So here's what I've been up to...
Art Displaced: Neighborhood Natives
So I'm all about Massillon, as you may have read in the "for Massillon" thread. (http://massillonproud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7838)And being part of this awesome community, I think we can all do something to make it a little better.
So some friends and I (the Ananda Center) came up with this idea to bring people downtown, help fill the empty commercial spaces, and support some local artists.
(What? artists in Massillon? Can it be true?)
Yes. These are our "Neighborhood Natives". We'll put the artist work up and have an opening reception. This opening reception (party) will includes refreshments provided by hometown restaurants, and feature live music by a hometown musician. These will be the last Saturday evening of each month, free and open to the public.
Are you smelling what I'm stepping in?
Free party, Downtown, Awesome art, on a Saturday night.
These will not be the snotty and boring art events you might expect. These are the people you went to High School with, the people you work with, and they have something amazing to share.
Now I could feed you a bunch of B.S. about how you should support the arts, its culture, blah, blah, bah. But really we are just a bunch of art geeks that want to show some cool art, throw a really unique party, and have a good time!
You'll be missing out if you don’t attend these rockin’ events. All the cool kids will be there! :smartass:
The hidden jewels of Massillon are its artists and someday maybe the next Shepard Fairey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepard_Fairey) or Scott Musgrove (http://www.scottmusgrove.com/). Perhaps you'll be able to say you knew them "back-in-the-day".
Many of these artists sell more than those pricey painting, the new trend in art is to sell things like stickers, buttons, t-shirts and other smaller dollar items. So come and start your own Massillon’s local artists collection. We’ll be doing 12 of these events, can you dig it?
And this isn't Just about the arts, it’s about Downtown. Come to our art event, but also explore the other things downtown, eat at a downtown restaurant, have a drink, and take note of some of the other great things we have downtown, gift shops, clothes, even a music store.
so here's the flyer for the 1st of 12 . . . Come downtown March 29th . . . Maybe I'll see you there!

I attended Bili's event at the Massillon Museum last summer, I believe, and let me tell you! What a cool deal!
Tons of original artwork, fun, food and music!
I'm sure these new events will be all that, and more!

Bili, I was at the museum show and had a blast. The wife and I took the kids (4 and 2 year olds) and the ska music really got their blood flowing! It was great! They danced around so much and we had more fun watching them! You probably had them in your pics that the museum took and posted online.
Plus you had some great pieces on display.
We didn't make the Art Syrcus as we were camping.
Same thing with the 24 hour painting session that you had.
Seriously, we need to connect. We know some mutual people and I would like to see about getting involved in something. I have been struggling within the local art scene for 15 years now and have become sort of a recluse in my own studio, hoping that something happens that I can show my peices the light of day.
When I have some time I will PM you.
Glad to see something happening!

And if they DO know about it, crappy coverage will get in the Stark County paper formerly known as the Inde.

CarlE, you are dead on. I can't tell you how many times I have been reading the paper at dinner, or after dinner, and only then found out about an event at the Massillon Museum, FOR THAT NIGHT! :wtf:
They might have higher attendance if they printed info more than 12 hours prior. Maybe more people could see what is going on. Then maybe there wouldn't be so much opposition to a levy to keep the doors open. Everything costs money, and I think that the museum is doing a fine job within the last 4-5 years.

Yeah sometimes its tough, to seek out everything thats going on in town.
I'm kind of becoming friends with Erin (reporter) at the Inde. She's been great about reporting on what the Ananda Center does.
Usually people try to let the paper know about whats going on, but they dont want to tell people to early cause then they are affraid everyone will forget.
So usually we will do press releases or contact the paper just a few days before the event so that it gets printed just before it happens.
Anyway, Art Displaced is going to be really cool and happen every last Saturday of the month.
March29th, April 26th, May 31st, June 21st(this is Art Syrcus), July 26th, August 30th, September 27th, October 25th, November 29th, December 27th, Jan 31st 2009 , February 27th 2009.
Right now We have an Artist (Scot Phillips) lined up for April in the empty storfronts at 44 & 48 Charles ave. for this project.
We have an artist in mind for May, but we am still seeking out the Artists of Massillon. Its our hope that more of them will make themselves known so that we can help promote, share, display and maybe even sell their work!
So if you've got a friend, who's a Massillon "Native" and has (or can make) a large body of artwork... have them contact me!
its $50 to be in the show, but well worth it. selling more than $50 of art is not hard, even in Massillon.
We are using a different empty commercial space in downtown for each show. So if you know of any, or know an owner looking to showcase the space, help the artists, and help downtown, this is that opportunity!
Thanx for all the positive feedback on this project!
Ron Copeland (the Artists who's work will be featured March 29th) works right here in Massillon at Engravers Gallery. His stuff is awesome!
My wife and I commissioned a peice from him. And I have collected several of his stickers and magnets. I can't wait to show off him and his work that Saturday night!
Sorry for the rant. you sparked my passion! The Ananda Center has a few more secret plans for "Awesome Art-ness" happening in Massillon! So keep an eye open for it. :)

The event on the 29th that you have advertised, is this kid friendly?? My 11 year old son is an amazing photographer and has been looking for a place to display and possibly sell his pictures.

Although Copeland didn't necassary have children in mind when creating his work, none of it should offend.
Copeland's work is apporpriate for all ages. He'll be there that night so perhaps your son can "talk shop" with Copeland.
If his stuff is good, he could take it to Second April in Canton and see what they say. But I would suggest visiting the gallery and being familiar with it before making an appointment to show them his work.
BTW..... here's a short promo video for this show...

Chillin’ at an art show has always been where the avant garde and fashionable are. There was no acceptation here in Massillon. Saturday March 29th was an unforgettable night we had over 200 people attend! Many artists from the area were in attendance including Scot Phillips, Angela Battista, Megan Mars & Steve Ehret. Massallonians of every demo graphic came! All of the Artsy kids came to hang out downtown and experience the food, live music and art! A new trend among artists is to sell low-dollar items affordable to all. Many people know of the powerful art movement happening here in Stark County and are starting collections of their own. Ron’s vinyl stickers of ’Atomic-Girl’, grenades and gun-wielding penguins were sold along with many small prints of Copeland’s fascinating photography. This started off several Massillon Artists collectors.
Special thanks to Julie of the Ananda Center and Denise (Copeland’s lady) for all the delicious treats that were available at the show. Jherrid Reeder played guitar and sang beautifully, if you didn’t get to hear his talent, you missed out on some great original tunes! Ron Copeland’s Screen prints, photography and adhesive vinyl design were a big hit. So much in fact that he sold over $400 worth of art! Why drive out to that ’urban sprawl’ when the most interesting and exciting happening right here in downtown? Downtown is the cool place to be on Saturday night. With the success of the Copeland show, we anticipate an even larger attendance to our next downtown event! Don’t come just to support the arts, come because that’s where all your friends and the other cool kids will be! Check out all the pictures from March 29th here in the myspace pics...
