Please try to keep all GWB, John McCain, Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, comments off of this thread.

I'm curious as to why you consider yourself a Republican or Democrat. What are the things these parties do that garner your vote. Is it the way you were raised? Is it a single issue? Is it the party platform? What gets you so motivated for one party over the other?

I am a republican because I agree with their core beliefs. I favor smaller government, state's rights(within reason), a strong military, the rights of the unborn, lower taxes, school choice, and the rights of individuals to succeed without the government punishing them for being more successful than another person. There is no political party that meets my beliefs 100%, but the republican party comes much closer than the democratic party. I think the platform of the national democratic party, while well meaning, comes much to close to socialistic principles for my taste. We republicans could stand to show more compassion to those who are without a job, health care, and the basic needs that persons in a giving and free society should have access to. There must be a workable solution somewhere between the "your own your own" approach and the "hey, don't worry the government will do it all for you" approach.

I guess I was raised Democrat but I think I lean more towards Republican on more issues. I was more then prepared to vote Republican this year but I don’t feel right about my choices Republican or Democrat and that’s a shame. With as many good people we have in this country of ours, how is it we cannot put a candidate up for each party that we are all proud of, but that’s another thread.

I agree with everything that reofan82 said accept for one thing, that I am pro choice when it comes to abortion. But then I’m for limits on abortion but that is another thread. I'm also against this war in Iraq mainly because of the way it has been handled. The agenda of the war, War on Terrorism I am for 100% it’s just the way we have gone about it that gets me. I was against the war in Vietnam as well but that’s another thread.

As far as the court system, I think it's a joke. As far as government, there's too much of it and too much of it spending our money! As far as welfare, it's out of control. Gun control, I think if you want to own a gun or 15 guns then you should be able to.

So I would have to say I'm more republican then I am Democrat but I'm not the tree hugger I'm made out to be. This war just pushes my buttons and I wish we would have done a better job at this one (thinking back to Vietnam).

And I’m not Independent!

Well said, and I would agree these points. I think the thing that made the United States great in earlier stages was the opportunity to prosper. If you take the "risk", you should be rewarded if you succeed. On the flip side, if you take the "risk" and fail, you lose.

I have no problem helping individuals IN TRUE NEED, but I can't stand what I call the 'welfare mentality' of the government should take care of me. I have control over my destiny, not my government. I feel the Democratic philosophy is getting away from the principles that this country was founded.

My biggest issue is taxation. The current tax system has been so manipulated and compromised over the years by both parties that it doesn't represent what it was intended to be. Also, the amount of wasted tax dollars makes me nauseated. It takes away any incentives to make your self better, and that is leading to our economic demise.

You should have changed your address at the Board of Elections, if you didn't want to vote in Massillon.

I'm basically Republican, but oft called a Libertarian / Capitalists.

1.) Gun control means hitting your target. It's the 2nd Ammendment that supports the rest of our constitution. We only need TWO gun laws nationally, and enforce them to the hilt: If you're not a convicted felon or "mentally disabled", you may own a gun; and if you commit a gun crime you get life in prison.

2.) There's too much "pork" in bills passed by BOTH parties, Republican & Democrat. Those idiots enjoy the wasteful spending of our tax dollars, then pass the blame when bridges collapse.

3.) Social security is neither. End it now, please; and take welfare with you. I'm tired of supporting those who WILL NOT support themselves.

4.) Our tax system is f---ed-up beyond belief. We need to eliminate the entire concept of taxing our earnings & savings; and rather put the tax on CONSUMPTION. A national sales tax would work!!

5.) If politicians want to "fix" the health care system, they'd eliminate health insurance. If you wanna go to the doctor... PAY FOR IT. (I could write a lengthy dissertation on health care.)

6.) Term limits. 'Nuf said.

Maybe you should hold off this year until you learn the system. You don't want to do anything that could hurt the country.
