I'd much rather see a public school/private school split.

i dont know ,there are some pretty big public schools.I think its a battle of attrition.truth is depth is allways a factor.how many years are we just 1 injury away from trouble competeing with these mega schools. I think its a great idea to split up D1,Make it D1-A & D1-B.This is inevitable.i hope they dont give schools a choice to playing up a division. like popeye says "I am what i am". In order to pass the resolution they will give schools a choice ,That being said massillon will never win it all.Sorry gang ,things aint what they used to be.

This definitely sounds like a good thing. I don't know why Ridgely had to put in that it would be acceptable if schools could opt up. In no other division do schools have that option. A D-3 can't opt to play D-2. As sacrilegious as it may sound to others, I think it would be a good thing for us to accept who we really are, a very small D-I school and play in the division in which we meet the criteria instead of trying to play over our heads. In some years, yes, we can compete with the bigs, but it is time to be realists and accept that there is no shame in being who you really are.

This seems to be a logical solution
I wonder who will get the 7th game. PBTS or The Drip

i think that the fact that our program can do so well when we're going up against schools that have over two times as many boys as we do is a testament to how great of a program we've had. we've truly shown that david can continually stand up to goliath.

that being said, there is no shame in being in a smaller division if that is where we truly belong. for us to win a championship it's always going to be an uphill battle. there will always be teams like st. x, iggy, etc. who will have talent out the wazzou.

If this goes through, there would be 13-14 teams in each region. Presumably, Massillon would go head-to-head with Hoover, Perry, Green, Fremont Ross, Wadsworth, Nordonia, Akron Garfield, Mansfield, Amherst, Twinsburg, Cuyahoga Falls, Lorain Admiral King and Lorain Southview.

Last year the standings would have been:

1. Hoover (8-2)
2. Nordonia (9-1)
3. Wadsworth (9-1)
4. Fremont Ross (7-3)
5. Perry (6-4)
6. Massillon (6-4)
7. Garfield (7-3)
8. Admiral King (6-4)

Under the current setup, only the top 3 would have qualified.

In Region 4, all of last year's Top 8 teams were larger schools and in Regions 1 and 3 combined, only 4 smaller schools qualified out of 16.

Teams from other 1AA regions to watch include Boardman, Fitch, Brookhaven, Toledo St. John's, Worthington Kilbourne, Westerville North, South and Central, Marion Harding, Pickerington North and Central, and Cincinnati LaSalle. 1AA could be a great tournament, with lots of parity.

Incidentally, the upper regions would also be half the size and even McKinley, with a 3-6-1 mark would qualify, although re-distribution of regional assignments might have kicked them out.

An interesting note is that although the overall field would increase by 17%, there would an increase in enrollment involvement of 32%, due to the larger schools being involved. I just don't see this one failing to get through.

We'll just take over the big show on Saturday night in Massillon and leave Sunday afternoon for 1A in Canton.

I'd much rather see a public school/private school split.
Me too!

I also agree witht he private/public split. But it will never happen, OHSAA is just like the NCAA. It's all about the $$$$$, OHSAA will not split the public and private schools because it will take away many good dollar games such as Massillon-Iggy.

I too agree it's time we play with the teams that are more similar to us. There are some great teams who don't get a shot due to teams as X, Elder, Iggy, Ed's. Did anyone see the D-1 Championship game? St. X had two if not three guys all wearing the same number, that's incredible depth.

I agree. We simply don't have the talent base that we did in the glory days. Players used to come from the surrounding areas that are now the districts of Tuslaw,Fairless,Perry,Jackson, and Northwest. Also, the industry is gone. We don't have men coming from Cleveland,Pittsburgh,or Toledo to work in the steel mills and bring their sons with them to play football.

Last year when they considered restructuring the Divisions, which would have put us in DIV II, many on this site were opposed to it, or at least were in favor of us playing up.
Now it seems like everyone is for it, because we would still be
considered DIV I.

All they are doing is creating a 7th division and giving it a different name, but just because it has DIV I in front of it, now it is OK.
We will be playing in the second highest division.
Call it DIV 1(B) and it is OK.
Call it DIV II, and it is not OK.

We have ZERO choice how we are classified.

The debate last year centered around the "opt up" option. If the same applies to this, then you definitely WILL see a heated debate. But lets wait til we know, and not derail the thread.

Folks we got to quit making excuses for not winning a championship.Mckinley has won 3 against much larger private schools, and they're not that much bigger than us.BTW we compete very well against the Bulldogs.
Mentor, one of the biggest schools in the state,Zero state championships.Glenoak...you can go on and on.
How was Mckinley able to do what they did in 97 98?why cant we do it?Do we lack confidence? Is there some common denominator the last 37 years that has transcended no matter who the coaches, administrators, players, etc are?
Even the team that lost to Moeller( w/Spielman)Everybody writes it off as Moeller being this unbeatable all star team.Well Mckinley shut those guys out in '81.

The Moeller team that beat us 35-14 in the finals was an unbeatable all-star team. They were awsome, but why shouldn't they have been. They had no boundaries at that time and could have recruited from any state and did.

BTW, in the game against Mck, the pups got on the board early with a field goal. From there on Moeller crushed them. You must be thinking of the championship game against Mck when they won 14-0. That was Terry Forbes last game at Mck as I recall.

Yes.Moeller defeated Massillon 35-14 in 82.Mckinley defeated Moeller 14-0 in the 81 final.Thats my point. All the Moeller teams back then were all star teams. Why did the Bulldogs beat them and we couldnt? What about 97 98?why cant we do that when a school slightly bigger than us did?BTW Mckinley had players playing both ways in 97 98.

Common sense just isnt very common is it?I mean come on,look at the discrepancy here in the big and small schools. Is there any way a fan as a tax payer to the schools could sue the athletic association?? just to light a fire under them in this matter?? :gasp:

Given that being a member of the OHSAA is voluntary.... no.
