Just came home from work and 17th and Lincoln way was closed due to an either an accident or cars not being able to make it up the hill there.

Geez, I just got in the door myself and the roads are getting pretty bad. I am saying my prayers that the school busses will be able to get all of the kids home safely today. I didn't see one city truck out plowing.

I agree. THat makes me wonder....if your an administrator in the massillon city school district what do you do with al of the students who drive? Would you honestly feel safe letting them drive home with the roads the way they are?

About the city trucks I hear the city is out of Salt. Secondly when I was in school (Class of 1994) when a storm like this hit or was comming they dismissed early to ensure that everyone got home safely. I dont think they do that anymore. At least I have not heard of it. Becareful out there its very dangerous out there. Does anyone know what Code Level we are under? I know that under certain codes you can either get a ticket or even in severe cases arrested.

It's definately a concern. I am glad my kid isn't driving, but am still worried for those that are. I know some might scoff at this, but when all of the weather forecasts are predicting the same thing since last night, even possibly up to 2 feet of snow starting at 7 this morning, I think they should have just gone ahead and canceled classes today for the kids' safety.

Kamd50, 2ft? Your kidding right? I heard 1-3 unless they changed it. None the less everyone use extreme caution. It is however comming down like crazy out there with some blowing and drifting.

Holy crap! I just looked outside because I heard spinning of tires, and there is a guy out there stuck, and all he is doing is burning the rubber off of his tires, lol! Seriously, it is so bad, you can smell it! Plus there are two other vehicles stuck right up the street. I don't know if they are sliding and can't get any traction or what. I live on a brick hill and it gets almost impossible to navigate on if the city doesn't take care of it.

Speaking of, I cannot believe that they haven't been out here since we are on a heavily traveled school bus route.

The city is said to be out of salt to do the roads. Use caution is the best advise I can give you or stay home unless you HAVE to go out.

Seriously 2ft Kamd50?

I have also heard that as well. The storm has changed its path and we are supposed to get more snow then Cleveland.

Hope and pray all the kids get home safely and everyone else.

It’s going to be a rough ride home if fear……just go s l o w.

Maybe one of these would help… http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/28/28_4_2v.gif

When you get home…just snuggle down and stay put if you can.

We came home from Sams Club at about 1:00 PM The roads in Jackson Township (Portage, 241 & Amherst were awful). When we got home in Massillon, Our road were just as bad. I thought that I heard all the TV and radio stations warning us of this.

The Service Director said that we have plenty of salt in todays paper.

Besides the salt isn't really the issue. Those trucks should be out there plowing the roads when there are kid's lives to be concerned about. My son just got home and said the bus was slipping all over the roads. And the worst of it is that there are still children who are not even out of school yet.

3:45 and just saw the first snow plow go up the street for the day. I hope they get the bus routes cleared in time for the little ones that still have to make their way home.

The Stark County Sheriff no longer uses that system. The Summit County Sheriff simply issued a statement a couple hours ago. "If you don't need to drive, don't."

I took a vacation day to umpire a high school doubleheader today. My wife came running in and said its snowing! We got about 1-1/2 inches. Its now melted but the kids here had NEVER seen snow. I talked to a girl who was 17, had never saw a real live snowflake. There were probably 100 wrecks on the road. I walked everywhere I went today.

Just to let you all know, we here at the street dept are doing the best we can to plow the roads. The salt is almost gone and with all the traffic and heavy snow fall its hard to keep up with everything. My advice to you is to stay off the roads unless you have to be out so we can get the roads clear.

hey, this is one person who is not going to complain about the road crews...bless you all having to be out there...stay safe...i know it's a job i wouldn't want...
this is an ongoing battle...one not won as long as the snow is still coming down...i know it is going to get worse before it gets better...hey, why not stay home and enjoy the break from life's craziness??? other than a life and death emergency...there's no place like home:laughing:

just think, years ago, we could be snowed in for days or weeks at a time...we have nothing to whine about with all our modern day stuff...tv, radio, internet...and we can even (GOD FORBID) take time with our families (hope the sarcasm is coming out on that one)

fun idea here...why not have the family write a memory thing about the "Blizzard of 08"...then they can share it with their families in 20-30 years just like many of us do about the blizzard of 78...wonder how this one will compare???

Nice thought, Bev. Unfortunately, some people like my husband, had to drive into work this morning at 6:30 a.m. regardless of the weather or road conditions. I'm actually surprised that he made it the way people are talking about 21:angel:

I am also concerned about the animals that some keep outside. They may actually get either snowed into or out of their shelters. I sure hope people are humane enough to take enough time to make sure that their pets are ok and bring them in out of this terrrible weather.

I live south of Wooster , we have drifts between 4- 6 feet deep. My husband is a deputy and they spent most of the night pulling people and their cars out of these snow drifts. I guess nothing can stop some people from going out to the bar.

Today is a movie day at our house until this afternoon then everyone around here gets out the 4 wheelers and sleds so all the neighborhood kids can get out and play.

Nothing will top the Blizzard if '78. What we're getting this weekend is a long, heavy snowfall. Winters were always like this when I was a kid;we went out and played in this stuff, got soaking wet, came in and went down to the basement by the furnace and changed into dry clothes, then went up and chowed down at dinnertime because playing outside in the cold gave you a huge appetite.

I wasen't living in Ohio in 78,I moved up here from florida in 92. I think this is the most snow I have seen come down in one day. The roads are so bad that my Guard Unit cancelled our drill weekend this morning. Of course they waited till I was almost there before I got my phone call about the cancelation.

It wasn't so much the lack of traction, but rather the drifts that were the cause of my problems this morning. Good thing I tossed the shovel in the car this morning.

And yeah, Blizzaks are sweet tires!

Rushfan: In 1979 or 1978 we had our record low temperature at the sewage treatment plant on the official National Weathe Bureau thermometers. The reading was - 29 o F.

I have a copy of the page from the operators log book that recorded it. It is in a file down in my basement. When I dig it out, I can give you the exact date, time and year.
