View Full Version : Mck vs Massillon
Just a thought!
Since this is the playoff era, I was thinking maybe the Massillon vs Mckinley game should not be the last game of the season. It seems to me that its hard to play this classic and then go into the playoffs more than likely playing Mck again. Just wanted to get a discussion going?

Big Time,
When it's Canton McKinley-Massillon...anything can happen. I enjoy the week 10 game also!
Of course, Massillon has a little greater incentive going into this year's contest. Two years ago, the seniors on the Tigers this year were sophomores when the Bulldogs stomped out the Tigers 2004 season 20-7. The win was marred when Bulldogs players jumped on the 'M' logo at midfield following that game.
The Tigers are determined not to let that happen again. This decade against Canton McKinley, Massillon is 2-1 against the Bulldogs at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.

I think it should stay week ten the kids have to be strong and learn to deal with possibly losing that game heading into the playoffs. if we play them early and lose we can say well hay there season went down the drain after that loss. I for one hate excuses either your strong enough to deal with a loss and move forward or just fold tent losing in the first round of the playoffs. the good teams move forward [like this years tigers] and get deep into the playoffs. like saying they were drunk or something after a loss and learn the boys to be men. creating excuses only hurts them when they head to college and learn not every thing will go your way. I would think we are making men out of our players and teaching them to never give up. losing in the first round after getting beat by mckinley would only mean they have given up. I like coach Valvano's motto [don't ever give up].

DaveDawg,
You know that Canton McKinley stomped out Massillon's 2004 season 20-7. How else do I explain Canton McKinley players stomping on the 'M' logo at midfield when the clock ticked down to 0:00?
I'm not trying to force anything but if you saw what happened, my stance is validated to a degree.

Fats....that isn't EVEN funny!
I would never want it to change. Just wanted to liven up some people. I think playing your rival before the playoffs is an advantage, it gets you prepared for the playoff run. You have a playoff game atmosphere before the playoffs start. I just think it is better when we do not play Mck as the first game in the playoffs. It is always hard to beat a team twice in a row.
Maybe somebody has the stats on that. What is the record when Mck and Massillon play back to back.

It has only happened once:
1980
Lost Game 10 Mass 7 Mck 16
Won Playoff Game Week 1 Mass 14 McK 6
1994
Won Game 10 Mass 42 McK 41
Lost Playoff Game Week 2 Mass 20 Mck 27
2001
Won Game 10 Mass 29 Mck 26
Won Playoff Game Week 2 Mass 35 Mck 19
2005
Lost Game 10 Mass 8 Mck 38
Won Playoff game Week 3 Mass 21 Mck 3

Al,
I want to make a reference to the last two Canton McKinley-Massillon games played. It was a case of both teams not getting off like they wanted to. Massillon lost 38-8 because they didn't get off like they wanted to as they had done all season, same as Canton McKinley...the Bulldogs didn't get off like they wanted to in a 21-3 loss to the Tigers.
The 2001 playoff game was more of the Tigers converting Bulldogs turnovers into points. If Canton McKinley does not turn the ball over four times (which were converted into 28 points), Massillon does not have a commanding 35-7 lead after three quarters and the game is deadlocked going into the fourth quarter at 7-7.
In those two games combined, the Bulldogs turned the ball over NINE times and you won't win games turning the ball over. On the other hand, Massillon turned the ball over only three times (the first game).

Dude, we beat you so bad in '01, are you going to tell me that we wouldn't have scored if not for those turnovers?

MTown,
I hope you know that in 2001, Massillon scored 93 points in their three regional wins, 72 points off turnovers (24 against Marion Harding, 28 against Canton McKinley, and 20 against North Canton Hoover).
Turnovers create opportunities for points...and Massillon took advantage of them as anyone would expect.
What can I say?

DaveDawg,
May I ask you one question...no make that two:
1) Are you telling me that I should say a lot more about Canton McKinley and less than Massillon?

How about, due to the BCS (and eventual playoff system for Div. I colleges), OSU-Michigan, Oklahoma-Nebraska, USC-UCLA, etc. would be moved to the season openers to get them out of the way so the teams can concentrate on the much more important playoffs.

i would hate to see mckinley-massillon changed. what makes that game so special is that it's the last game of the regular season with everything riding on it. before the playoffs the winner had a great chance of being state champs. since the playoffs the winner most likely will make the playoffs. on a bad year winning that game makes the season a little better.
another thing that makes it great is watching the other team to try to get a handle on how the outcome will be. most times it never goes the way you think.
i've gone to that game for the last 47 years and i have to say it's become my favorite day of the year, but i feel if it was an early game it would lose alot of what makes it so very special.
LET'S GO PUPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
