What is going on with these three teams as Massillon is 3-4 and Warren is 3-4 and McKinley is 2-5 because of the ineligble player or they would also be 3-4. The old power houses from the All American conference and they are all struggling and even having trouble getting across the 50 yard line. How many losing seasons in the last 10 years. ? Does anybody know what the enrollment numbers of each school was 10 years ago and what they are now? GO TIGERS BEAT WARREN

Massillon would lead the series of losing seasons in the last 10 years!

I was thinking about this same thing over the weekend. The only thing I can attribute it to is the demographic shift. The suburbs of Cleveland (Mentor, Solon, Parma, Strongsville, Brunswick) have grown in population, while the old steel mill towns of Massillon, Canton, Youngstown & Warren have lost population and/or have grown older with no new kids populating the schools. Look at who the Tigers have lost to this year, Mentor, Solon, Parma Normandy, and Iggy. Makes sense.

It does make sense and certainly gives one something to think about. But I still like to hold onto hope for the future. Things are always in a state of change, it's inevitable, but that can go either way.

TigerFlame,

Warren Harding High School has 1,510 students enrolled.
Canton McKinley has 2,310 students enrolled.
Massillon has 1,182 students enrolled.

From previous pressguides (basketball) obtained.

I have metioned this before, but in the past, the Tigers could rely on a good number of rural kids. Many, many outstanding players came from these areas and would now be at Tuslaw, Perry and Jackson. What a powerhouse there would be if these could combine. WOW. But, alas, it is what it is.

I'm guessing that Warren must have moved 9th-grade students into the building in 1997.

OB - Long before that. My sons graduated in '82 and '86 and both went 4 years to Warren Harding. I'd guess that the high schools started going 9-12 in the '70s.

Something must have happened in 1997, because I can't believe that they would have picked up 500 kids over the summer. Did you have somebody cooking the books up there?

TigerCoach - I think you totally nailed it. These "old" teams can come up with some outstanding talent once in a while but the population shift is out of these once proud football towns. One thing though is the newbies don't have the organizations and enthusiasm behind them like the traditional schools. Look how gung ho you Massillon fans are. I sat in the Mentor section twice at Massillon and they are good fans but it felt more like a baseball game.

That's when the Superintendent finally figured out that if you report all "home schooled" students as their enrollment, they could still get the $5500 per student from the state. LOL!

I wouldn't say that all 3 schools are on the way out. Each of them has played in a Div. I state title game (along with numerous deep runs in the playoffs) this decade.

At the same time, however, it used to be that 2 or all 3 would be "on" most every year.

I would like to thank everyone for the information and input on this topic. I knew that Massillon was the smallest in numbers and I wanted to see where Warren and McKinley had fallen in numbers. The Tigers had 3 losing seasons in this period with 4-6 records in 1998-2003-2004 . Does anybody have the losing seasons for Warren and McKinley and their record for those years? GO TIGERs BEAT WARREN

Tiger Flame, it is weird to say the least. We have a population shift right now to more affluent areas or progressive towns. Add in other sports that coincide with football that gives students options, plus public schools go thru slumps that we hope will be temporary, even if these slumps may last a couple of years longer than usual due to the population shifting elsewhere.
Right now the Raiders field 80 sophomores on the varsity team. 15 juniors and 5 seniors. We should be better over the next 3 years--caution "should be". Don't want to make plans for the future--want to see proof first. Hype won't do it, we will see what the Raiders are made of in their tests against Massillon, Iggy, Eds, Mentor etc during the up-coming seasons. Right now I would say the Raiders problem is youth, inexperience and new coaching staff to varsity play. These 3 things at once spell rebuilding year. I still love my Raiders though! See ya Friday night Tigers!! Can't wait to see your band!

Thanks Big Fan Van on McKinleys record and I see that the bulldogs also have had 3 losing seasons in the last ten years with a 3-6 record in 2000 and 3-7 in 02 and 03. They also will have a losing season this year unless they win the rest of their games. Does anyone have Warrens records the last ten years ? GO TIGERS BEAT WARREN

We need jobs to influence all the people who grew up in Massillon, Canton, Warren, etc,... to come home with their kids!! We have way to many kids playing for schools throughout Ohio because families cannot afford to live in these steel towns making $7 to $10 bucks an hour!!

It is 3 kids starting in my Ravens organization right now who were 5th and 6th graders in Massillon two years ago(Columbus has no jr. high football). I know a 7th grader who is 6' 2" 240lbs tackle/DE right now living in Cincinnati from Massillon because his father cannot work in town--- he will go to Colerain. Jobs equals students!!!!!

Nice thread you guys! It helps put some things in perspective out here, having placed foot in Massillon only a few days out of the last few years. Things have clearly been in decline based on those enrollment numbers alone, but you still can't beat the tradition.

I look at the stadiums and the facilities of the top high school programs around here and they'll never attain what we've seen in a hundred years. The glory days of the All-American Conference may have been the best years ever in high school football anywhere, and we've still seen some good stuff from WGH, McK Senior and Massillon Washington High since then.

Carry-On Massillon!

The Future- thanks for the records of Warren and they only had one losing season in the last 10 years in 2005 with a 3-7. Warren has done better at not having losing seasons compared to Massillon and McKinley. So go Tigers and BEAT WARREN
