Randy Coutor quits UFC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Confirmed.....

Quote:
Randy Couture (Pictures), the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and one of mixed martial arts most revered fighters, notified the UFC via fax from South Africa at 11 o'clock Thursday morning that he has chosen to resign from the UFC, "The Natural" confirmed with Sherdog.com.

"I sent the letter of resignation to the UFC today, resigning not only from my position in the company as a commentator and as an ambassador, but also as the heavyweight champion," Couture said over the phone from South Africa, where he is currently filming a movie.

"The motivation for the decision is two-fold," he continued. "I know Fedor (Emelianenko) just signed with another organization and that's the only real fight that makes sense for me at 44 years old as the heavyweight champion of the UFC. That's the fight I wanted and if that can't happen it doesn't make sense for me to compete with all these other guys. And then obviously that's not going to happen now. And, two, I'm tired of being taken advantage of, played as the nice guy and basically swimming against the current with the management of the UFC. I have a lot of other things going on in my life that I'm doing just fine with. I don't need the problems. I don't feel like I get the respect I deserve from the organization, and that's motivation No. 2 for the letter of resignation that was sent today."

Couture (16-8) is the only fighter in UFC history to hold belts in two weight divisions. The current UFC heavyweight champion, he recaptured the belt in March by coming out of retirement to out-point Tim Sylvia (Pictures). Couture defended the title in August, stopping challenger Gabriel Gonzaga (Pictures) in the third round.

The Sylvia win came after a year away from the sport after Couture suffered the second of two knockouts to then UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (Pictures). Couture won the first bout in the trilogy by capturing an interim UFC light heavyweight title in June of 2003, stopping Liddell in the third period.

Couture's ledger in the UFC reads like a who's who. "The Natural" first captured UFC heavyweight gold against Maurice Smith (Pictures) in 1997 before doing it for the third time against Sylvia in 2007.

A day after news broke that Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures), the widely regarded top heavyweight in the sport, had apparently declined to sign with the UFC, Couture submitted his resignation.

"I want that fight and would have waited if the fight was offered to me," Couture said. "Knowing what they offered him, I would have made demands to get paid equally or better than him as the champion. Whether or not those would have been met is another question."

Couture will have to wait nine months for his current UFC deal to lapse before he can go after Emelianenko. Over that span Couture said he will concentrate on acting, continuing to franchise his Xtreme Couture training facilities, as well as growing his Xtreme Couture clothing line.

His success outside the ring is proof of his success inside the Octagon. But Couture said it was a lack of respect by the UFC, in particular its president Dana White, that led him to resigning.

"I think the final straw for me was meeting with White and Lorenzo (Fertitta, UFC co-owner) where they claimed I was the No. 2 paid athlete in the organization, which I know is a bold-faced lie," Couture said. Polling other athletes, said Couture, he learned that his compensation -- some $250,000 a fight with pay-per-view bonuses, according to the Couture camp -- was nowhere near what other top UFC fighters were making.

"All us athletes are all pretty tightly intertwined," he said. "You hear what other guys were paid signing bonuses and what other guys were paid on the record and off the record with bonuses. I've heard Chuck's numbers. Tito's numbers. Hughes' numbers. Quinton's numbers. Cro Cop, Wanderlei. I heard what they were offering Fedor, and it's insulting."

Couture's rocky history with the Zuffa-owned UFC began in 2001.

"I think what set us off on the wrong foot was that my management [at the time] wasn't willing to give up ancillary rights across the board with no option for some sort of compensation," said Couture, alluding to a reason cited by Emelianenko's representatives as to why the Russian did not end up with the UFC. "All the other athletes at that time were signing those contracts. That created a lot of animosity and got me pulled out of the Carmen Electra campaigns to promote the athletes and the sport and the video game and all that stuff."

Beyond the money, both Couture and his wife Kim stressed Thursday's resignation from the UFC was about respect. It's a move "The Natural" acknowledged could have far-reaching effects.

"Certainly there's personal motivation for resigning and taking stand for myself," he said. "If it sets a precedence that down the road requires athletes to be treated better than that's icing on the cake."

Attempts to reach the UFC for comment went unreturned.

Perhaps you guys know nothing of the UFC. Don't confuse WWF with UFC.

As for thsi comment:...........There's this thing called humor..............

There was nothing remotely humorous about OW's response.

what makes over paid millionaires any more relevant than UFC? nothing other than history of watching them. when it comes down to it, most of us love sports for the competition and drama...and UFC provides that just as much as any other sport, its just not as well known. personally, i don't follow the UFC all that closely, but still give it respect for the sacrifice the competitors go through. most of them are probably better people than whats in the other professional sports.

Brock Lesnar just signed a huge big money deal with UFC so I assume that is why Randy decided to step away and thus "doesnt get the respect from UFC as an organization", as he said, that he thinks he deserves. He knows that they are going to build that company around Brock.

I'm sure it's important to all the people that compete in the UFC, and the millions that watch on PPV.

Maybe you should start watching it. You 'little guys' need to learn all the fight tactics that you can !!

Well, except for the fact that if one of them found you he would kick the ever-living hell out of you for making fun of his sport. Quite honestly, I've not watched 30 seconds of it, but I know they are bad-asses that take all kinds of punishment. I sure respect what they do. Two other comments:

TigerCoach, the day Andre' died, the world cried.
As far as monumental retirements, none, and I mean NONE will make me sadder than when Jenna Jamison retired from adult entertainment and had her breasts reduced. And did ANYBODY write or call to console me? Yes, just one (except for Jenna herself). Thanks, LTFT for consoling me in my time of need.

What exactly is a 'poser on a Harley' ??
You know, middle-age guys who get their identity from from a poorly designed piece of machinery. The ones who buy all of the Harley clothing and swag so they can inform everyone else of their affinity and get a little steet cred from a T-shirt. The ones who who consider themselves to be rugged individualists - along with a whole bunch of other guys who look and act exactly the same.

Those guys.

Nah, I mean the guys whose evolutionary development never made it above their necks.

Keep your eyes on the rear view mirror, and keep the doors locked !!
Unlike some of these biker boys, I'm always a little careful when there's a guy behind me.

Hey, be careful.

You know, I apologize for my remarks. For those that know me, I'm not an "in your face" kinda guy , unless really provoked. So, Obie Wan, I'm sorry.

However, you took a 'backhanded' jab at me , by calling me a harley 'poser'.

It clearly solved nothing for me to say what I did.

You obviously have little or no knowledge of me or Harleys. So, to help everyone involved, I will educate you.

YOU SAID:

My reply is:

I am a second generation Harley rider. My dad started riding bikes in the late 50's. He raced BSA's and Triumphs, and rode a Harley " HOG " when I was just a little tyke.

I started riding dirt bikes my Jr high days, and raced dirt bikes ( Yamaha YZ250J) after high school. I started riding street bikes ( illegally) at age 14. I started riding a Harley in my late 20's.

The reason a lot of guys begin riding Harleys in their late 30's and early 40's, is that they are not willing/able to part with the cash it takes to purchase a "toy" that you can only ride for a limited time in Ohio.

I have $28K invested in my Harley. Hardly a cheap hobby. Many wives' can't understand an investment of that magnitude, to see it stored for half the year. I got lucky. Mine loves it as much as I do.

Most of the guys that I ride/rode with are hard working blue collar guys that are very proud that they ride the American made Harley Davidson. I've ridden with all walks of life. From prominent lawyers & business owners, to janitors and disabled veterens. When these guys 'saddle up' on their Harleys, everyone is equal.

They all ride for the joy of it. The feeling of the wind in your face, and the beautiful countryside. They are PROUD to ride a bike that says MADE IN USA on it.

The bikers that I ride with , volunteer time and money every year by attending rides and ralleyes that benefit the less fortunate. From the MDA runs, to the "Toys for Tots" Christmas runs, to the "someones daughter is ill" runs, these guys always pull together for a worthy cause.

The Harleys that I have had were always good machines, and Harley has come a LONG way in the mechanical satisfaction of their customers.

I have many Harley coats , jackets , shirts , boots, etc. Some older that Seeker's kids. One of the neat novelties of Harley rider's is to collect Harley shirts from dealerships in various cities that they've traveled to.

I don't need any Harley gear to affirm my street cred. My last name carries enough.

So, instead of having a pissing contest with you, I thought that I would educate you about me & my Harley Davidson. I knew that when I began riding in my 20's, that one day I would be riding in my 40's. I hope that deasn't make me a 'poser' !!

There's no better feeling, than riding your Harley in the open raod, and looking over and seeing your Dad riding beside you. That is one of the highlights of my life.

So the next time you want to put the "blanket definition" for a Harley rider out there, be sure that you know all the facts.

Do these guys really look like 'posers' ??

Thought maybe after 2 days I'd get a "my bad" or "oops, I didn't know" from ObieWan. I purposely waited a couple of days, before revisiting this thread.

But I guess getting no response at all speaks larger volumes about OW.

DAWGH8R. I have watched the UFC since day one. I've always believed it to be one of the truest sports of all. Flexability ( Royce Gracie) Strength (Matt Hughes) Endurance, Heart, Dedication ( any and all of the top competitors in any weight class) I fear that while money has helped improve the quality of the athlete, money will ultimately destroy the sport. As you know, many of the rules have been changed for the sake of safety, and to make the sport more acceptabe to the general public. Some rules changes I am not in agreement with. I prefer the more technical fights, hence I would like to see some sort of uniform to be worn.
Pitting ANY WWF wrestler against ANY of the top 10 heavyweight UFC fighters in the Octagon would be criminal, but one I would pay to see for obvious reasons.

In defence of H-D. I ride an 01 Shriner White Electra Glide Ultra that my wife and I tour on. Our last trip this year was 6200 miles to Portland Or. and back. Would love to say more on these two subjects, but my fingers get a little sore from dragging my knuckles on the ground all the time.

Nice explanation Jay,

I never have been a Harley Fan and never really thought much of a bunch of the Harley riders out there, but you made me see them in an entirely different light....Not all Harley riders (or just motorcycle riders) are "posers" or or knuckle dragging Hell's Angels....There are a lot of genuinely good people all over the country riding...Both American and Metric Bikes.

Again, nice post!

... The ones who who consider themselves to be rugged individualists - along with a whole bunch of other guys who look and act exactly the same....

Out here (north-central Idaho, duh...) they have BIG trucks that get 8 mpg, deer rifles, a mostly "camo" wardrobe with a few plaid flannel shirts & Wrangler jeans....

Individualists.

Yup.

Damn right.
