Dave Irwin: Junior QB in 1998 (started season on reserve team). Senior QB starter in 1999.
Zwick in 2000

If you mean who would have been the propable qb had jz never come here.It was Montale Watkins,I think. He was moved to slot receiver, and, for trivia's sake, was flagged for holding during the infamous jz td run at the end of the Marion playoff game.

In '98 Dave Irwin took over as a Jr. around week 7. That was Shep's first year when we went 4-6. Irwin took over for Tom Fichter, I believe. Irwin won both games in week 8 & 9. Against a good McK team, he had a very good game. And of course had a 10-1 record his Sr year.

Didnt they flag someone who wasnt even on the field?

Someone named Gavin?

...my memory of that is hazy.

I believe the Marquis Williams was the QB that you are thinking of....not Montale Watkins. I do not believe that Montale was the one flagged on the run either. If my remember serves me correctly, Gavin Pedrotty was flagged on the play, he was on the sidelines during the play but somehow he was flagged for it.

If you can somehow find the play on video,it appears that #9 grabs the back of a Marion players jersey as the defender is closing in on Zwick.I cant say for sure if that was the infraction.I did'nt think the referees in HS revealed who committed the penalty like they do in college and pros?
Whoever #9 was,is the player who would have propably been Qb that year if not for JZ.Shepas moved him to a receiver position. It would be ironic if he was the one flagged on that play.

Irwin actually took over for Steve Eyerman, who took over for Tom Fichter earlier in the season. Irwin made a good showing against Moeller in week 8,but the Tigers lost 35-19. The next week,Massillon and Irwin looked strong in defeating Akron St.V. Against McK,the Tigers led 20-19 going into the fourth quarter before Mike Doss broke off a long touchdown run,(in which game films show McK was holding),and the roof caved in.

I am not sure who was called for the hold. I do know the refs told the Coaches that it was on number 4. They do not announce for the whole stadium like they do in college or the pros however they always tell the coaches who the penalty is on.

Oh your right. I forgot about Eyerman, didn't he come over from PA with Shepas? In '99 he got moved to defense, LB I believe.

Yep,he came with Shep.(Hey,that rhymes!) And yeah, the next year he put some weight on,moved to LB,and played MUCH better than the previous year at QB. Remember the interception return for a T.D.against McK? Man,was that sweet!

Marquis Williams caught probably the most amazing pass I saw Zwick (or any HS QB) ever threw. He threaded the needle between two Ignatius defenders and Williams waltzed into the end zone for a Tiger TD in 2000.

I recall as well that they told Shep the number of the player and it was a player who was not even in on the play.

I had an up close view of the play as well as the video in hand. The flag was on Williams 40 yards from Zwick as he was near the end-zone. The call was "questionable" at best and had absolutely no impact on assisting Zwicks great run.

.....and I would imagine someone that close to the play would probably let the ref know that the call was "questionable."

I'd love to see a video of that play. I saw it live, but never saw it on film. One of the best runs I've ever seen!

That was the whole problem, lol. It was too good for a QB, so they just thought there had to be a penalty on the play.

I'm not sure what video you are referring to, but NOBODY is closing in on Zwick...It was a hatchet job from the start and the officials should be ashamed of themselves.

Unfortunately,It might have been the only call the officials got right the whole night.
If you have any tape of the game, theres no denying it.Watch for the back of a Marion players jersey getting grabbed as jz is on the run.
The flag that bothered me was when Massillon was near the scoreboard goal line and a hold was called literally AS SOON as the tigers snapped the ball.C'mon.
I wish past games somehow were preserved on line. You can order them, but they want so damn much for them.

I was more appalled by the NO CALL, on the screen pass they ran for the TD before this happened !!

From what I saw on the play you are referring too was the ref had the flag in his hand BEFORE the ball was even snapped. And, dont forget about the fumble that rolled out of the end-zone. It was supposed to be Massillon ball.
