...The experimental approach could replace local anesthetics used to suppress the pangs of childbirth, stop toothaches during root canals or relieve chronic soreness or itch, researchers said. It may even reduce the need for knock-out general anesthesia in surgery, they said....

some of this is old news to me...my husband has been a huge proponent of putting "hot stuff" on everything he eats...claims that it has helped with his blood pressure, and even his diabetes...
so, if you want to cut out the middle man (aka the shot)...just give my husband a call
even as we speak, he is stinking up my house with his concoctions
he loves his peppers...his motto is "if your nose ain't running and your eyes ain't watering...it's not hot enough"
he has gotten into growing and canning his own hot pepper dishes...
he has a mild salsa...a "hot" salsa...a peach jalepeno jelly, a apricot jalepeno jelly...a mild relish and a "hot" relish (the last two are particularly good in dishes like chili...some guy from his work used the hot stuff...and won 1st prize in a chili cookoff)
told him two things
sell that stuff because i want a special sewing machine for Christmas
and
that this could be his "retirement" job
taking orders...

They've been experimenting with capsaicin for some time now. My wife has some muscle rub from Arbonne that I tried on my sore shoulder about a year ago. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking my shoulder and back were on fire. I went to the bathroom and tried to wipe it off with a wet rag, which apparently isn't the right thing to do because water reactivates the stuff. I was ready to head down to the office and shoot myself up with lidocaine.
If it ever comes to market I can tell patients I'm going to give them a shot of Tabasco before their root canal. I'm sure they'll like that much better. Maybe they can even make some pepper- flavored topical anesthetic.

LOL! Now you tell me! I just went through some intensive dental work in order to rid myself of an abcessed tooth. I hate getting shot up and not feeling my face for the rest of the day.
I bought my husband a "Hot Sauce Lover's kit" for Xmas one year (when he first removed the wrapping he thought it said "Hot Lover's Kit" What a dreamer!). At the time we didn't have the variety of peppers needed in order to make all the different types so I smuggled them in from one of my trips to the States. If I don't get this dental mess cleared up soon maybe it will be time for him to make another batch!
I would gladly eat a bag of jalapeno chips before my next dental exam. Anybody willing to ship a box? Or even just a bowl of Xtigers chili?

Sinus Buster has been on the market for a couple years. The makers "claim" it helps everything from headaches, nasal allergies, weight loss and smoking cessation.

capsaicin is an aid to sinus problems and headaches as well as being a good energy booster, at least it has been so in my own personal experience and that of family.

And these people ship internationally! I have never heard of this stuff before. I will definitely be giving it a try as my allergies can be pretty freaking miserable.
Kam, has anybody in your family ever used the one for headaches? I have a good friend here that suffers from migraines and I am wondering if it will work. She is a pepper addict, too!

I am myself, a lifelong sufferer from severe, often times dibilitating migraines. I have tried just about everything under the sun including learning to avoid certain things which have gone a looooong ways in decreasing the numbers of headaches in any given month.
capsaicin comes in a lot of different products, like the one in the link. And yes, it does seem to help lessen them. Like anything else when taken for migraines, it's all important to use it as soon as you suspect you are going to get one. I have actually increased the use of such things as hotsauce and tabasco in my diet and am convinced it has also helped reduce them. If your friend is also an allergy sufferer, it's worth noting that allergy triggers can also be the same thing triggering the migraines.
Also, if your friend is not aware of it, MSG, monosodiumglutomate, is a big culprit in causing migraines. Which, unfortunately is in many many food items, especially premade boxed and frozen, as well as fast food, aka Kentucky Fried Chicken. It is as royal pain to scout it out in one's daily diet, but can prove to be well worth it in the long run. And eventually, it becomes second nature to look for it and to even be able to tell it is in a food just by tasting it. It's the same thing that the "food enhancer" they sell in the spice section as Accent is.
Sorry for going on so long, but I truely empathize and wish I had known some of this stuff years ago.
