Just picked up some interesting news concerning the local scene. Word is a new LOCALLY-OWNED  newspaper is in the works. Further word is that the publication already has some strong local financial backers lined up, as well as agreements for solid local advertising. Even further word is that the execs of the new paper are both local and experienced. I'm a new poster here, but I'll try and keep Proud fans informed. I've heard the paper will debut in time for football season.

Well, it will be the ONLY one that has a local flavor. The Inde sucks and I don't even read it when I'm at my parents. Good luck in this endeavor. I hope it has the right people behind it.

Good! I just cancelled my Rep today... got sick and tired of that fishwrap. Hopefully this new paper has a Sunday edition. For now I'll get the Beacon.

And I've got to tell you-if I was a parent of one of the students who were in the state speech tournaments or on any of the winter homecoming courts I would be simply furious with the way the Independent covered those events!!!

Group shots of all, all on the same page AND in black and white!!! (Under the old ownership: head shots of all speech participants, individual groups by school for the homecoming courts published on different days.) Let's give these kids credit for their excellent work!!

Talk about laziness on the part of the editor and his staff!!:furious:

Unbelievable!!!

We NEED a local paper that does the job right!!

I agree, a change will be nice, and needed. BUT.............. (there's always a BUT)

How long before the new paper reports something negative about Massillon...... (God forbid....), and all the haters come back out of the woodwork??? I love Massillon as much as the next guy/girl, but we sometimes are a bit unrealistic IMO when it comes to how news here is reported.

Sometimes, I think people forget that the Inde's job is not to be about the positive promotion of Massillon....... but to report the news.........

I'm not defending the Inde.... I agree, it needs an overhaul, and competition is ALWAYS good! It raises quality, or eliminates mediocrity.

I don't have personal knowledge of the speach team coverage, but I beg to differ about the HC court coverage. My daughter was on two different HC courts (football and basketball seasons) in two different years, and both pics were group shots and both in black and white. Not that my memory is all that good, but I am looking at them as I type still hanging on the side of my frig. Guess it's time to take those babies down and glue them into the scrapbook, lol

The start up of a local daily paper in a coverage area of roughly 100,000 people when there are already two long established papers on the scene would be costly...and very risky.

Add to that the fact that the print media is in steep decline, unable to compete long term against the internet, and such a venture seems foolhardy.

While the theory of competition as a positive is a nice thought, it is much more likely that a second Massillon paper would soon mean that we have none.

Doesn't Jackson have a fairly new paper (I know it's a weekly now)?

I see it all the time in all the news boxes around town.

Lots of ads and good news in it.

For former Jacksonites: Remember the old Jackson Journal- a weekly paper? When did that fold (I know where it folded- across the middle!)?

I just hope they don't call the new Massillon paper "The Federalist Paper" (The Inde might already have copyright claims on that!).

Actually, the Inde has a copyright on the name:

"County-wide, Fed-ass kissing, piece of garbage". They DO own that name.

We need something. The Independent is awful.Always a day late on the news, can't find scores in the sports section,On-the-Line callers talking about seeing robins in their yard or bashing Bush, incomplete T.V. listings, misspelled words, totally boring Commit-to-be Fit articles about fat people trying to lose weight, kiss up to the Federal League, kiss up to the mayor, and on and on and on.

The Inde hasn't been worth much since Chuck Hess, Jr, stopped writing sports and James E. Rasor stopped writing entertaining letters to the editor.

What about the reports of who was visiting whom in or out of town?
