Top 10 high school and amateur sports stories of 2007, as voted on by The Repository sports staff:

1, Behind 7-foot center Kosta Koufos, the GlenOak boys basketball team reaches the Division I state final four.

2, The Louisville football team plays in its first state title game, losing 31-25 to Cincinnati Anderson.

3, Fresh off a wrist injury that cost him nine games, Perry junior basketball standout Kenny Frease is struck by Central Catholic’s Cory Berry after a whistle, a blow that breaks two bones in Frease’s eye socket. Police investigated the matter, but no charges were filed.

4, Frease’s injuries cause him to miss two GlenOak-Perry basketball matchups. The third time is the charm as a sold-out Canton Memorial Civic Center watches Koufos and GlenOak beat Frease’s Panthers, 45-28, in a Division I district final featuring two 7-footers.

5, Ten years after leading McKinley to a state football title, Thom McDaniels returns to Stark County to coach the Jackson Polar Bears.

6, Brian Cross leaves as McKinley’s football coach after five seasons, accepting the same position at Olentangy Orange, a new high school in the Columbus area.

7, The Jackson boys soccer team loses in a regional final but is re-instated when it is ruled Mentor used ineligible players. The Polar Bears advance to the state title game, losing 2-1 to Hilliard Davidson.

8, Northwest goes 10-0 in the regular season, winning the Division III high school football poll title.

9, The David Family Foundation donates $4 million to fund the D.R.E.A.M. project at Washington High School. The training center will include an 80,000-square-foot indoor practice facility and physical therapy labs.

10, The St. Thomas Aquinas boys cross country team dominates the Division III field at the state championships, repeating as Ohio title winners.
