It's difficult because I've been attending games for only 25 years. However based on what I've seen, coupled with what I've read and heard, I have to go with these.

1-1964-Win over Niles (ending their 48 game winning streak)
2-1940-Win over Toledo Waite (a 28-0 shutout of this powerhouse)
3-1974-Win over McKinley (the comeback & dramatic touchdown)
4-1964-Win over McKinley (The "battle of the unbeatens." The Tigers come back from a 14-0 deficit to win 20-14.)
5-1994-Win over McKinley in the 100th matchup
6-1966-Win over #1 ranked Steubenville
7-1957-Win over Warren (Clock game)
8-2005-Win over McKinley (a decisive win after being soundly beaten by the Pups just three weeks before)
9-1930-Win over Cleveland Heights (ending their 27 game unbeaten streak)

Honorable mention: 1945-A 6-6 tie with Cleveland Cathedral Latin. They were a powerhouse then. A crowd of 57-thousand watched it at Municipal Stadium. I can't officially add it to the list because a tie is bittersweet.

Some of my favorite games? Well from ones I've actually seen....

1980, My Senior year (Class of '81) we get beat by McKinley 7-16 at our house....Then the next week we meet them in their house for the first game of the playoffs and get revenge, beating them 14-6!

1982, (Senior Class of '83) Mid season game, first ever meeting against Canton Glenoak. We heard chirping over here for weeks about how they were going to hand our @$$ to us. We kick off to Glenoak and they get MAYBE 3 yards of offense and have to punt to us....1st play after the kick return, Brian Dewitz throws a perfect bomb to Gary Conley who goes all the way for the TD only minutes into the game. The Glenoak fans were shocked and it kept them quiet and their players on their heels the rest of the game. We beat them 42-14 and the game wasn't as close as the score.

1989, Massillon goes 8-2 in the regular season and meets Walsh Jesuit in the first game of the playoffs. Walsh storms ahead of the Tigers and leads at Halftime 24-6. After a rousing Halftime speech by Coach Gary Wells, the Tigers came out fired up and scored the next 36 points unanswered, winning the game 42-24! I think that was and still is the biggest comeback for a win in Tiger history.

1994 THe 100th Massillon-McKinley game, still the greatest football game I've ever seen. High School, College or the NFL. Tigers pull it out in overtime after battling back and forth with the Bulldogs. In overtime McKinley scores a TD, but Josh McDaniels missed the extra point. The Tigers took over and on 2nd down QB Willie Spencer runs the option to the right. Just as he's being pulled down at around the 15, he pitches to Victor Redrick who was trailing and Victor sprinted in for the score. The Bulldog fans screamed that it was a "forward lateral" but there was no call...Nick Pribich came in and calmly hit the extra point for the Tiger win in a classic game 42-41!

Those are just 4 off the top of my head LOL.

Also one of my favorites !!

I also remember a Barberton game that was on the road, and played out much the same way.

I'd like to hear about "modern era" games. I'm 42, and the 1919 McKinley game doesn't hold much meaning to me !!

I made my list before we lost the server so I will have to pull out my list again and get back to y'all. The first two the come to the top of my head was the McKinley game in 1982 (my senior year) where we pulled out a tough one at PBTS 7-0 to complete a perfect season and head to the playoffs where we met Moeller in the championship only to come up a bit short. What I remember most about the game was the trip down to Columbus and the trip home. My green Monte Carlo was unrecognizable because of all the orange and black that we plastered onto the car as I travelled down with Fenton 57 and a couple of other clasmates. Watching the game in the Shoe was so awesome. The team gave a great effort but a couple of big plays in the second half cost us the chance for our first playoff championship. Who knew that it would be so many years again before we had another chance. And last years team broke "our" record for wins on the way to bringing us back to prominence. Of course we also had some classic games last year.... And this win this win is an instant classic... I could go on and on if I mentioned every one, but I will leave those two as my nominations...

One of my favoraites of all time was the 100th Mass-McK game in 1994. What a roller coaster of excitement.

The comeback against St.Eds in the playoffs last year was huge too.

My nomination is the 1988 Massillon-McKinley game!! "The mud Bowl"-- that is the season and game that put tigertown back on the map nationally!! Also-- the vote for the new school passed because of that game!!! Wehad so much team pride and unity!!!

Also, I have to mention 1991 Massillon-McKinley game when my brother scored 5 tds and had 302(both records in the series)

1983-- speilman, johnson, and dewitz were amazing all year and they cheated us from the playoffs-- 9-1 with no post season-- that was probably the best tiger team we had-- Period!!!

My personal favorites were in order:

1) The 100th game that we won in OT.
2) The 1980 Playoff game against McK that we won 16-7 after losing the week before.
3) The 1974 Mck game in which Eddie Bell caught the "Hail Mary" to win the game 20-15.
4) The 2005 McK & St. Ed's playoff games at the Rubber Bowl.
5) The 1978 Mck game that won 7-3 with Curt Strawder, Brent Offenbecher.

Also to add to the list was ALL the buttkickings we gave Longfellow!! LOL!!

... 5) The 1978 Mck game that won 7-3 with Curt Strawder, Brent Offenbecher....

I recall this game slightly different: Sunny & pleasant day at PBTS (unlike the '77 game at The Drip); McK leads 10-0 in the 4th when Strawder & Offenbecher finally get a TD, we intercept the Pups next drive, and get another quick TD to lead 13-10 and win. I don't remember the exact statistal numbers, but Offenbecher had a phenomenal 2nd half. A fist-fight followed ON THE FIELD at the south end-zone as the McK team & coaches were heading to the locker room... and we had a fence around the playing field in '79.
Meatchicken scouts were obvious to me at the game as they wanted Offenbecher, but he went to Wake Forest (turning down the UofM and Notre Dame.)

My other favorite games in Tiger history, not previously mentioned:
'72 at Upper Arlington (a 14-0 win)
'72 at Warren (a 7-0 win)
'77 vs Gahanna Lincoln (a 28-22 win)
'96 vs Lima Sr (to put a "STFU" on a college dorm fellow from years gone by)
... and our next game vs Cincy Princeton.

All the games mentioned are great ones, but IMO the one that stands out is the 100th game. That game met all the criteria to be considered the best ever. 1st of all, it was against McKinley. Then you get into the hype, national exposure, the fact that both teams came in with good records, it was a shoot-out, went to OT. It's the best football game that I have ever seen on any level.

Smitty,

Your recollection of the '78 game was right, that was Offenbecher's Sr. year and it was played at Massillon.

(the '77 game at the Drip featured Offenbecher and Strawder too - I believe Massillon won that game 21-0. In the '77 game, I remember the throwback post to Strawder for a TD and Offenbecher flying through the air, taking off at the five yard line in a snow storm for another TD. Someone has to find a photo of that TD - it was amazing to see how high he was off the ground as he was coming down head first into the endzone).

I remember that fight in '78: I believe it started before a play (?) when the center from McK must have said something to Dirty Harry Foster, who was playing NG, and Dirty Harry didn't like it and just laid out and slugged the center - the benches cleared and of course some thugs from Canton came running out of the stands onto the field. A really ugly scene could have been worse if some Massillon coaches, led by coach Thomas, had not run out ahead of the pack and stopped it.

1977 LA 8th grade team was undefeated and unscored upon !!!

My 7th grade year we went 21-0! 8th grade 6-1 and my freshman year we wnt 21-0!Noone could compete with Longfellow then!

9th- hostetler, norris, horner, etc,...
8th- myricks, white, martin, hack, etc,...
7th- stafford, myself, slutz(2), relford,etc...

During a 4-5 year period we couldnt be beat!
Pierce, buckland, dixon, sparkman, turkal,Travis M., Blake, sherter, etc,...
follwed behind us and didnt lose either! LA didnt get a city championship one year until Ashcraft and wright came along the following season!
Coach Keith Herring, Jeff Huffman, Morningstar, and Harry Iffandiedes had talent and were excellant coaches! The transfers and "R's" messed up a 5 year championship run when we got to high school!!

IMO the greatest game in Tiger history has to be one from the greatest rivalry in HS football.

The back to back comeback victories in 1964 and 1965 would have to be on the short list, as would the 100th game.

But the game that started the 38 years that made Massillon the most dominant program in Ohio HS history was the 6-0 win over McK in 1935 at Lehman Field.

In fact, that game could arguably be pointed to as the game that changed the game of football into what we have today. It put not only Massillon, but Paul Brown, on the map...and the ensuing publicity put the TSB on the map, which led to TBDBITL, which led to the types of bands we now see in both HS and college...while PB was putting OSU on the map, and then used that success to turn the NFL on its ear.

If Massillon had lost that game, it is doubtful that PB would have survived in Tigertown, as unthinkable as that seems 71 years later.

In November of 1935, success in a high school football game provided the impetus for the evolution of modern day football, and all the hoopla that goes with it.

I agree with C44. I saw both the 64 and 65 Massillon-McKinley games on CH. 5 out of Cleveland and both were GREAT games coming from behind to win.

I also saw in person the 100th game and what a see-saw battle that was!!

Since PB left Massillon even before I was born, those would be my three choices with either the 64 (Massillon 20-14) or 65 (18-14) game being tops.

Which year was Tommy James' boy one of the game stars?

Offenbecher went to Wake Forrest thinking he'd have a better chance THERE to challenge to be the starting QB as a freshman... but an unknown kid named Jay Venuto got a shot and led Wake to it's best season ever... Brent got p.o.'d and transferred to OSU and spent most of his time behind Art (You Bet!) Schlischter.

warren1st: The 1965 Tiger backfield was Will Foster and Tommy James III.

The key play was Foster diving and catching a fourth down pass that bounced in the dirt at the McK 20 yd line...lol.

smitty: Venuto was hardly an unknown. He was one of the top three or four QB prospects coming out of HS that year.

I wondered at the time why on earth Offenbecher signed with Wake with Venuto on board.

I could see him avoiding OSU and UM, because of their offenses, but he had no chance going to Wake.

TigerCarl and I had put together our lists (best wins, disappointing losses) in the early days of MP and DaveDawg posted them in his column. Last year when this came up after the Iggy game (or later in the season), DaveDawg tried but could not locate our lists.

Here goes for another (brief) shot:

1. 1974 McK (still have my record album made by WTIG). McK was #1 in the state and had given up only 12 points all year. McK defeated Warren 19-6 the week after Warren destroyed us 35-10.

2. 1964 Niles. The two schools finally meet. Niles won the state titles in '61 and '63 by beating woefully inadequate competition when compared to the Tigers (although played about the same as the Tigers against common opponent Warren). Tigers had barely survived Cleveland East in Earle's first game. Niles kept driving the whole night only to change their game plan once inside the 20. I was rummaging through some old newspapers this summer and found the Inde article of the signing of the contract for this game the week of the JFK shooting.

3. 1935 McK. As CATS44 indicated, propelled PB to greater things. Bob Glass scored the TD and the Tigers, who had destroyed everyone except McK the last couple years, finally overcame their last obstacle to greatness.

4. 1964-1965 McK As chronicled above. In '64, Tigers scored all 20 points in 4th qtr to erase McK's 14-0 lead that they held since the first quarter. Both teams undefeated and untied going in- Sheegog scores winner with 54 seconds left while McK drives inside Tiger 20 in final seconds. Earle Bruce vs. Don Nehlen (next faced each other in '87 when OSU faced West Virginia).

5. 1922 Cleveland Shaw- the big state power at the time. We won 7-6 by scoring in the last 27 seconds. Propelled us to our first recognized state title.

6. 1940 Toledo Waite Tigers held Waite, who claimed to be the real '39 Ohio champ, to one first down and only the rain held the Tigers to only a 28-0 win.

7. 1948, 1949, 1954 McK. All 3 years we were heavy underdogs to the undefeated Pups. Each time we not only won, but dominated them to win state titles with a 9-1 record (Although a 6-0 win in '49 wasn't exactly dominating). The '48 game, in Mather's first year, brought the Tigers back from the duldrums of the middle 40s and set the tone for a 7-year streak of state titles.

8. 1957 Warren. The clock game. Tigers defeat undefeated and #1 Warren on last play of game 20-14.

9. 2005 Ignatius. Finally got that monkey off our back and in thrilling fashion. Weisand was reminiscent of Sheegog's coming off the bench in '64 against McK.

10. 1980 McK playoff. Tigers come back from being embarrassed 16-7 at PBTS to putting on a gutsy defensive performance to beatthe Pups 14-6 the following week at Fawcett. It was the Tigers' first playoff win - ending 8 long years of frustration punctuated by Princeton and Padua.

11. 1994 McK (Regular Season). 100th game as chronicled above. Really not sure where to put this- a fantastic and historic game, but neither team had a #1 ranking or playoffs on the line.

12. 2004 Friendship Edison. OK- just kidding.

My favorite non-2005 Tiger games that I personally saw:

1974 McK. Still can see Eddie Bell catch it at the 5 after beating his man by 5 yards. The bedlam was unreal.

1970 McK. Larry Harper returns the kickoff 95 yards and Tigers cap undefeated season 28-0 in the mud (Changed uniforms at halftime!).

1972 Upper Arlington. Hannon runs wild for 212 yards, but Tigers need two second half scores to win in a PACKED UA Stadium (which now looks like a soccer and lacrosse field with yardlines incidentally marked on the turf).

1994 McK (both games- the second one for the massive crowd). Also the game in between against Charles Woodson when Fremont threw instead of giving it to Woodson with 10 seconds left.

1977 McK In the snow- Faust says he's glad he doesn't have to face the Tigers.

1982 McK. Spielman scores only TD in 4th qtr. in surprisingly close and fierce battle. Need Manion's INT with 2 mins to go to ice it.

1991 Toledo St. Johns Tigers rebound from late 3rd qtr 21-7 deficit to win 42-21. Reminiscent of '89 Walsh Jesuit, but I wasn't at that one. Falando takes a pitch and rumbles 80 yards for the go ahead score in everyone's favorite stadium- the Rubber Bowl.

1978 McK. As chronicled.

1996 Lima. Beat the eventual state champs in front of only 7000 because of the remnants of a hurricane. Tigers rolled after Lightfoot booms a 67 yard punt that turned the tide.

1993 Mansfield. Tigers blow out Tygers 31-0 in 4th quarter after they tied it 22-22 in a wild one at Arlin Field.

1978 Jackson. I was in the Jackson band ("Purple Army") at PBTS, which our director detested. I got to march on the hallowed turf wearing orange and black socks and a Tiger T-shirt under my uniform. Tigers blow open close 1st half to win going away 42-0.

I'm thinking of games in the late '90s and 2000's, but I'm too tired to write anymore!

I have this game on tape. I've watched it too many times to count. An awesome comeback.

I could never understand why Don Nehlen was so big on him. While a fine high school QB, I just didn't see him as a starting QB at either OSU or UM.

hate to sidetrack the thread but i met coach Nehlen last week. very nice guy

Smitty, your right about the score. All I remember was that Offenbecher to Strawder was unstoppable that game. They ran 82/92 Out like every other play and completed it. I don't remember the fight after the game, I was in the student section towards the north end zone celebrating.

I remember my brother had 229 yards in that game!( the only player to win stark county player of the week 5 times in a row)

monte81- Both Travis and Falando were unstoppable from mid-3rd quarter on. We actually ran out the clock on the 1 yard line- otherwise it would've been 49-21 (42 points in 15 game minutes).

I recall the Inde story where Travis said he had only eaten a donut all day before the game!

OB, do ya think ya have enough to go on?

I'll say the 1994 McKinley game (100th Game); the 2005 Ignatius game; the 2005 St. Ed's playoff game off the top of my head.

Everyone knows trav was the best running back to come out of massillon. What made him so special he never acted like his was better than anyone. He was always respectful, and a good friend.Monte, how is he doing? We all grew up together but i have not seen him since high school.

He's doing good. Looking for vibrant for an old guy haha. I didnt talk to him much but i heard a Mck fan say to him "boy Massillon sure did get their asses kicked last week" and he responded "Yea but they will rebound" and sure enough we did! He was driving a sweet lookin Benz too!!! We were watching the browns game and everytime someone from WV was on the screen he had a story about them. Hes very proud of his players.
