The other day at a building my friends dad owns, where the old yankee pedler used to be, had a art showing of some of this dudes art. when the three of us got there after a day of fishing at lock 4, the site shocked us. nothing but hippies and stuff. here we are, three good-ol-boys dressed in camo and fish blood, and we have to walk through a group of goth, artist types. and then, wen i got inside, the art was unbelievable. first off, most of it was pictures of Jesus with a pair of scissors through him! yes, you herd me correctly. also alot of his "art" was just pieces of wood with paint splatter, and were going for like 50 bucks! but the worst of all was, the head hippy had 6 pictures of the virgin mary arranged in the shap of an upside down cross! i tell what what, it my friends dad didnt own the store, and was renting it out to him, i would of made little mr MOLOTOV. so, after losing brain cells for 6 minutes, we got in my truck, blasted alabama and drove away:drinkem:

plus the music, my god the music. i was about to call animal control because i thought a cat was being tortured in the next room, but it turned out is was just some hippy singing on a bongo drum

Hello?! Anyone paying attention? You know those art shows I'm always yapping about on here. THAT WAS IT!
I'm actually the guy in the hat in that picture.
I'm sorry if the art work offended you or you didn’t understand it, but that’s part of the reason we are doing these shows. The artist was there and was more than willing to offer an explanation for his choice in subject matter.
We are thrilled to get any reaction to art, positive or negative...so I will pass along to the artist that you said "the art was unbelievable" and I'm sure he'll be happy to hear it.

The artist was Scot Phillips
You can read about him in this thread...

http://massillonproud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8531

Here’s his art website if you’re interested...
http://www.theblakhorse.com

Any way, I'm happy that you came, and I can't thank your friend's dad enough for allowing us to use the space. He actually offered me some other properties he owned to use for future art shows.

The attendance was over 200 people, the free food(local Massillon vendor) and live music(band from Massillon) were well received. Hopefully one of those "hippies" was a potential renter for your friend's dad.

Thanks again for attending the show... our next show is a female artist named Angela Battista who does lots of girlie paintings of mermaids and things. Lee's Korean BBQ & Sushi is donating the free food. There will also be live music.
It'll be May 31st downtown behind State Farm Agent Rhonda McMahan's office. Hope to see you all there!

Oh and by the way... that "hippie" Artists made over $500 in sales that night.

Oh and Lobbs... the store was called "Ye Olde Peddler", not Yankee Peddler.

Dude, seriously, i think its awesome you attended! I think its great that you have an opinion, but you have to remember, we arent going to your truck and cracking on how you listen to Alabama :) That show did a lot of good, and whats so awesome about art is, its all so different. Hippies arent bad people, actually, there was only about 2 real hippies there :) The rest were a mix of the massillon canton society! Young, Old, Tattooed, and football lovers!
Once again thanks for the opinion!

JIC there is any misunderstanding, that was a shot at Mr. Lobbs' comments.
Many people are naturally afraid of that which they don't understand.
They often react with hatefullness.
Hitler loved people like that!
(And he was an artist.)

This whole thing is like some kind of great narrow look at a giant microcosm.

First of all, I was there for most of the evening.
I didn't see too many football fan types, but I didn't see too many gothy people either.
It looked to me like a crowd of artists and people that appreciate art.

There is a goth club a few doors down, and a few of them may have wandered over out of curiosity.

And some goth types are capable of understanding art, believe it or not.

Lobbs, you should have smeared some trout blood on a piece of driftwood and stuck a fishhook in it.
In fact, it sounds like you were participating in a little performance art yourselves! You came and made a statement. Good for you.

BTW, the band didn't suck, but they could have played more music and spent less time talking. It seemed sometimes like they were trying to make the show about them, rather than about the artist.

Here is a picture of the scary crowd that was outside Saturday night.

Please point out who in this picture is goth, or scares you in any other way.

Maybe you should stay down in Bohunkville.
Massillon just might be out-growing you.

I'll tell you what....I would much rather spend my evening socializing at an exhibit opening or art show with a bunch of hippies (people open to new ideas, tolerance, and open mindness), than a bunch of hill-jack rednecks (people who are closed minded, narrow, and inherently bigoted towards others not like them). Remember, there's only so much camo and dixie flag ball caps to go around, so there will be many more non-redneck hillbilies by default.....I know Lobbs is young, but everytime he opens his mouth stupid S**T spills out. This is consistent when he trying to be funning as well as serious. Time to grow up and quite acting like a fool. You give Massillon's youngsters a bad name...

To DragonTigerNemesis,

I understand that the art shows are designed to showcase different local artists and food vendors, as well as the empty spaces. Musicians are artists too. Try having an open mind. We need some new and exciting things in Massillon.

I was at the art show most of the evening, and spoke to several teachers, a booster club member, some football fans, and even a football coach of all things! Who'd a thought people like that would ever attend? Whether you like the art or not, you have to admit the event itself is very creative.

At least this Scot Phillips kid is out hustling to make a few bucks -- and make something out of himself, which is more than I can say for some people.

It's nice that he opened his art exhibit in Massillon. Massillon is a great town -- we need more niche entertainment like this in in our downtown so folks have an alternative to traipsing off to Belden Village (or Westfield or whatever it's called nowadays) for mall-rat entertainment.

In Columbus, the first Saturday of every month is called the "Gallery Hop," where all the art galleries in the Short North area of downtown are open in the evening to the public. These galleries -- and the local restaurants -- are packed! It would be great if Massillon could start something similar. Maybe get several young, struggling artists to display their work each month, and we can go downtown to look and buy.

Maybe I should recommend this idea to the Mayor?

The Voice
04-29-2008, 09:13 PM
unfortunately; Massillon is not as advanced as we would wish it to be when it comes to culture. Gallery hopping just doesn't work for pick up trucks with gun racks on the back..Sorry..

Well, according to one of our posters, the art event attracted over 200 people -- with the only advertising being a few local news articles. Maybe there is a market for this type of event -- not just for Massillonians but folks from surrounding areas. Just a thought...

Kenny M.
04-29-2008, 10:10 PM
Plus, from what some of the folks that attended said, it sounds like the event attracted an eclectic group of people: young, old, mainstream, not-so-mainstream.

I give Massillonians some credit. I think if the event were to be upgraded somewhat, it could provide a nice (family-oriented) Saturday night escape in the spring, summer and fall. I'm sure the area restaurants and businesses would be thrilled with the extra business!

macguy
04-30-2008, 12:33 AM
I don't know if it needs upgraded at all. I have been at both events so far and have been with my wife and 2 little kids. The kids have had fun dancing to the music and we get to do something as a family. I will try to do everything I can to help them appreciate someone's creativity.

You are right Kenny, there is a market for this.

I am looking forward to this event each month and it is about time. This region has been so oblivious to the artistic talent here that a lot of them have historically moved to other cities where they can be appreciated and allowed to grow creatively. Finally, Mass/Canton are being more friendly to the arts and it is long overdue! They are starving for creative art and are now getting a menu to pick from instead of the same old platter everyday.

The art displaced event was a great success and I think the posters here prove it. Especially Lobbs. If we're getting under a guy like that's skin then that for me is a small part on why I enjoy it so much. I only wish I felt better that evening to spend more time down there with all the cool interesting people.

Also believe it or not, many musicians in this area won't work for next to free. Don't give the Acid Pros too much trouble. Like another poster said they are artists as well.

I can't wait for more of these events and completely agree it's high time Massillon had something like this. I support thebili in his creative explorations and ideas on bringing the arts back into Massillon. You kick ass man. Grats to another successful evening

thebili
04-30-2008, 08:58 AM
Hey everybody! Thanks for the support! We have another event like this coming up May 31st, so stay in-the-know.
Like it has been stated here, artists are often over looked and move away. But some of us have resolved to be the change we want to see happen. This project is good for the community, the artists, the food vendors and musicians. Its a fun, safe, avant garde event appealing to all demographics for a night out.
So not only is it a cultural event, its a "see-and-be-seen" event where all the "cool-kids" are hanging out!
Sure some of Scot Phillips work is controversial, but each of these events will feature a completely different artists with completely different work. So our next event (really I should be calling these parties, that's what they are) will feature Angela Battista, a Massillonian who paints beautiful, colorful mermaids, portraits, scenery and girlie things (she also makes purses and girlie shirts). She is a complete contrast to Scot Phillips.

Does this sound more like you Lobbs?

So we are trying to hit all tastes and styles. So if you didn't like this last one, try the next one, I'm sure there is at least one show you'll enjoy. 1 a month until February 2009.

Oh and to Lobbs: I heard you enjoyed several of the free pulled pork sandwiches from the Hogfather BBQ that was available at the Scot Phillips show. I ate the same stuff and my stomach didn’t hurt

BTW we'll have free sushi from Lee's Korean at Angela Battista's show on the 31st. See you all there! It'll be a great time!

The art hop is a great idea, Canton has EXPLODED with arts these past 5 years, and now every first friday of the month they do the hop :) all the businesses benefit from the art shops making a big deal about being open... there are hundreds if not thousands that come through on that night, especially in the summer. If you propose this idea to the mayor, use canton as your reference!

Its encouraging isnt it? But we cant do it alone, we need everyones help. You can ask how at the Massillon Museum, or by contacting the Ananda Center. You know some ladies that want to take Yoga or Belly Dance? Do so at the Ananda center!!
You want to Help with these art shows, know musicians, artists, food venders, contact thebili (bili@bili.org)

You want to open an art gallery? Also contact thebili, we know several open spaces that are cheap or free and you may get a grant through arts in stark that will pay the bills for awhile.

this can be done in massillon. Football is great, but options are better!

this can be done in massillon. Football is great, but options are better!

Much if not most of football is art.
And here in Massillon, "The Greatest Show in High School Football" is a huge piece of performance art that hundreds if not thousands of people participate in, including the fans.
(I'm aware that you know all this, I'm speaking to the rest.)

The scoreboard activity, the people who chose the fireworks, the band and cheerleader choreographers...heck, even the people working on the helmet designs are all a part of the giant art show.

Someday, maybe more of the fans will realize that Massillon Football is a huge art project, and in fact that it is that very aspect of it that appeals to so many people and draws them back every year.

They love Obie. Obie is art.
They love the McKinley parade. It's all art.
They love decorating their homes, cars and themselves. It's all art.

In fact, for ten to fifteen weeks every year, for a town its size, Massillon probably puts on the biggest real, abstract and performance art show in the world!

IF you read closely, then you already know i never said football wasnt art. I just said options are better. Just as i would get tired of always seeing Warhol, or watercolor, or football... but the combination keeps it interesting!

I know. I said I was merely bouncing off your comment to spring into a diatribe to everyone else.

My point is that Massillon is a community of artists, maybe more so than hardly any other community around.

I guess I was just trying to point it out to them.

A long time ago, when I was hopeless on the subject of art, an artist friend from Youngstown made it his personal project to help me understand what is art in our everyday lives.
I'm convinced that its important for people to understand that they are surrounded by art, and almost everyone is some kind of artist.

Art is a huge part of almost everyone of us.
But, how many people are aware of it, or think about it?

Yes, but only when expanded to encompass the overall image that the redneck wishes to portray.

It includes his choice of clothing (especially the ball cap and how low over the brow he wears it), sunscreen chosen for the rear window of the truck, his choice of mudflaps (i.e. Playboy Bunnie or Yosemite Sam), the color and design of his cooler---well I hope you get point, as I'm getting tired of thinking so hard.

Here we go again---

You hate/dislike me because you don't understand me.

Human Nature Translation: You fear me.

That's OK, I can live with it.
You would never recognize me without my face paint anyway.

Not to attempt to direct an artist---but if you paint one lifting up a sewer lid and looking around, I just might have a buyer.
(Me for my brother-in-law. Extra $ if you make it his street with his house in the background.)

Here Mr. thebili:

Perhaps this will further your inspiration.
This is picture that I created a couple of years ago for the front of his Halloween party invitation.
The building is an actual picture of his house taken in B&W in 1910.
The rest is my fabrication from stuff "borrowed" on the internet, along with a little Photoshop work.

Hey Man! I'll all about doing commissioned peices. I'd even give you "friend prices" if your seriosuly interested. Are you talking about a painting that references "IT"?
Send me a pic of the street and house and I'll give you a quote!

I can do portraits, but only from photographic refrence.

In other words, you have to give me a picture to work from.

I enjoy doing more contemorary peices in bright colors.
I call them Pop Portraits.... "Andy Warhol" Style pictures hand painted from your photograph.
I have done several for friends and family. I'll post them here as soon as I
find pics of them.
Like any other service, I would be willing to give you and estimate first.

As for football, Paul Brown was the original creative genius! He was a visionary that made our most famous piece of art, The Massillon Tigers, what they are today. Also, let's not forget that other creative genius, George Red Bird, who was the driving force behind the Massillon Tiger Swing Band. This town has produced more than a few brilliant trailblazers.

Good to know! Robb is affectionatly known, amoung the art crowd, as "big Daddy Artbucks" since he's head of the organization who hands out money to art organizations like The Ananda Center. We love him!
