After reading this mornings headline on the front page, I about dropped over. As a 30 year Broadcast Journalist, I will say that the headline using the word 'masterbate' was; to say the least inappropriate. This headline could have been rewritten in several different ways with the actual act being used in the smaller print part of the story. As pathetic and miserable as this story was, I feel the editors actually magnified it. IMHO this headline compromized (sp) the innocence of our younger readers..........embarrassing :sour:

That was my first reaction too. TMI……we do not need this kind of information as a headline right on the front page.
Come on….have some common sense.

As my little boy was eating his bowl of Wheaties, I went and got the
paper on the porch. I opened it up and my son saw the headline.
He said "Dad, whats masturbate mean?".
Hey Inde, show some class, and in the meantime go

Perhaps The Inde should see if someone over there can teach them how to use some journalism skills so they can learn how to come up with and print a less offensive headline.
I can only imagine how any seniors who got their papers this morning reacted when they saw the Enquirer-like headlines as they gathered to have morning coffee with their friends or spouses:doh:

The headline was for shock value, they think it will sell more papers.

I don't see what the problem is here. Masturbate is the correct term, not slang. Is the problem because it was in a headline? It was an accurate use of a clinical term. The story itself is shocking - no way to report it any other way.

Terrible comparison. Masturbate is a clinical term, your example is guttural slang. And here's a hint - they're in business to sell papers and use eye-catching headlines to do so.
What other words offend your sensitivity :sad2: ? Flatulence? Uterus? Rectum?
Listen - the whole story is perverted. There's no pretty side to the report. Journalistic integrity is getting the story factually correct. They did their job.

It’s not journalistic integrity -- it’s sensationalism.
It’s one thing to report a story on the inside of the paper with some discretion. It’s a whole other thing to splash it on the front page to try sell papers or for whatever reason.
Well, it didn’t work with me. I called and had yesterday’s paper removed from my bill.
End of story.

That; dude is an insult to the community. The Independent has a responsibility to not only serve the community, but to respect its readers with good judgement. Hey m2m, tell me when you're going to sit down with your 10 year old son or daughter and explain to them what the word 'masterbate' means..let me know how that goes .. ok? :wall:

Well this is a little hypocritical....coming from the guy who proclaimed in another post that women have no place in sports. 30 years in broadcast journalism? Please review your vita, so we have an understanding of the credibility you bring in criticizing a working journalist.
A journalist with 30 years of experience would surely have seen other headlines much more concerning or sensational over the years in newspapers like the NY Times, Wash Post, etc. It is laughable that a silly headline like this in a mediocre at best small town newspaper brought such offense to someone of your background who should have "seen it all" over the years....Maybe there's a little exaggeration or mis-representation of your experience??:scratchchin:

I'd just like to see a little more consistency in your positive and community caring persona. It's too bad you are sticking with your position that women do not belong in sports. Just seems like you are contridicting yourself, which leads to a decreased level of credibility. It's also very offensive and demeaning to the many women and high school girls who post and lurk on MP.com. That's all I'm saying.

The word your looking for here is "foolhardy", not "fullhearty". The former means "daring without judgment; speaking or acting boldly without reason". The latter is not even a word. I know as a credible communicator you would want to get it right.
And here's a thought: it's 2007 - women now have every right to try for and attain any job available. Your taking offense with common words and women's rights is what hurts your credibility most of all.
