And into the fire this Friday at Mentor. I'm sure they're more than waiting for us- especially after falling last night to Iggy. This is their "post-Moeller" week. We need to recognize that.
We took our first baby steps back. We need to continue!
Still, outstanding win- we're coming back... again!
Great atmosphere - great crowd throughout the game and especially on key defensive situations!
After being down 17-7 to their quick strike offense, it would've been easy to give up- especially after last week. But the Tigers showed what they are made of and played TIGER FOOTBALL with brutal offensive line surges for the 2-4 yard gains that wore that team down.
We never quite stopped their offense, which was quick, but we changed things up on them enough- especially finally getting pressure on their outstanding QB that forced some key mistakes. Key hits by Scassa, Daily, Gamble, Yoder, etc. I believe it was Miller who knocked away their would-be go ahead TD- a heads-up gutsy play that forced a FG instead of a TD. One amazing thing I saw consistently (in addition to the stamina of our two-way guys) was the speed of Yoder- even though he sometimes didn't catch their speedsters, he was always there!
We obviously still have alot of room for improvement- especially mental errors that those were there can painfully recall- trying to pick up a fumble, not letting punts go, plenty of false starts, etc.- as well as non-football behavior errors here and there. We made those mistakes, yet still won. We may not be able to keep recovering from them in the future.
Couragous player of the game- Bobby Huth! The TD right before half was right after taking a (penalized) vicious hit. He hung in there and kept his cool the whole way- often stepping away from tackles.
I see Gamble rushed 35 times. Only 9 short of the Tiger record by Jim Smith in '67 against Big Red. Most of Gamble's runs were like Smith's- bread and butter 2-4 yard pushes into the line that eventually took its toll on Chandler's def. line.
After the Gamble pass to open the game, it seemed we weren't reaching into our playbook enough- often looking like last week in our playcalling. However, toward the end of the second qtr, Stacy took some (and I hope not all) gadgets here and there that I believe really had Hamilton thinking. Was the fake punt a designed deception for Daily to draw a pass interference penalty??
I wonder if Chandler is wondering how anyone can beat us 48-14. I'm still wondering that myself- but we must keep that score seared in our heads!
All in all, it was a great change in attitude and effort from last week from ALL (including fans) involved. Let's keep all that as we put this one to rest and, by necessity, move forward!
BEAT MENTOR!!
