View Full Version : What is your idea of "The American Dream"?

The term was first used by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states: "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

What is your idea of the American Dream? In the United States’ Declaration of Independence, our founding fathers: "…held certain truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." Might this sentiment be considered the foundation of the American Dream?

To me the American Dream is being able to raise a family of your own and always being able to take care of them. To give them not only a home but a future that they will be able to raise a family of their own. I don't necessarily need to be rich financially but rich with a happy and healthy family. If I can do this then I have lived the American Dream.

A piece of the American Dream to me is:

To be a productive citizen in the United States, pay my taxes (carry my portion of the load), be able to better myself and my situation. To raise a family, live honestly, not off the system as a way of life, live as God wants me to live and that is by treating my fellow human beings with dignity, and respect no matter their financial lot in life. "Try to leave this world a better place than when I entered in to it....."

unfortunately these words have lost their meaning over time.

To me the American Dream is being able to raise a family of your own and always being able to take care of them. To give them not only a home but a future that they will be able to raise a family of their own. I don't necessarily need to be rich financially but rich with a happy and healthy family. If I can do this then I have lived the American Dream.

that seems like a very good dream to me.

The American Dream is to be who and what you want to be. In a word - free. Not as simple as it sounds.
