Let's see if I can do this with the rivalry in mind...

Welcome Jason Hall to Massillon Washington.

Glad to have you!
(He can't do better against my Bulldogs than that guy who was there before him.)

I thought thats what the #35 was. Just don't let anyone call the football championships before 1970 as "mythical"! playoffs or no playoffs. Stark county has always had the best football and back in that erra whoever won the Massillon vs. McK. game probably was the best in the state.

DaveDawg,

I always wondered how the state champions of 1895 and 1896 were determined. I know there was "Popular Acclaim" in the 1900s, but didn't know there was anything at the "state" level in the 1800s. I know Massillon played only a couple games a year back then (beginning in 1894)- how many did Canton Central play?

DaveDawg

Canton (Central)
1895 (5-0-0) no coach on record

W.....20 - 00.......Picked Team
W.....06 - 00.......Massillon Washington
W.....44 - 00.......Akron High School
W.....12 - 00.......Alliance
W.....16 - 00.......at Alliance

The games vs Alliance were played on the same day, Alliance began the day taking the train to Canton,
played the game, then both teams took the train to Alliance, played another game,
and the Canton squad returned by train after winning both.
The only time In Bulldoog history to have two games played in one day.

1896 (5-0-3) William Day and Otto Glessen

.T.....04 - 04.......at Akron Gymnasium
.T.....00 - 00.......Mt. Union College
W.....50 - 00.......at Salem
W.....06 - 04.......at Mt. Union College
.T.....00 - 00.......at Massillon Athletic Club
W.....30 - 00.......at Millersburg
W.....30 - 00.......Akron Buchtel College
W.....18 - 00.......Massillon Athletic Club

Tiger Vic-
To call these two Canton teams state champions was determined by McKinley historian Charlie Bowersox and a group he met with (other members of a high school historians group). They believed that with only 4 or 5 high schools playing football in these two years, that with Canton finishing undefeated would qualify as naming those teams "state champions", so they did. It stuck many years ago.

From what I heard, McKinley and Ross had quite the swimming rivalry back in the day.

I apologize polluting this thread by using swimming.

Thank you, DaveDawg. Do you know who was named for other years by the committee?

Akron Buchtel College is now the University of Akron. I wonder if Heisman was still coach there when they played Canton Central?

Heisman coached at Akron in 1893 and went 5-2.

He coached Akron in the first game of 1894 (a win), then jumped back to Oberlin, where he had begun his coaching career in 1892.

I do not have that list, or do I know where it exists today.
