Panthers earn top seed for tourney
INDE STAFF REPORT

excerpts:
Perry coach Rob Toth thought that playing a predominantly Division I schedule against Federal League teams that make up a large portion of the Panthers’ sectional/district tournament field might be crucial to his team earning the top seed at Sunday’s draw.................
Perry was the lone Western Stark team to earn a top seed ........................
What many thought would be a tight race between Perry and undefeated Timken wasn’t that tight after all, as Perry got the nod by an 11-2 count ................
“We felt going in it would be pretty close,” Toth said. “I was thinking it might be 7-6 or 8-5. The fact that it was 11-2 was sort of a pleasant surprise. The fact that it’s a Federal League-dominated district over there, you know you’re going to get the rest of the league votes, probably.
Massillon, which entered the draw at 4-11, received the 10th seed and will face No. 9 Boardman on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. ...........................
Massillon coach Matt Creamer was the lone coach to vote Timken No. 1 outside of Trojans coach Rick Hairston. Another anomaly of the voting was McKinley getting the No. 8 seed despite an identical record to Massillon and a regular-season loss to the Tigers.
“That’s just kind of how it is,” Creamer said. “I always vote logically and with a clear conscience. The rest of the Federal League might vote with their conscience but they don’t vote logically. I’ve been in this business too long to not vote logically and consciously, that’s why I voted Timken No. 1. They beat us at home and if they had something other than ‘Timken’ across their jersey they’d be one of the top eight teams in the state. I don’t have any doubt about that.”.....................................
Kudos to Coach Creamer

It cracks me up that the Mck coach voted Perry #1 and not Timken.
Then he goes into the bracket with the #1 seed, not the #2.

Does it matter? Either one of them are going to kick McKinley's asses and send them home. It WOULD have been poetic justice if it were Timken, though I agree with that.

Reminds me of how they screw Massillon players every year in the all-county selections.

You know that there was no way in hell that Mck's coach is gonna vote Timken #1 after all his star players left HIM and his bball program in shambles. But what else would you expect from Mckinley

Serious question: why is Creamer and the basketball program never held anywhere near the scrutiny of the football program?
I understand that football is king, the #1 money maker, what put Massillon "on the map". But - isn't Tiger pride, the drive for excellence in all areas, winning attitudes, etc. - important enough that the basketball team should have higher expectations?
Some awful good athletes and very talented basketball players have been through the program with what I would call average success. Yet Creamer doesn't receive one-twentieth of the nonsense Stacy and others had to endure.
Again - I'm not suprised there is a difference - just suprised at the huge size of the disparity.

unfortunately not many people actually care about any other sports. even with massillon's great success not too long ago people just don't pay much attention to the team.
i remember the days of dave grim and chris roth. man, those years were fun for massillon basketball. i'll never forget that game against perry at the civic center where grim tried to save the ball and ended up throwing it right to that 6'10" guy who was standing right under the basket. that loss was really tough to swallow.

I was at that game, too, and yeah,it did hurt to drop that one. Wasn't the big guy for Perry Chip Hare? He should have been playing for Massillon;he lived here.

Dont forget the shot dustin rhor (bart simpson) hit, a bomb from just inside the half court line to (I think) put it into OT. That was a great team...jerry spencer, lonnie simpson, terry pierce........et al.....
BTW, that ball didnt go to hare it went to brian malinowski, who went on to be a pretty good player at dennison......
a side note.....just prior to that game, jenson (i think thats the guys name, is he now a shooting coach for the cavs?) made a similiar play but he threw the ball down court (instead of under the basket) and the clock expired as the ball was rolling down the far end of the court.

???, I would think roth would have went up agains him most of the time as Grim was a great player outside the paint....hare and roth were not......
Oh, and a great injustice....no mention of grim in the trophy case outside the gym..........unless they just put something in it the past year.......

Boy,do I remember that shot! I was sitting at that end of the Civic Center when Rohr launched that beauty. I looked toward the side where the Perry people were and they all had their heads in their hands. Unfortunatly, during the overtime,we couldn't stop that one play they kept scoring with. Dustin Rohr was the last Massillon player I can remember who was automatic at the foul line.

i meant the epic scoring battles. the two top players, and two of the top scorers, in the county leading their teams against each other.

Spencer broke a record that year for most consecutive free throws.......both were good FT shooters.....
