I'm interviewing former coach Maronto Tuesday night and Shuff Friday for my next book. I'm open to question suggestions from some of Massillon Proud's experts. I know some of you played for these coaches and others may have an angle you think should be explored. This is your chance to help me do the best job possible.

Yeah jokingly can you ask Moronto why we had our Linebacker starting at QB?

Coach Moronto was a great motivator and coach! he changed my life in HS for the better. Without him being a father figure during my soph and jr. year I would not be the man I am today because I would be dead or in prison!!!

Tell Coach Moronto----Monte McGuire appreciates everything he did for me and I love him! I have not talked to him in a few months!

Coach Stu, Moronto, and Sonny Spielman were great influences!

I believe Massillons most famous cheer(TIG-ERS), started in the Moronto era when before a kickoff his team turned to the crowd and yelled TIG. Maybe you can ask him how that started. Slider, out!!!

Funny, I mentioned this in the MLK thread! Everyone has done something in life they regret weather it be a play call in a game, break up with girl/boyfriend, criminal activity, etc,... however it what you do after you made that mistake that makes the person!

Why turn the tape recorder off??? We have nothing to hide, it is tough to coach here. However, there is no better place to be as far as facilities and talent go. Without adveristy, there is no growth! Time to do some growing big boy!

Coach Moronto told me last year that his days in tigertown would of been differant. The game was changing in the mid 80's to the speed game and it took a few coaches extra time to adjust! Coaching in Florida coach knows speed and technique is the name of the game. if we would of used our strengths in 1986/87 we would of been undefeated.

I dont have a problem with keeping the players who might not play in the game, so to speak. Sometimes little small things like this can bring a team together. God knows we need that.

Kamd50

What about when the players are down on the field and turn to the crowd and raise their arms or helmets up in order to get the crowd to cheer louder? Same thing isn't it? To each his own, but I think anything to make a connection with the fans is a good thing as long as it isn't taunting or over the top.

There is no differance and thats why I kinda like it. You also hear them playing hells bells, crazy train and other songs LOUD. When we have to turn it down to pacify the older fans that are there for a social event.

I was one of 4 defensive starters returning!! You think we would of held teams to 10.9 a game without my fierce pass rush and intimidation!!!LOL Seriously, we had a great defense and a RB(Stafford) who could break it on any play!

Suspension may have cost us a title! We lost 3 games by a total of 9 points! 1. WGH we were cheated and caused a pause in the series for years. 2. Austintown--jeff Wilkens was a great kicker. 3. We played a horrible game against St. V's (DIII Champions) and lost 2 fumbled punts in the red zone and threw 2 INT's!

WGH lost to Iggy in the semis and we could of beat them ANYDAY that year! We were not intimidated by any team and wanted to play them BAD!!!!

It is common that we under use underclassmen throughout the years! I am still wondering why he took Myricks and Stafford out the game against the pups and let John Miller get smashed on the goalline!!! You give the ball to the best player just like Owens messed up against Iggy in 1991 on the 3 yard line!

My question is, why didnt maronto let Myricks return punts in the mud bowl at Austintown? He put him back there and would let him field the ball even though defenders were 25 yards away.

Mike Wilson was the coaches pet project in 1986, 1987 mark Kester assumed that role! Coach never let the starting backfield return punts or kicks! jason Stafford was the fastest player on the team for 3 years, had moves out of this world and NEVER returned a punt and rarely put on kickoff returns!:wall:

That's funny LLRose because it was the Naples "Golden Eagles" that Maronto defeated to win the Florida class 5A state championship a couple of years ago.

It was not fair for the refs to cheat and deny us a hard fought win! it is one thing to beat us on the field but to have calls blatently go against you repeatedly play after play is chicken@@@@!

Warren1st, I read your posts and always keep it real about sports and life in general but my friend Massillon was cheated out of a win that night! I played my tail off getting after Clayton Waite along with my teammates and we were cheated! 4 pass interference calls on the final drive with film showing that those calls were BS( he just didn't make the throws), ejecting our RB for getting kicked and punched after he scored a TD! I love the series but that night the refs took that game from us! We know it, they now it, and WGH knows it---PERIOD! You don't cheat kids when they worked as hard as we did for that victory! Clayton Waite, Correy Stringer---man we were up for that one and the refs did us wrong!

Coach Moronto has won more games in his career than any coach we have hired since his departure. If you want to keep it real---in 1986 we recieved a special injunction to get in the playoffs. All they had to do was beat the pups and Jeff Richardson ran all over all those all-americans in the "Toast Bunch" all day!!! The program scacificed our 1988 season and playoff DREAMS full of hometown boys for a bunch of steriod induced softies that never even grew up in the system minus Mike Norris, Gruno, and CJ Harris and a few others! Don't get me started on thoses chumps who couldn't muster up enough pride to live up to the motto----"Winners Make It Happen" It was not Coach Moronto's fault they didn't want it bad enough and coach still got them big time deals!

You played in the game. I saw the game. I know there's a big difference. You saw it one way and Warren fans saw it another. We're all biased for our own team. If the refs cheated you, SHAME on them. I saw nothing blatant but I'll take your word for it.

WHEN Massillon cheated us in the clock game in 1957, Warren Harding didn't pack up its tent and run home. That's what ticks me off so much about Lee Owens.

IMO, Owens cheated us out of 10-12 games of great football that none of can ever recover. Shoot, maybe you would have picked us off in 1990 when we won the State Championship and Massillon would have won it all.

In conclusion, that's the one thing I really dislike about high school sports - the officiating. There are TOO many games decided by "homers!"

Lee Owens maybe should not have cancelled the series but damn the calls were sooooooooooo obvious that they were cheating!

Anyway, I still love the WGH/Massillon games because they are ALWAYS physical!!! Corey Stringer is the only gu that actually kept me off his QB the majority of the game! Great player!!!

My name is John. I graduated from WHS in 1972. This is my first post on here. I had to register so I could inform you on the TIG ERS cheer. I was the one that got it started. About fifteen years or so ago, the president of Touchdown club, (Gary Miller) asked the club for suggestions to get the crowd into the games more. I always liked how Ohio State does the O H I O cheer. So after the meeting I went up to Gary and suggested we yell TIG ERS across the stadium. He liked the idea. The next week we made signs and went down on the field. Walt Bronsk announced over the PA what we were doing. The fans liked it, and it just took off from there. The next week we tried another cheer. Go Orange (East Side) Go Black (West Side) Go Tigers (End Zones) It didnt work. So from then on, we just stuck with the TIG ERS. Thanks guys and Go Tigers.

Thanks guys for the interest in how TIG ERS started. When we first did it, I was hoping that the cheerleaders and advisors would take it and build on it. I thought we could do more since we have a large group of fans on both sides of the stadium. But nothing else came of it. Oh well. I have other ideas of getting a group of fans together that want to cheer some at the games. We could all sit together in the same area and get some things going. Dont know if there would be any interest in that or not.

I liked that too. Not sure why it stopped or if it stopped- I thought I heard it in 2005 before the regular season game. If it did stop, perhaps it was because McKinley fans couldn't fathom saying two words in a row, one of which did not have four letters.
