I was viewing FOX News today and there was a press conference that was supposed to feature Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick regarding allegations that he lied under oath regarding a sexual relationship with a female over the phone.

This is very upsetting. The man isn't like Eliot Spitzer (former disgraced mayor of New York City), who sported various women during his tenure. Despite upsetting his wife and three sons, they are still behind the mayor and have asked him to continue as the mayor of the #2 toughest city in the nation.

This is not good: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080324/ap_on_re_us/detroit_mayor

DAWGH8R,

We'll just have to see how things pan out. Anyway, just to get your opinion, who do you think is the worse of the two...Mr. Spitzer or Mr. Kilpatrick?

Man...a Christian mayor (a man that put the city on his back) and a Jewish governor (who betrayed his trust in NYC) in hot water over sexual trysts. What...is a Muslim next? Or worse?

Uh, no. Kilpatrick is in hot water because he lied under oath. Spitzer is in trouble for money laundering.

Obie Wan,

I wonder how many blacks are going to come to the defense of their own native. He'll need them now more than ever.

Either way it turns out...Kilpatrick is in a fight for his reputation along with Spitzer but Kilpatrick has a better chance of winning.

Being a resident of Metro Detroit let me shed a bit more light on this issue.

Mayor Kilpatrick is being arraigned today at 1pm on the charges that range from obstruction of justice, perjury, to corruption in office. He is NOT resigning (although he should) but both local papers have suggested to him that he do so in front page editorials today. This issue is very serious. In addition to the charges that are known, there is the issue of a party involving strippers at the Manoogian Mansion(the taxpayer paid for mayors mansion) in which Mrs. Kilpatrick allegedly attacked one of the strippers who later mysteriously died in a drive by shooting.

A large majority of the African-American community is demanding that Kilpatrick resign, so the suggestion that they will stand behind him is unfounded.

Keith,

How can people of Kilpatrick's own brethren turn on him? I would think that largely because Detroit is about 80-90% black that they would stand behind him.

There goes my claim that Kilpatrick would win because of who he is. Ouch :stars:.

The people of the city(and region) realize that finally Detroit is making some progress in turning its tarnished urban image around, even if it is ever so slightly. The All Star game, super bowl and this weeks NCAA regional tournament (with the final four in 09) are all proof of that. No one wants this nasty scandal at city hall to stop that, hence the overwhelming numbers of people demanding Mayor Kilpatricks resignation. Obviously some folks will stand behind him no matter what. Those numbers have dwindled as the scandal has grown.

Keith,

I don't think this scandal will take away from what Detroit has accomplished. The Pistons winning their third NBA title, hosting Super Bowl XL (a Pittsburgh Steelers win for hometown native Jerome Bettis), the Tigers winning the American League championship, the NCAA tournament as mentioned, and an MGM Grand coming to the Motor City won't be tarnished.

But I'll tell you what: When Mr. Kilpatrick is cleared of these charges...some apologies will be due on the table!

Why should black people stand behind him just because he is black? If all that Keith says is true, how can you support someone of any race in doing these things, regardless of skin color?

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen. It appears that the evidence is pretty overwhelming. Kwami does have a very high profile defense team but they have their hands full. The Detroit Free Press got hold of 14,000 incriminating text messages between the mayor and Ms. Beatty which detail a lot of wrongdoing. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Keno, how freaking clueless can you be? So, no matter what the charges are that turn out to be true Detroit should support him because he's black and they are 80%-90% black? Is this the stupidest thing I've heard from you or WHAT? If you don't think so, let me give you an analogy that might help you a little bit.

By God, I'm standing 100 freaking percent behind Charlie Manson and the Tate murder back in the '60s. Why? Well, because I'm white and old Charlie is white. Good grief.

Keno, are you thinking straight?
That is such a stinking example of reverse racism that even Al Sharpton would be proud.

Or are you saying that all Blacks are crooked, thieving criminals and therefore are his "brethren" and there should be honor among all thieves?

Seriously, where he heck are you coming from with a comment like that?

Let me clarify my stances.

(1) CarlE, I wasn't claiming that Detroit should stand behind him because he's black. I'm not like "bighitter" who thought he could see between the lines on the old MassillonProud.com and labeled several posters as racists. My initial thinking was that they would be behind him because of who he was. That has gone out the door since.

(2) Lakewood, blacks stood behind O.J. Simpson when he killed his wife and Ron Goldman. Personally, my thinking was O.J. was responsible and still is to this day...I expected him to be found guilty.....but it didn't happen and let's not get into the jury on this because they stood behind O.J. (again, I thought he was guilty).

(3) No way was I alluding that blacks were crooked criminals and what not. I'd get my butt handed to me big time over that!

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions .There was nothing intended to be racial about this. If anyone got offended, I apologize. That was my thinking, no one agreed with me and I'm OK with that.

Bottom line, Kilpatrick is in a fight not just for his job but his family life and freedom too. None of his three sons want to see him go to prison but if that happens, what will become of them?

Upon further reflection, it would seem that we are confusing "would" with "should".
Keno used "would", which doesn't imply that he himself feels that they should, but rather that, based on his opinion of Detroit City Blacks, they WOULD do it.
Keno apparently has a low opinion of Black's in Detroit, as he feels that they are the mayor's brethren.

CarlE,

Here we go again...I said "I would think that largely because Detroit is about 80-90% black that they would stand behind him."

I didn't say Detroit should stand behind him because he's black. Thinking they should and saying they should are two different things.

And I don't have a low opinion of blacks from Detroit...come on. That's about as crazy as a statement can get (not directed toward you).

You can't have it both ways, Keno.

1. You think that they should stand behind him because he's Black.
or
2. You thought that they would stand behind him, in spite of the fact he's scum, just because he is Black like them.

Which is it?

Everything you said you didn't say, you said it-I'm black and didn't stand behind OJ. There are some 13-million blacks in America and most of the black people I know and I know plenty, thought OJ had something to do with the death of his wife and her boyfriend. SO when you state blacks supported this and blacks support that try intervewing every black person and when they ALL agree on something---then you can say blacks stood behind something.
