I can tell you this, voting for my Mom (Pinkie Guillan) would be a great move.
She cares very much for this city. She has lived in the Massillon area for nearly 40 years. From living with my father on the West side, to living just outside the city where I now live, to chosing to move into the city and into the house she has chosen to live in until the day she dies.
Half of our family lives in the city, I live just outside the city but not too far to be annexed in the near future, so she has a stake beyond herself to worry about.
She is a college educated person, she is up on local matters, she is retired so she has the time to commit.
Not to mention that she has been to as many meetings in the last 2 years, if not more, than many of the current council people. So her interest in the city, and council, isn't a passing interest, or asked for by the request of anyone else but her own passion for it.
Having been the wife of a small business owner(My late father Terry Guillan), and now a small business owner herself, she knows what businesses are looking for in an area and can use that knowledge to help the administration and the other council people to make Massillon more attractive to those people that bring the jobs.
That budget problems can be better solved, and for long-term, with economic developement and not with tax rate increases. If you can increase the average wage of the people in the city, that will automatically bring up the city's revenue.
She is not to big to admit when she is wrong, however she will stand her ground when she knows she is right and help you to understand why. (this part I know from personal experience.)
That is why if I lived in the city that I would vote for Pinkie Guillan... that and she is my mom.
Plus she has really cool looking pink signs!
P.S. If there is something you don't like about me, blame my dad

Funny thing about the school board elections. I've had people tell me that I should not vote for Weinberg because he has ties to people who want to change the football program. But then, I've had other people tell me that I shouldn't vote for Weinberg because other candidates have ties to people who want to change the football program.
The only thing I can draw from this is that there are a lot of people who are trying to use the BOE to push a football agenda.

It's a funny thing about Ward 3 as well. The Republican candidate is running to support the mayor, who wants his fellow Democrat out for not being a rubber stamp.

Problem is that Walterhouse was a good councilperson in the past too. Plus he is well known just like Kathy. Is either a bad choice? Nope. I think Dale would do more for ward 3, and she is more of a city wide type councilperson, which I don't understand why she doesn't run citywide other than timing when she moved to Massillon a few years ago.
You are exactly right that it is odd, they seem to be opposite of their party affiliation locally, however that is to be expected of good council people, politics or party are more for the national/state level, when it gets down to the city level it is mostly meaningless, other than what "clique" some are part of.
I don't see at all why ANYONE would vote a straight ticket for a local election, it makes no sense.
Try to see the logic.
A person lives in Massillon, works at target as an assistant Manager. Hard worker and not quite middle class, but not quite poverty. Let's say they are a registered Democrat.
What candidate are they most like? Which candidate would likely share this person's views of city level needs and issues?
- A retired S.A.R.T.A. reservationist that has recently started a small business(Customer Service/Scheduling/Data entry position)
- A Gas Station Manager
- A practicing lawyer who is a full partner at their own practice.
- An Operations Manager. (upper level management)
?
However a republican may find themselves more in common locally with the democrat candidates.
By voting a straight ticket they may just be doing themselves an injustice.

I believe the BOE forum on MCTV channel 10 will run continuously throughout election day; Or perhaps you can get a copy from the WHS Telepro. department.
