Arts in Stark grant to help brighten up downtown
By ERIN PUSTAY

Downtown's dark and empty spaces will have a little more light, laughter and color after The Ananda Center gets a hold of them this spring.

Bili Kribbs, artistic director and board member for the Ananda Center, said that the group has partnered with the Downtown Massillon Association and the Massillon Main Street to present "Art Displaced: Neighborhood Natives," a series of monthly, one-night-only art exhibitions in Massillon's vacant spaces. Each month, a different local visual and performing artist will be showcased in a new venue, and a different food vendor will provide refreshments.

"Instead of avoiding the empty spaces," Kribbs said. "We wanted to draw attention to them by hosting a local artist who can sell their work and help to bring people downtown."

The exhibits will be funded by a $7,700 Arts in Stark grant.

According to Kribbs, the grant gets the idea off of paper and into the community calendar. The first event, featuring artist Ron Copeland, is slated for March 29.

"We committed to doing one event whether or not we got the grant," Kribbs said. "This allows us to do a whole year's worth of these."

The Ananda Center is one of 47 non-profit organizations across Stark County to receive a portion of the $130,000 in special projects grants that were awarded Thursday by Arts in Stark.
