A rumor I heard says that the Lincoln Theater is going to become a "classic movie" theater.
Beginning the weekend after ArtSyrcus, June 28, the Lincoln will stop showing "new releases" and become a destination theatre showing classic movies only. There will be a different theme each month including Celebrate America, Blockbuster, Horror, War, Holiday, etc, with a different movie each weekend.

:thumbsup:Sounds pretty cool. My dad will love going to see classic war movies on the big screen in downtown.... I think it'll be one of the only theater's doing this. This could really put Massillon on the map and we may actually get people coming to Massillon on the weekends instead of leaving town.

Anybody else heard anything about this?

Yes, actually, I have.
At that art show thing downtown last weekend some guy with a beard wearing a retro hat was telling me about it.

Sounds like more fun for us!

We do a feature on Friday's called 'Live at the Lincoln'. When they join me on tomorrows show, I'll ask them.

This sounds like the end is near for the Lincoln Theatre. They will lose my business if they make this change. They will lose what business they have and will be forced to close. Hopfully this is just rumor.

done right, this could be a fun thing for all...

there are certain movies that were just made for the big screen...the effect just isn't the same on the boob tube...

like the Godfather...Gone with the Wind...Wizard of Oz...just a few that came to mind in a second...

newer ones would be the Narnia ones...

don't know why some would think this is a bad idea...i actually thought about doing something similar at home...

one night doing dog movies...k-9 with jim belushi...turner and hooch...beethovan...another night...the back to the future trilogy...star wars...the original trilogy...chevy chase movies...3 amigos...national lampoon's vacation...spies like us...

do saturday cartoons during the wintertime...winnie the pooh, huckleberry hound...pixie and dixie...old disney ones like shaggy dog and others...

people are already paying big bucks for hbo and other extra channels...for movies like these...why not save that money for movies that one would truly want to see...that gets you out of the house...make it a family night...

to whom it may concern...make the popcorn and drinks reasonably priced...5 bucks for popcorn is outrageous...make things economical for the american family...

two reasons i rarely go to movies these days...is the price of tickets / treats...and there really aren't that many good movies being made that are worth wasting an evening on...shoot, i find it hard to find anything less than 5 years old worth watching on tv...have found myself watching "walker texas, ranger" and "murder she wrote"...lately...

again, done right, this could be a fun idea...

One idea could be to show a current release on Friday and Sunday and a classic film on Saturday.

Nice.
C'mon man! there has got to be some shelved movies you'd love to see again on the big screen. Don't tell me you dont have a favorite movie! I think this is a really smart move and they'll actually get more business.
Another part of the rumor was that they'll create a club you can join to vote on what movies will be shown.... a democratic theater! How Patriotic! I'm sure we'd all love to dictate what movies the theater should play.Well if its cheap to join the club, they'll make all the money they need. I know I'll be into it.
They are also talking about having at least one live performance weekend a month. Imagine Shakespeare, dance perfomances, musical concerts!

What the heck's going on around here? Culture in Massillon? Who do these artsy types think they are!
::sniff-sniff:: what's that smell? I think its change. Some love it, some hate it, but its inevitable. I think this is for the better!

I'd put in an 80's theme, Brat Pack, or a John Hughes type of movie month.

Breakfast Club
Pretty in Pink
Sixteen Candles
Ferris Buehller's Day Off
Weird Science
St. Elmo's Fire
Dirty Dancing
Footloose

Etc...

I think they should play Pink Floyd "The Wall" twice a month at Midnight!!!

You must be a HUGE Anthony Michael Hall fan, Stern............

I like most of these movies you mentioned, with the obvious exception of Dirty Dancing and Footloose......

How about these 80's movies on the Big Screen

Stripes
Caddyshack
The Blues Brothers
Beverly Hills Cop (only the first one)
Predator, IMO would be FREAKING AWESOME on the big screen!!!
Indiana Jones.... (all of them)
Rocky.... (all of them)

DIE HARD!!!!!!!

I could go on........

I think it's a good idea. The Lincoln can't compete with the modern multi-plex theatres going up now. I would also like to see a Saturday matinee for kids every week. Remember the days of getting a free movie when you took in a canned good for charity at the old Weslin Theatre? Fun times that kids should get a chance to do again.

I had Jim Thomas from the Lincoln on my show this morning, although he didn't want to go public on all of there plans, he did say that there will be changes at the Lincoln as far as movie programming goes. He added that
there will be no way that the Lincoln would be able to keep up with the digital feeds of first run movies; which is the mode that theaters will be receiving movies in the near future.

Actually the Ananda Center did the Rocky Horror Picture Show. 3 Showings around halloween, including a midnight showing!:rockin:

I was their in drag and make-up, shouting out all the responses! They even sold a small "goodies-bag" with all the props you need for a fully interactive experience.
If you've been to a showing of the RHPC you know what I'm talking about ;)

This a a GREAT idea. As I was reading this I was thinking about the kids movies (like TigerCoach mentioned) that we used to go to on Saturdays. That theater was packed and we had so much fun.

Also liked the idea about concerts. We went to Marion a few weeks back to see Phil Dirt and the Dozers. They had a concert at the Marion Palace Theatre, a renovated old theater that looks something like the Canton Palace. It was a wonderful concert and they had a big crowd.

And to see Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music or even something like the old version of King Kong (when they do that close-up on his face at the beginning and the Empire State Building scene, on the big screen would be really awesome) -- old movies like these would make for some fantastic entertainment.

My wife and I went to the Lincoln last night to see "Vantage Point" and I asked the lady in the ticket booth if it was true about the theatre becoming a classic films theatre. She acknowledged the rumor and added that she didn't think it was a good idea. Something to do with they would lose their projectionist because the old films are on D.V.D. and if the classic format didn't go and they wanted to go back to current releases they wouldn't have a projectionist. They belong to a union and have to be paid,so the current guy would get a job elsewhere.
