I have never read such B.S. in todays Independent as I have today in regard to the "stink " at the sewer plant.
It is odd that this B.S. comes the day after the Rate Increase is no longer DOA. Come on people give us a break.

How can they measure how much a stink is reduced by a percent??
If it stinks 1% it still stinks!

Obviously, you are not a scientist.
There are many ways this could be accomplished.
Here are a couple, utilizing web-cam technology such as they use to enforce the laws at traffic lights:
A web-cam could be attached to the side of the Goodwill building, aimed at the interior of cars as they approach the area. In each car, using lip-reading, they could measure the relative number of people in each car that turn to the other occupants and ask "OK, Who farted?"
A web-cam could be attached to a tree on the Towpath Trail one quarter mile north and south of the sewer plant. The relative number of hikers and bicyclists that make a face, stop and immediately head the other direction could be counted and compared to previous records.
Without using a web-cam, one could simply keep daily records of the number of vomit stains in the parking lots of the restaurants in the immediate area, since several people a day "lose lunch" immediately upon exiting the building and taking a whiff of the ongoing odoriferous gift our fine mayor has bestowed upon us.
Perhaps not quantifiable, but equally interesting, might be to track the attempted escapes from Indian River and Heartland Health. It might not just be incarceration that those people are trying to escape.
The floor is now open to any others that wish to make a serious contribution here...

Read the science behind the measurement approach to find out how....
Regarding the 25% stink still remaining, treatment plant insiders have anonymously leaked the source. It appears that Ron Halter never ate his tuna fish sandwich on his last day of the job. Along with the fish sandwich, a can of sardines and some fruit roll-ups were found in his Dukes of Hazard lunch box. City officials believe that residents should notice an immediate improvement by Friday morning. :tonguewave:

Here we go again - the whole world's problems are blamed on the Mayor again. The fact of the matter is that I have reason to drive in that vicinity at least three times per week; and I have noticed that the odor has tremendously improved. Rarely, does there seem to be any odor. Can't we ever commend the Mayor for anything? I think the water treatment plant has made great strides to handle this situation as best as possible, and I believe it has been working. With all the crazy stuff that happens in this world every day - why can't people ever look for the good in things??? Life is too short.....

talking about stink...it would have to come from those "lovely" orangy-colored, old gym shorts we used to have to wear...the ones some of us would try to go an entire year without taking home to wash just for the fun of it...
talk about odor problems, we used to have a plant here in findlay that you could smell clear across town (about 4-5 miles at least) when the wind blew the wrong way...now that is some serious stink!!!
puts a whole new slant on that old 60s song "BLOWIN IN THE WIND"

Like someone in the Inde's "On the Line" stated, let's wait until the dog days of summer and measure the supposed decrease in the stink level.....It always seems to be less in the winter.

They probably used the “Olfaktometrie” method.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odor
Then said it was 75% “Okeedokie”.
All I know is that if the wind is blowing the wrong way --
we’re still going to get 25% --

For all of the bantering that Ron Halter does on this subject, I don't remember anybody actually disputing the numbers and some of the "accusations" that he has made. Rather than make this personal, perhaps time would be better spent finding a remedy for this problem and also disputing the things he says rather than some of the other stuff I read on here.

I have also noticed this.
Mr. Halter made the decision some time ago to use his real name when posting.
His detractors continue to hide behind screen names.
Mr. Halter makes thought-out intelligent posts that normally contain verifiable information.
His detractors never attempt to refute anything that he says, they simple attack him as a person.
Mr. Halter makes post on MassillonProud on a wide variety of topics, and is a member of this on-line community.
His detractors seem to only come here to attack him when his posts might embarrass the mayor.
This situation speaks for itself.
Mr. Halter's detractors are giving credibility to his comments, and in fact make the mayor look not only bad, but guilty as well.

Halter needs to suck it up and learn to lighten up and laugh a little. He has beat this same dead horse to death for many years.
You say he is very diverse in his posting. I don't know if he is or not, because if it about the sewer plant or the Mayor its only his opinion that counts and its never nice. So much for his mother teaching him not to say anything if he can't say anything nice. HA.
This is a two way street so learn to take what you dish out.
Life is all to short Halter, learn to relax and laugh and enjoy what goes on around you. Stop being a hostage of hate.

Tigerlily,
Where did you get that picture of my dearly departed Uncle Clarence. He passed away a number of years ago when he went out for a pack of cigarettes. He told the family he was going to Navarre. He came to his demise in the area of the sewer plant, hence the last picture of him known to us.

Just got back from IHOP and walmart was there for the last 2 1/2 hrs . After that wonderful shopping experience we had to stop at Starbucks.
The point is we did not smell a darn thing. Now who's to say you didn't catch the wind just wright.
I'll be the first to tell you if it stinks but not today. I have not noticed it in months.

I, too, was out and about early this morning. I went into Wal-Mart at 8:30 this morning. When I came out of there, I went down to Lowe's and then to Starbucks. It was a beautiful morning, and I did not smell a thing. Perhaps some of you look for things.

Hey 5starred, My mother died when I was 3 years old. Whatever she told me I probably didn't retain. That could be the possible cause of what you refer to. I don't hate anyone, nor even the Mayor. I try not to post things that are not revelant. I am an expert on things relative to Wastewater Treatment, I am still a member of the OWPS Federation.
I speak on ongoing problems at the plant and the funding of the Wastewater Treatment Department. Who else is going to stand up for the citizens of Massillon. I like to think that I was partly responable for saving the city in excess of $4,000,000.00 for replacement of the Federal Ave. Pumping Station. I think I helped with the defeat of the last rate increase. I was the first person to find out about the flawed funding of the Arena Project. That was 3 months before the plug was pulled on the project. I sent Ed Pritchard at The Repository the information about "Global Armitage". The next day they printed the story.

Why are we still beating a dead horse? The Arena project was the only major endeavor by the Mayor that was not successful. There were no taxpayers dollars spent on the Arena project. There was a $1 million dollar grant by the State that was used on the infrastructure and base pad, of which is part of the movie theatre. Why do we dwell on one project of the Mayor's which was not successful. Why doesn't anyone ever talk about the countless projects that have been successful.
Can anyone name another city of the same size and stature of Massillon, Ohio, in this country that has a 12 movie theatre comples in the downtown area. What about the Hampton Inn? That was built using federal/state/private $$. What a beautiful addition to our downtown. The City each year gets Community Development monies from Uncle Sam. Countless private/public organizations get some of this money. What was wrong with using some of these dollars to build this Hampton Inn/Sarta center? It was a perfectly legitimate way to spend tax dollars - if you ask me.
What about the latest announcement by Shearer's potato chips? What a phenomenal addition that will be to our City - not to mention the additional jobs. Say what you will - the Mayor is ALWAYS working for the betterment of this community. I for one am proud of this City and the fact that we have a Mayor that truly cares for what he does!!!

It all starts with dung! It is proven that what you eat causes the smell that your dung emits. Now seeing that this problem arises from a collection of the towns dung, ridding the town of the odor would best be accomplished by everyone in town changing their diet. What really is being complained about here is that no one wants to smell their own dung! Now if you want a better smell start eating roses, the pink mints in the urinals, and drinking Febreeze, otherwise the smell will continue to stink like DUNG!!!

On a serious note though; I don't believe that anyone, anywhere has figured out a solution to the stink surrounding any sewage plant. Part of the problem seems to be the location chosen to build the shopping district. I live near Tampa, FL. Now i know that if CarlE has ever crossed the Bayside Bridge, he would have to agree, that coming in to Clearwater on this bridge, if you have a window cracked, you can smell that sewage plant for 5-10 miles either direction. Location, location, location. Not a good place to build.

For all those wishing to help with the stink problem, please, next time you are about to drop a load, drive over to Monument Park in Canton and use the public restrooms closest to Flushit (Fawcett) Stadium!

For sure. I'm not up there very often, Striker but the smell is bad. I can't imagine downtown being worse but I'll find out this weekend.
