I wouldnt know because I have never fired a gun, nor do I plan on it. I hate them unless in a case of self defense.

First of all....MTigers006, why do you hate guns? Guns are just an inanimate object or a tool. They aren't inherently evil. It's the bad people that use them that give them a bad name. DAWGH8TR and I are both licensed Concealed Carry Weapons holders and we both carry on a regular basis...and we aren't bad people...Don't be so quick to judge. I bet if you went out and shot a few of my pistols with me you'd have a blast and possibly change your opinion some.
Second of all, that place looks pretty cool DAWGH8TR, but I can go out here on the girlfriend's farm and shoot my AK-47, SKS or AR-15 anytime I want LOL.
Here's a little pic of me shooting my AR in a Combat Rifle Training course I took out in Colorado last year...

Not sure where this came from. I've never shot a gun in my life. For punishment purposes I'm much more enthralled with public hangings in town square. But thanks for thinking of me. I think you mixed me up with DAWGH8R.

I am the same way. Just how I was raised. My dad's cousin blew his head off playing with a gun that hadn't been locked up so my dad always kind of had a negative view on guns.
If people want to own them, that is there right. I just don't think I would ever want own one.

Fyrewood,
You're letting the ammunition fly! How did you do in your course?
It's just unfortunate how such weapons can end up in the hands of the wrong people in this day and age. That's the most painful thing out of all this. And it's obvious as to who the main culprits are holding them, it's too easy...

The most present numbers I could find were from 2005.
There were 16,885 alcohol-related fatalities in 2005
http://www.alcoholalert.com/drunk-driving-statistics.html
There were 10,100 murders by guns in 2005
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/05cius/data/table_20.html
There were at least 60 % more deaths by drunk drivers than guns ! That's astonishing !!!!

Every place I have seen puts the number of gun deaths around 30,000 per year.
http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2000/09.28/firearms.html
Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot to death in murders, suicides, and accidents. Another 65,000 suffer from gun injuries.
http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNSTAT.html
In the U.S. for 2001, there were 29,573 deaths from firearms
http://http://www.oag.state.md.us/Press/pr289.htm
As detailed in the report, over 35,000 people die every year from firearms, and another 100,000 are injured. An average of twelve children are killed with a gun every day.

What they did to that girl wasnt right. Funny, but not right. .50 Desert Eagle. Im surprisded the recoil didnt knock her on her little butt. Darn near knocked her out though. Probs for holding on and not crying though.
Three examples I dont like guns.
1. Scott Stevens
2. Steve Cooley
3. Columbine (whack jobs shouldnt have access or sold guns)
But I do believe in the right to bear arms. Its your right and your entitled to it.

I can't blame guns for suicide !! If someone wants to die, they will find a way. Should we ban ropes , (hanging), & razor blades ??
Did you check the sites I posted ??? The site I posted for gun related murders , is an FBI , US DEPT of Justice site.
One of your 'sources' backs up my numbers. Here is a quote from your link:

I get your point about suicide (and I agree that it is scary that the number is so high.)...however, how many of those 16,869 people would have actually gone through with suicide without a gun? Sure, many would have found other ways...but I'm sure many would not. Besides, how many plan to commit suicide by popping pills or using razor blades and then change their mind and call for help. You can't change your mind when you blow your head off.
Go ahead and throw out those suicide numbers, but you also need to add in the accidents which probably add an average of another 1,000.
Now, do as many people use guns on a regular basis as drive cars? drink? If you compared the number of deaths to actual use, I'm sure that you will see that stasticially more people die from guns per use than driving or alcohol.
If I am washing my car, it is not going to kill anyone. If I am cleaning my gun, there is a chance it could kill someone. My brother-in-law was cleaning his and didn't realize there was a bullet still in it. He now has a small hole in his roof. Luckily, no one got hurt.

Alot of it is society. I think people would feel much safer around guns if the idiots we have in this country didn't make things look bad for the responsible people who carry guns. The US leads the world in deaths from guns. Very scary. Why is that? I'm not exactly sure, but I would feel alot better with numbers that are more similiar to Europe (about 1/3 less).

If you are NEGLIGENTLY washing your car, ( ie. forget to put it in park ), you could kill someone. If you pull the car in the garage, and forget to shut it off, you could kill your whole family.
NEGLIGENCE with ANYTHING could be deadly.
As for the people that use guns for suicide: Be happy they chose themselves , and not someone else. People also use cars for suicde ! Saw a guys pull on the RR tracks and stop in front of a train when I was in my late teens. Death ruled a SUICIDE !!

I think you need to find the number of gun owners per capita. I would think that the US leads the world in gun possessions, which would make all related numbers higher.

Ask Woody how tough it would be for any competent person's gun to go off while cleaning . ZERO CHANCE !!!

So do people have to be competent in order to buy a gun?
I don't think that is one of the requirements.

They have the mandatory background check, and waiting period. But ,.........I thought in a very recent case, that a shooter, ( perhaps the VT kid), had been to a shrink or had some mental illness, and he bought a gun.
I am ALL FOR very tough guidelines for issuing guns. However, it will not stop criminals from having them.
Cocaine & pot are illegal too, but everyday in the paper, half a dozen people get caught with them !!
If they OUTLAW guns, only the OUTLAWS will have them !!!
PS. The Ohio CCW classes, training and testing that are mandatory to receive a license, are very good. Perhaps you should HAVE to take these same courses just to buy a gun. Maybe that would cut down on accidents.

I completely agree with everything you said. I am all for tougher guidelines as well. I don't know what the answer is as far as the VT guy with the mental illness. Seems to me that the rights of others (potential victims) would outweigh the privacy rights of the person with the mental illness (potential shooter). At least it could possibly help with those huge suicide numbers you mentioned.
I think that taking classes to get a gun would be a wonderful idea. You have to take classes and practice driving with an experienced driver to be able to drive a car. Why not have classes and practice shooting/handling guns with someone experienced before being able to get your own gun?

I, also, am a member of the NRA and own a handgun; I'm on a waiting list to take the required safety course at the pistol club so I can get my CCW permit.
Laws do not stop criminal behavior. As was posted above; it's against the law to smoke pot & drive drunk, but lots of people do it every frikkin day.
The best thing to stop to a "bad guy" with a gun is a "good guy" with a gun.
