UC-Bucks game moved to OSU
The University of Cincinnati will not host the Ohio State football team at Paul Brown Stadium in 2012 as originally scheduled.
Using an option that was included in the original 2003 contract, OSU officials indicated that they did not want to play UC at PBS.
UC then agreed to play the 2012 game at Ohio Stadium on the OSU campus in Columbus after negotiations that will net UC $1,000,000 in compensation from Ohio State.
Those payments are to begin immediately and will be used to fund the new football initiatives at UC, such as the practice bubble and new practice fields, according to a release issued Tuesday by the UC athletic department.
“UC had no legal recourse, nor means to stop this action from taking place due to the language in the original contract,” athletic director Mike Thomas said in the release.
The 2014 game, the last one in the current contract, will be played in Columbus.
UC will be paid $375,000 for this final game under the current agreement.
“You know how I feel,” said UC coach Brian Kelly. “I want to play them. My philosophy has always been that we need to play Ohio State. If they don’t want to play here, I’ll play them in a parking lot in Xenia.”
UC, which plays in the Big East Conference, and Ohio State, which plays in the Big Ten, are the only two schools in Ohio that play in a big-school Bowl Championship Series conference.
Ohio State’s last visit to PBS was in 2002 when the Bearcats nearly upset the Buckeyes, who were ranked No. 6 at the time and then went on to win the national championship.
UC drove to the Ohio State 15-yard late in the game, but failed to connect on four passes into the end zone, with the Buckeyes’ Will Allen intercepting the final pass to preserve a 23-19 OSU victory before 66,319 fans, the largest crowd to see a college football game in Cincinnati.
It was Ohio State’s first appearance in Cincinnati since 1911.
The two teams played again in 2004, with Ohio State winning, 26-7, and in 2006, with Ohio State winning, 37-7. Both of those games were played at Ohio Stadium on the OSU campus in Columbus.
