i'm glad he rejected them. i was hoping he'd do so. whether you love the yankees or hate them, torre has been a classy guy. everything that he's had to put up with was ridiculous.....you have your manager telling everyone you're gone if you lose the series, wake up every day to read about how your boss still hasn't decided what to do with you, then hear how your boss may bring you back if you take a pay cut.
george should make the entire team take a pay cut.

You too Joe? Not defending any of them a-hole front office types but it was fair - IMO. Makes JT look more like any other athlete - all about the money. Do well and get the big bonuses, fat raises, and all the perks & praises, but it dont work the other way I guess.

Are you kidding me? They were giving him about a 25% pay cut, a one-year contract with heavy performance bonuses attached to it. I don't see any player EVER getting that proposed to them. All he was asking for is what was fair. Do the managers that DON'T make the play-offs all get 25% of their pay reduced the following year? I don't think so.

Call it what it is - the Yankees didn't want him back. They made him an offer that they knew he wouldn't accept. They're hoping to take the edge off the PR fallout by saying that they offered him $5 million plus incentives.
You might also note that at $5 million, he would still be the highest paid manager in baseball by far. #2 is Lou Piniella at $3.5 million. Torre made more than twice as much this year.
In that light, it is a little hard to support the position that Torre didn't have an inflated sense of self-worth.

I don't think so. I do agree that it is a way to make sure both get positive PR. Torre didn't back down from his number, and the Yankees made something they considered fair and equitable. In the end, it's the best scenario possible for them to walk away from each other.

if i were torre, i would take a position as manager with another team for just a buck before i would EVER work for steinbrenner/ yankees at any price he was offering me
i probably would have walked off the job the very day he made that comment...let him find another patsy to kick around...
i am so vvvvvverrrrrrrry glad the yankees got beat by cleveland...and i would dearly love to see the indians go all the way, just to rub it in steinbrenner's face...show him that the almight buck isn't what guarantees you a pennant...
i am so very sure that the announcement had barely hit the air waves before the offers were ringing his phone off the hook...
too bad the cincy reds didn't wait few days...might have gotten a really good manager...

shortbev - Be careful what ya say about King George. He's a HUGE supporter of OSU football and has one of THE 4 super-duper luxury suites in the 'shoe.
Why do you think he signed Drew Henson a few years ago and told him to forget his senior year at Michigan?
Now, if you tell me he's a good guy, I'll gag for sure.

Agreed - w/ the last few posts. I was too harsh. Even though I think he was paid rediculous money, ALL the Yankees are, and NONE would take a cut. I'll reserve judgement on all that. The Yanks simply weren't going to pay him "back to back champs money" anymore, after 3 1 & dones, and I think this allowed JT to keep his pride & dignity. I also agee w/ the notion he reject the offer even if they did match his salary. It was time.

...Are they too soft or too green? Whatever the case, Hank and Hal have blown their transition move from the kiddie table. Ten days after the Yankees’ season ended, holed up in Tampa with IHOP leftovers and Randy Levine this week, stepping lightly around their aging patriarch, Hank and Hal helped devise this ham-handed strategy: Let’s discount Joe Torre’s dignity....

I think this is interesting. Yes, these two are nitwits but somehow the one person I feel is responsible for all of this debacle never seems to get mentioned as "at risk". Brian Cashman is a freaking buffoon who has brought in a bunch of over-the-hill, overpaid egomaniacs that haven't done squat for the Yankees. And now the team will be decimated and he will be the brainchild behind all the personnel moves.
Hell, I think Torre was smart as ever to get out now. Incentive-laden contract? With what the Yankees will wind up with next year? No freaking thanks, boys.

The key here is the 1 year contract---who wants to perform with bloulders over your head---make to the world series next year or bye-bye! I would not accept a 1 year deal with anyone for my services and Torre will mangage a winner again real soon!

I agree. When you have a $220 million payroll and get dusted by the Indians ($61 million) payroll in the first round, the problems are deeper than the manager. An incentive-laden contract is what you offer a new manager. Torre has shown he knows how to manage and lead a team to the postseason. Obiewan's point is correct. They made him an offer they knew he would refuse.
