HBO documentary airing Tuesday chronicles famed Ohio State-Michigan rivalry

In 1968, with the Ohio State University Buckeyes lead ing their bitter rivals, the Michigan Wolverines, by 36 points in the second half, famed OSU coach Woody Hayes tried to beat a dead Wolverine.

He ordered his team, after a touchdown, to go for a two-point conversion rather than kicking for one.

He was piling on, every point another poison dart in the bad-blood rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan.
Why go for two with such a comfortable lead, Hayes was asked afterward.

"Because they wouldn't let me go for three," he replied.

That was the best thing Wayne Woodrow Hayes ever said.

Ohio State is definitely vulnerable after their loss to Illinois.

Michigan 35, Ohio State 7. Wolverines will leave their heart and soul on the field and win their first Big Ten title since 2004.

You have to be freaking kidding me. I don't know that OSU will win for 100% sure, but I don't think it will be a blow out either way.

Woody was a great man with many sides to his personality and character. I always felt this wasn't one of his greatest moments. He was being a bully which he had a propensity for doing.

I was talking to Ron Johnson who was the star RB for UM that year and he is still bitter about the play and comment.

One thing most don't think of - that comment was the driving force that Bo kept emphasizing all year long in '69. It very well cost Woody another NC with his "greatest team."

Ohio State is Vulnerable because they lost 1 game to Illinois? What about Michigans 3 losses, including last week. Ohio State is just gonna be ticked and dominate Michigan.

Dominate Michigan?? When is the last game either team dominated the other?

warren1st,

2003: Michigan dominated Ohio State en route to a wire-to-wire 35-21 win. Michigan scored 14 points off turnovers that day.

2004: Ohio State wins 37-21. 27 Buckeye points prove to be too much for Michigan. Braylon Jamel Edwards drop of a Chad Henne pass on 4th and 1 proves to be the difference late in the game. Michigan led 14-7 only to fall behind 34-14 after three. Michigan was buried and never recovered.

I agree...which is why I disagree with Keno's 35 to 7 prediction.

I do worry that OSU was so focused on a national championship that maybe with the loss last week and the probability of that goal about zero, maybe they let the season slip away. Where as Michigan at least can somewhat salvage their season after such a poor start. They have been working since that loss to Oregon on the goal of winning the Big Ten.

Unfortunately I registered for a conference from 9-1 or 2 that day. I will have to record it and head straight home to watch it even though I know my friends down here will want to go to the sports bars afterwards to watch college football games. I want to be able to watch it from start to finish not knowing anything.
