Brittany Baker, daughter of Seeker, is one of the candidates.

...The school’s annual Rose Assembly introduced the 24 candidates – 12 boys and 12 girls – for the Miss Massillonian and Outstanding Senior Boy awards. Each of the finalists for the Outstanding Senior Boy award were announced by master of ceremonies Matt Creamer. As each candidate was announced, the underclassmen would applaud and cheer....

Congrats ... you're all outstanding!!!

From the Massillon City School's website and writer Lori Williams:

Washington High's process for announcing 12 male seniors as candidates for Outstanding Senior Boy and a dozen female seniors as contenders for the title of Miss Massillonian 2008 unfolded Friday at the school's annual Rose Assembly. As each boy's name was called, he was handed the name of a female candidate, and set off in the gymnasium crowd to present her with a rose. This year's candidates are: First row, from left - Natalie Haynam, Hilary Fichter, Jennifer McCune, Emilee Luckring, Brittany Baker, Jaclyn Geier; second row - Jessica Stuck, Lauren Louive, Vanessa Shertzer, Chelsea Halter, Kristen Clapper, Natasha Price; third row - Matt Lafferty, Thomas Paul, Luther Copeland, Tim Larke, Daniel Coffey, Cody Miller; back row - Cody Hughes, Matt Buttacavoli, Eric Tharp, Josh Scott, Denis Vargas and Matt Skelly.
The candidates are selected based on a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher, an attendance record with less than 24 absences and 10 tardies in four years, extracurricular participation, a staff/teacher evaluation, a popular vote of the senior class and an impromptu essay.
Miss Massillon and Outstanding Senior Boy 2008 will be announced at a formal assembly set for Jan. 18.

Uh oh. I wonder if MTigers006 is going to go off on a tirade because the tradition of Mr. Harding emceeing the ceremony has been changed. Yet ANOTHER example of this massive conspiracy against Massillon tradition.

By the way, congratulations to all the young men and women. You make your city proud.

i'm sure he knows someone important who has assured him that no school levy will ever be passed because of this travesty. LOL.

Miss Massillonian, Outstanding Senior Boy Candidates Put on the Ritz
01/18/2008

Dan Coffey knows how to think on his feet.

When Matt Creamer, emcee of the annual Miss Massillonian/Outstanding Senior Boy formal assembly, quipped that on stage was “coffee with cream(er),” Coffey shot back an espresso-strength comeback.

“I take my coffee black,” he deadpanned as the third Coffey sibling to suffer the joke at the annual competition.

In answering one of the two questions each of the 24 candidates select from a basket, Coffey went on to denounce the need for fast food chains in schools, citing the current epidemic of teenage obesity. Let them eat fruits and vegetables, he said.

Luther Copeland put one slip of paper back in the basket, handed the other to Creamer: Is this country ready to elect a woman president? Creamer read.

“It’s not a matter of if this country is ready,” Copeland said, “but if this country will.”

Lauren Louive admitted to being the kind of kid who “plays well with others” rather than “runs with scissors” while Tim Larke said he’d like to move back to Massillon after completing his education as an architect.

“I think I could add to the landscape,” he said. “Massillon offers a lot. Great things are happening here.”

Eric Tharp gave a loving shout-out to his mom before describing the holiday he would create. In fact, he told the audience and judges, he and a friend already celebrate June 3 as Cheese Whiz Day.

Miss Massillonian has been a top honor at the school for 68 years; Outstanding Senior Boy for the past 53 years.

In this year’s competition four first cousins are vying for the top spots: Luther Copeland, Emilee Luckring, Kristen Clapper and Hilary Fichter.

The formal assembly which includes the impromptu responses is one part of the rigorous competition. Candidates also are selected based on a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher, an attendance record with fewer than 24 absences and 10 tardies in four years, extracurricular participation, a staff/teacher evaluation, a popular vote of the senior class and an essay.

Formal assembly judges were: Janice Egan-Brenner, Frank Forchione, Andrea Scassa, Lise Berquist and Devon Jordan.

Donations were provided by Tuxedo Junction, Denise Bennett Photography, WHS teleproductions, Carmola Flowers and The Russell House.

The 2008 candidates are: Natalie Haynam, Hilary Fichter, Jennifer McCune, Emilee Luckring, Brittany Baker, Jaclyn Geier; Jessica Stuck, Lauren Louive, Vanessa Shertzer, Chelsea Halter, Kristen Clapper, Natasha Price; Matt Lafferty, Thomas Paul, Luther Copeland, Tim Larke, Daniel Coffey, Cody Miller; Cody Hughes, Matt Buttacavoli, Eric Tharp, Josh Scott, Denis Vargas and Matt Skelly.

I graduated with the mother of one of the candidates and she sent me a partial video yesterday of the formal assembly. WOW! They all looked so grown-up and dapper in their formal attire. What a great bunch. I imagine it will be a tough call at the end, but each one has much to be proud of (parents, too!).
