hamilton its final points.

Marcos de Niza (3-1) got on the board with a 7-yard pass from quarterback David Viel to Ben Matuz with three minutes left and made it 39-14 with a 73-yard pass from Mario Moreno to Matuz off a lateral from Viel with 1:13 left.
