Steubenville splits a twinbill at Vaccaro Field
By STEPHANIE ELVERD, Sports writer
STEUBENVILLE – Ideally, Big Red baseball coach Fred Heatherington would have liked to see his team win two games Saturday at Vaccaro Field, but after his young team lost a 6-5 squeaker to Medina in the first game of the day, Heatherington was pleased with team’s resilience and its 12-6 victory over Massillon in the nightcap.
“We’re happy with the split,” he said. “Two bad innings cost us the first game and even though we were down 6-0 we battled back and scored five runs in the sixth inning and gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game. Unfortunately, we didn’t.
“In the second game we bounced back. We got down 3-0 real quick, but we didn’t hang our heads about it. We came right back and put five on the board.”
In the loss, Medina scored four runs in the top of the third to break open what had been a scoreless game. The visitors went on to post another pair of runs in the fifth.
Big Red responded with the big sixth inning, but in the end came up a run short.
In the win, Steubenville found itself down 3-0 in the top of the first. The Red had retired the first two Massillon batters, but a walk and an error put two Tigers on. Dan Huhn drove in both runners and himself with a home run.
Big Red’s pitcher, T.J. DeChristopher, who went all the way to record the win with five strikeoust and three walks, fanned the Tigers’ starting and losing pitcher John Gianelli to prevent further damage.
Anthony Pierro kick started Big Red’s offense in the bottom of the opening inning with a double. Pierro would score and make another appearance at the plate as his team ran through its lineup. Jeremy Banks, Jordan Banks, Jordan McIntyre and Mitch Bainbridge also scored in the inning.
McIntyre singled, while Bainbridge and David Anderson each came up with an RBI single and Westlake drove in a run with a double.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of the second with two runs, but the Red retook the lead in the bottom. In that inning, Jeremy Banks and Anthony Gossett scored with Jordan Banks and McIntyre coming up with RBI singles.
Steubenville would tack on another three runs in the fourth and post two in the fifth. Angelo Iachini and Jeremy Banks led off the fourth frame with a single and double respectively.
Anthony Gossett doubled to score both runners. Gossett later scored when Jordan Banks flew out to center field. In the fifth, Caleb Westlake singled. Iachini drove him in with another base hit. Gossett did the same for Iachini.
Steubenville finished with 15 hits on the day.
“We were aggressive at the plate today. Everybody hit the ball,” Heatherington said.”We put the ball in play and when we did we hit it hard.”
DeChristopher gave up 10 hits, but would allow just one other run. Massillon scratched out its final score in the fifth.
“I thought T.J. battled and hung in there and got his pitches working,” Heatherington said.
In the loss, to Medina, Phil Gilmore went the distance. He fanned two and gave up one walk. Gossett, Iachini, Pierro, Bainbridge and Anderson scored the Red’s runs. Iachini and Pierro both doubled, with Jeremy Banks and Wetslake supplying two RBIs apiece.
In between Big Red’s games, Medina and Massillon faced off with Medina winning 10-9 decision in eight innings.
