They should do the original setup EVERY game. with the band the size it is now, why not?

As much as I like tradition and history, 20-30 band kids had to stand on the sideline for that show, as it's made for 64 members. Since we want the band to grow beyond the size it is now, I'm guessing that show will have to be reserved for special times.

When I was in band there were about 10-15 kids each week that did not get to march in pregame, which was fanfare-tigerrag-carryon back then. It was something you had to earn. Being that I transfered in, I did not know pregame, did not have a spot, and had to work hard to be better than someone who had been doing it for a year or more. When I made it later that year it was an honor that I earned with hard work. I wasn't cheated when I had to stand on the sidelines and watch, I was inspired and motivated.

I understand the concept of using alternates as a way of keeping the band sharp, and making it an honor to play, and earning your spot, and all. But your suggestion was to, every week, use a formation that has only 64 kids marching. If the band grows at all, you could very quickly have HALF of the kids sitting out. (That's if you had 128 marchers - not at all an unrealistic number in the next 5 years) That makes no sense to me. But it's most likely a moot point because if you consistently only marched 64 kids, the band won't grow with any significance. Who wants to work as hard as they do with only a 50% chance you'd get to actually march? 10-15 kids on the sideline on a regular basis - a good idea for every reason you stated. Even 20% of the band- or more... not such a good idea, in my opinion.

If you noticed the run length on the 64 piece unit is not long. After that they can have everyone else in a formation on the sideline and join for the rest of the show after that.

You don't think that having a large percentage of the band sit out a portion of the show every week - even if it's just one song - is a bit over the top? Do you honestly think that the parents/families of the half that sits would be ok with that? Have you considered the problems that the division of good half/bad half - as the kids would naturally think of themselves - might cause? And what about the Band alumni who never marched it - what about their memories and what was traditional to them? Can you see how this idea, once put into practice could lead to people resenting the 64 drill instead of finding it special and worth preserving? There's a great deal to consider before making that kind of change. Just my opinion.

You're wasting your breath.
Can't you tell he doesn't understand?

I don't think he was there last week to see the WONDERFUL show that was put on. His posts seem to be based on a misunderstanding of what took place.

Our current band director is a God send.
He has my full trust in his judgement as to how to build the program back up to be a kid, parent and CROWD pleaser!

what exactly don't I understand? Given that I was both in band and had to earn a spot?

In your post above you mentioned that it was PREGAME that was limited to qualifying kids.

The show last week was at HALFTIME.

Are you really suggesting that 30% or more of the band next year stand on the sidelines during the half-time show?

Plus, don't you live in the Perry district?
Go give their band some advice.
Mr. Neal does not need your help.

I really, really enjoyed the 64-piece George Red Bird replica. And, seeing the past members of the Bird bands. It was just fantastic.

It is always a special event when we put that drill on the field, but (IMO) to make it permanent, would definitely take the “specialness” out of it.

Personally, I would like to see the band grow in size and sound. And, Mr. Neal is always trying to incorporate different things from past bands and staying with tradition.

I know that the band has seen all the past bands that they have on film and have seen how each has “done their own thing” while still holding on to traditions.

The band needs to always move forward. Every Tiger Swing Band has to put forth new ideas and new traditions. They have put their own mark on the program. Old and new blended together.

Great job this year TSB and Mr. Neal -- ALWAYS KEEP THE SWING!!

just a word of wisdom.... does anyone in this forum think that if u dont live in the city limits of Massillon that you are not a real tiger fan or you should not be able to make comments?

There are so many Massillon fans that spread through out this country no matter if you live in perry township, canton, florida, or texas... We should be glad fans have imput because without that.. This tradition that was created would not be without all of the IDEAS and POINTS OF VIEW....

There is such a thing called a TRUE fan and also an obessive fan..

Someone stated that it wasnt right for kids to be standing on the sidelines for the shows.. DO you think its right that over 60 kids stand on the side lines on game nights for the football players too?

Think of it this way.. if you had 10 employees runnig your business and 4 made your customers run away what would you do? the best, the most motivated and hard working should be either on the team .. the band or in the business.... High school is set up for learning what the real world is like ...

The band did look really good last week and its nice to see the old tradtion because i feel many are forgetting what it was like .... Massillon is loosing many tradtions.. We cant even get TIG---- ERS going b4 the team runs out the tunnel anymore WHY??? wheres all the student body that use to FILL the stands...

WELL any ways ... its hard to believe theres only 2 more home games left
go tigers beat warren

Yes.

The "too many players on the field" penalty every play would be difficult to overcome.

Yes, I live in Perry. I also graduated from Washington High and am active alumni for the Tiger Swing Band.

YOU need to see a psychologist to address your anger issues. By reading your posts it is clear you need some help.

You may have misunderstood. No one stated that it wan't right for kids to be standing on the sidelines. A system of alternates is a good idea that keeps the band sharp. The idea of a large percentage of kids on the sidelines for at least part of evey show, however, was what was being challenged. You were one of the people at the beginning of the year who made at least one comment on the size of the band (if am I remembering correctly - if not, disregard the rest of the sentence) so it surprises me to see you defending the "only march 64 kids every game" idea. And, comparing football, where you are only permitted to have 11 players on the field, to band, where you'd like to 185 on the field, doesn't quite work - the whole apples to oranges thing.

I will say, on a personal note, flaboi7, that I do very much appreciate the effort you have made to make your posts more readable and less negative. I'd like to take this opportunity to appologize for the negativity that I directed at you early on. We are all on the same side here.

hi Katshack.. thank you for the nice comments... i have made comments reguarding the size of the band however, i lean from side to side on the issue of having alternates. I sit on the visitor side every game and i watched many band players not playing during pregame and they are not marching but running. It doesnt look good when a select few are doing the chair step while others are running. Its actually kinda funny. But i give these kids credit because band is not easy at all.. Many people dont realize just how hard it can be at times.

The band has made many positive changes this year, however after watching the Warren band AND majorettes, they continue to keep the OLD SCHOOL band look. There knees are up along with the majorettes--- Our Drum major scoots on the field and not chair step like it should be...

I am def. looking foward to next years band.. Hopefully we can obtain more brass players so our sound is lounder.. Its is really hard to hear the band at times honestly even while they are in the stands playing the fight song...I alos hope our numbers conitnue to rise. I heard many warren fans wondering why we have gotten so small over the last few years.

I also want to apologize if i may have made some negative comments towards the band. While i ALWAYS defend this band toward out siders i think within the group you have to always have the bar raised.. thats how you continue to be " The Greatest Show in High School Football" right?

we just are loosing that swager a bit and i hope we can rekindle it.

Hope We have a packed house sat. after noon against westen hills.... GO TIGERS BEAT THE HILLS
!!!!!!!!!
