View Full Version : Ohio State vs. Michigan....RECRUITING!

I did not want to turn this thread into a discussion about JT (he should choose which school is the best fit for him), but I wanted to get a discussion going about which school a top recruit should choose and why. All of us are incredibly biased toward one school or another, but I am going to ask for the sake of the thread that when you add to the thread you bring some facts with you instead of the usual OSU/UM sucks stuff (we all know UM sucks anyway....j/k).
So, if you are a RB or CB being recruited by both schools like JT is, which do you choose and why?

Ohio State. Reason? To piss the Pittsburg Playboy off!! Seriously, OSU makes it a habit of recruiting the top offensive line talent they can. They totally make sure the running game is intact before the season starts. Buckeye offense begins and ends with the running game.

To be honest with you, I think Michigan traditionally has better lines than Ohio State. In the last decade I think Michigan has put more lineman in the NFL than Ohio State....not a huge amount more, but I think they have the edge.
I think it's no question that Ohio State has had better Linebackers and DB's. We are loaded year in and year out on D and IMO that's been the difference in The Game.

BUT, I think OSU concentrates more on the running game whereas Lloyd the Great thinks he can out-fancy teams with those beanpole wide receivers and all the other crap he tries. OSU just brings it and says here we are, try and stop us.

Surprise! Surprise!! I would tell him to go to Michigan!
Here is my reasoning:
First, Michigan is hurting for good RBs. OSU is loaded.
Secondly, my former doctor who received his Bachelor's and Doctor of Medicine from OSU has always said he loves to watch the Michigan line in action for their blocking techniques, etc.
Whether you want to hear this or not, a degree from the University of Michigan is more prestigious than one from OSU throughout the country.
CarlE, btw, by your definition, it sounds like Ginn and Robiske should have gone to Michigan. I'll betcha you'd love to have Manningham wearing scarlet and gray!  Frankly, I wish he would concentrate on the passing game a little more when you have a talent like MM.

Not to shoot holes in your theory, but this link should provide info to prove otherwise

Three reasons why any RB should choose TOSU over scUM
2. Michael Brewster (also ranked as #8 recruit among ALL players at ALL positions!)
10. JB Shugarts
13. Mike Adams
The numbers before their names are their rank among ALL OL (tackles)in the USA. Three of the top 15 are coming to TOSU next year!!!!!
These guys are huge, fast, and athletic. If you want to see an athletic, and powerful line, look at OSU. Did you see Alex Boone jump over Brian Hartline in the endzone Saturday after the TD?? 6'8' 318 lbs OL and he is that athletic??? I have a hard time believing that scUM routinely recruits better OL talent.
BTW, Michigan top OL recruit is #12, and second is #24........

Not too shabby. Considering kids change, attitudes change, etc., I think it's great that UM has 2 of the top 24 OL in the country.

Not bad at all.......... Just not as good as 3 of the top 13! It also looks like TOSU has the inside track on #1 overall and QB Terrelle Pryor, but nothing set in stone yet.....
http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=43028&Sport=1
Apparently he likes TOSU, and said he didn't want to attend the PSU/OSU game this week, at PSU's invitation, because it would be disrespectful to TOSU. He is from Pa, and still may end up there, but I like our chances!
(notice who is NOT on his list! Another reason for a top flight RB to pick TOSU over scUM)

Well, yeah, who would want to go to UM with Ryan Mallett firmly in place the next 3 years? 'Course, I always feel that if you think you're good enough........
There can be NO denying that Jim Tressel has done a marvelous job in recruiting. Winning begets winning.

No disrespect to Mr Mallett, but I doubt that Mr Pryor is worried about beating him out. He hasn't exactly made anyone forget Michigan's last great QB.... you know, Jim Harbaugh, Rick leach, Robert Timberlake (OK I had to go to the internet for that last one!)
I think if he wanted to come there LLLLLLLLLLOYD and his staff would LOVE to have him!!

To be honost it is about who is there now, when can i get on the field, and what degree am i pursing in college. The reason I say that is both schools traditionally stay loaded at LB, RB, DB,WR, and olinemen. it's about timing and who is in your spot. Both schools rank in top 5 in putting players in the NFL---degree and playing time are the keys and the love the team always plays a role in the decision.

Me...I would choose Michigan largely because of their tradition over the years. Who wouldn't want to play for a program that boasted a man named Schembechler?

Isn't OSU better at producing cb than michigan? Perhaps JT will like that aspect.
I think many kids would look at what possible position they will be playing in college and see who is on the depth chart in front of them that they would have to beat out.

All this talk about the running game and playing running back, my understanding was EVERYBODY is looking at him as a Cornerback.
That being said its a toss up, who has the most need and where do you feel you fit in best.
Michigan is about to have a coaching change soon I think we would all agree, that would be my only worry going to UM right now.

You were supposed to give me your answer and why...and the why was supposed to have facts to back it up. So, if you would choose Michigan over Ohio State because of tradition, what makes Michigan's tradition better than Ohio State?

They both have great traditions. Again, using my dad as the example since he went to both schools, he would probably say Michigan by a tad because their tradition goes back further. However, the Bucks are making up for lost ground presently!
Carmen Ohio....The Victors....Across The Field....Let's Go Blue....Buckeye Battle Cry......Woody Hayes....Bo ........Fielding H. Yost....Tress....The 'shoe....The Big House.....Willie Heston.....Chic Harley.....Tom Harmon.....Wes Fesler.......Hopalong Cassady.....Ron Kramer....Archie Griffin.....Rick Leach.....Wow!!!! How can one be picked over the other?

It depends what his major will be OSU has certain programs which are better then Mich, while Michigan has some programs that OSU are deficent in I'd say Michigan because my farther got his chemical enginering degree from their. JT may surprise us all and not go to either school. He may end up in the sec.

I'll argue that one in a friendly manner with you; however, a degree from ANY of the Big-10 conference schools is very highly recognized and regarded across the country. My OSU - BA education was vastly superior to what I got in graduate study at Auburn.
On the other hand.... I wouldn't give a frikkkin' NICKLE for a diploma that said "Notre Dame" on it.

Smitty - I agree that it is all subjective BS that goes into the "rating" of colleges and universities but UM has historically rated with the elite. In fact, I think their staure is taking a little hit the last 10 years. That said, they now have the "top rated" business school in the country.......and to think I was accepted for my MBA there!! lol!!
My best friend is a retired judge who received his law degree from Michigan. He felt he had better profs at a tiny liberal arts college where he got his bachelor's.

Here's a thought for all of you. How many Massillon boys have played at OSU?
NONE
JT should go to MEEEEEEEEEEEEchigan. He has a great opportunity there to pay as a freshman.
