View Full Version : Hopkins: "I will NEVER lose to a white boy!"

As if I hadn't been hounded enough by CarlE, Seeker, and Lakewood on my opinion (rather thought) that Detroit residents should stand behind embattled mayor Kwame Kilpatrick because he is black, this one will take the cake:
Light heavyweight boxing champion Bernard Hopkins said to challenger Joe Calzaghe in a press conference that "I will NEVER lose to a white boy" while getting prepared for the second defense of his championship against the undefeated super middleweight champion.
The two are slated to fight Saturday night at 9:45 p.m. on HBO and it will be Calzaghe's first fight in the United States.
Hopkins had better be willing to hold his own in the ring against a fighter who has demolished the last two knockout artists to unify the 168 lb. division. But to even involve race in a fight is just crossing the line.
Will Hopkins hand Calzaghe his first setback? Or will my dad use his traditional quote "what have we got here" (when a new champion is crowned)?
My take: Hopkins keeps the belt. But leave the race out of it.

This is one time I hope Hopkins is right. It's about time that coward Limey came out of England to fight. I hope Hopkins knocks him on his a$$ about ten times before they stop it.

I saw the Hopkins interview and its funny to me about the comment. Both fighters are talking trash--- Calzache stated tht he knew Hopkins was just hyping the fight to gain ratings. Calzache destroyed Jeff Lacey but BH is a defensive counter pouncher with a deadly overhand right! Could get interesting but I am routing for the AMERICAN for sure!!!

Lacy was at a real bad point in his life at that time, Monte. They did a great article in the St. Pete Times a year later about all that Lacy was going through. Bad management for sure. Anyway, I hope Hopkins rips this Limey's head off.

CarlE,
I'll be watching the bout with my dad. Look for Hopkins to have an advantage with his skills. Calzaghe hasn't faced anything like this, excluding knockout artists Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler whom he dispatched in decisions.
Take Hopkins in this fight, far and away, coast to coast, wire-to-wire.
monte81,
I have an ancedote to tell you. I remember back in 1997, Oscar De La Hoya made a comment that black fighters had no heart in the form that he hits them with a bodyshot and "they give it all up because they have no heart" and no African-American "can take my punch."
Well, you know what Bernard Hopkins did to De La Hoya and the bodyshot that deflated him like a balloon in their 2004 middleweight title bout.........

Keno,
The black boy.
As far as Oscar goes: I was at the Mirage about 10 years ago, and a blackjack table was reserved for only 1 player. That player was none other than Oscar De La Hoya !! I was amazed at how tiny he was. I told the Mrs. that I should go over and knock him off the stool, just to say I did it !!
Also rode an elevator one time in '94 at the MGM Grand with Roy Jones Jr, the week that he fought James Toney in Las Vegas. He was a BIG man !!
Also ran into Iron Mike Tyson once at the Versace store in Caesar's Palace Forum Shops. He was shopping in the store with his bodyguards, and it was closed to the public. We shot out an employee side entrance, and found Mike's convertible green Bentley, and waited for him to come out. He talked and took pictures with us. He is a SHORT man . The Mrs. was as tall as him !!
That's about all my boxing stories !

Oh boy, I can see it now......
"Tension is mounting between blacks and whites as the title fight between Bernard Hopkins and DAWGH8R nears closer. More details to be reported......"
Ok, I'm bullsplitting (LOL). DAWGH8R, you have an outstanding boxing resume to be seeing all those world champions! I'm impressed!!
I'd have loved to meet those world champions!!!!!!
P.S. Would you really try to fight Hopkins?

C'mon, your talking about a guy who used to get his ass kicked by his older sister!:poke: But, I think he may have beaten up "Skeeter" Waldrop once.

TigerCoach,
DAWGH8R got his butt kicked by his older sister? Gee whiz! I don't think he'd like to hear that of all things...

Calzaghe took it to Hopkins last night. He beat him on every punch and certainly showed he's the real deal. I can't believe one of the judges actually scored it as a Hopkins victory. Must have been at one of the blackjack tables while the fight was going on. Youth definitely won this fight and I have to take back all my negativism on Joe Calzaghe. He is a great fighter who kicked Bernard Hopkins' ASS last night. Fun fight to watch.

CarlE,
Hopkins was cross at this decision. But Calzaghe started to implement his fight plan from the fourth round on, limiting Hopkins to just either one or two punches.
Also landing more on Hopkins (than what any other fighter has done) helped too. Throwing one or two punches against a fighter of Calzaghe's caliber won't defeat the Welshman.
Ladies and gentlemen: Bernard Hopkins lost to a WHITE boy. And that white boy he spoke of is now the king of light heavyweights.

I agree that's probably true, but can you imagine the uproar if Calzaghe would have said he would never lose to a black boy?
He would have been crucified by multiple organizations.......
I was in Hopkins corner until I saw that clip.............

proud to be,
I have never been the one to invoke race into anything. You do bring up the point of a firestorm that would had been caused if Calzaghe said that he "would NEVER lose to a black boy."
This setback makes Hopkins look bad. You don't want to say something and then have it come back to bite you in the rear end.
Credit Calzaghe for keeping his cool under intense fire. He showed me something that I had wanted to see from in a high pressure fight (not including fights against Lacy and Kessler).

All the BS aside, I appreciate Calzaghe's toughness, but am not convinced that he is good enough to beat a TOP flight LHW, SMW, or MW in the PRIME of his career. Bernard Hopkins is 43 years old, and not what he used to be. Calzaghe is definitely unconventional, and tough, but at times looked to be "slapping" with his punches instead of delivering them with his shoulders behind them. Not to take anything away from him, but had he made the trip across the "Pond" when Hopkins, Roy Jones, etc.... were 5 years younger, he gets his butt whooped IMO. He knew what he was doing staying away until now.

proud to be,
Five years ago, Hopkins and Calzaghe would not have fought. Hopkins at 38 was on his way to a mega fight with Oscar De La Hoya for the undisputed middleweight crown and Roy Jones at 34 was coming off a controversial win over Antonio Tarver (the WBC ordered a quick rematch which Jones obliged to, recall the controversial decision).
It wouldn't had made a difference because in the super middleweight division, Markus Beyer (Germany) was retired by Mikkel Kessler (WBA 168 lb. belt)...Jeff Lacy captured the IBF belt by blowing out Syd Vanderpool. Here is what the picture looked like five years ago:
WBO--Calzaghe
IBF--Lacy
WBA--Kessler
WBC--VACANT
Calzaghe took out Lacy and Kessler in decisions. It wouldn't have made a difference five years ago largely because Hopkins and Jones were at their peaks in 2003.

Hmmm...I met Jr. in Indianapolis in 2000 and had my picture taken with him. I was surprised at how small he was...aside from his arms.

SternRulz,
I'd give my heart and soul to meet Jones and his entourage at their peak! There wasn't anyone who could touch Jones at his peak! While I'm posting this to you, I am watching Jones pummeling Vinny Pazienza and blowing out Montell Griffin in a round!
P.S. That was prior to his fight against Richard Hall...an 11th round TKO win.
