I'll never forget being a kid around the 82/83 Spielman, Dewitz years when my dad came home from work on a Friday afternoon and surprised me with the greatest gift I could imagine at the time. It was a 45 record titled Massillon Mash and it was a parody of the classic song Monster Mash. I swear I listened to it 100 times before we went off to the game that night, and at least a million times for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, over the years I lost my copy and forgot about it all together until today, when I was driving and heard The Monster Mash on the radio. Instantaneously it all came back to me and I can't believe it but I actually remember the first verse and chorus after all these years...so here they are,

(to the melody of Monster Mash)
I was witness to a game on a football night,
and my eyes beheld an awesome site,
when the Tiger on the touchdown run broke free,
and his jersey read number 33,

He did the mash, he did the Spielman Mash,
The Massillon Mash, it was gridiron smash,
He did the mash, he ran by in a flash,
he did the mash, it was the Massillon Mash

That's all I've got.., I know the announcer comes on in the end too. Nevertheless, does anybody remember this (I can't find any info at all online), if so, are there any copies available anywhere? Who performed it, etc..? It would be really cool to hear it again, thanks and Go Tigers!!!

I remember it too, I was most amazed that Spielman never seemed to get a big head about it, or forget what his job/role was on the field. He was definitely a throwback player who only knew one way to play. When you stepped on that field, only one type of effort was acceptable.

Go all out.......... or go home!!!

We still have a few of those types around.

If anyone has the 45, I have the technology to turn it into digital media.

I think WTIG may have it. It seems I've heard them play it around the time of the Mckinley.

I wonder if Louie Mischief and/or Roger Latham cut that? I know they recorded something for Massillon football but can't remembe what it was.

It may be a long shot but you could try to search for it on Limewire.com. I have found stuff on there that was shocked to find.

No. Neither had anything to do with it. It was done by a different bunch of guys. They changed their name a couple of times, but they might have been called either "Cruisin'" or "Class of '57" at the time. The band was Bob Von Wyl (drums, lead vocal), Rob Skelly (guitar) , Mark Phillips (keys, sax), and Brad ? (bass). IIRC, Bob wrote the lyrics. The record was cut at the studio in the back of Gattuso's in Canton.

Thanks for the flashback. I remember that studio at Gattusos well as a lot of my close friends and x were musicians, long ago and far away:smile:

I have a 45 from Roger Latham. One-side is Tiger Pride and the other-side is Tiger Stride. Don.t have a record player to play it, though.

Did they do the song that went;

"1st down and 10
Tigers gonna do it again"

"4th down and more
(something something) score"

I think there were a couple other novelty songs in the 70s and early 80s. Then I think there was one in the early 90s (?) with a female voice?

I thought you HATED transfers, PTB ?? :poke: Spielman was the epitomy of a MASSILLON TIGER. I remember his first game on KO's. He was intense.

I remember hearing the "Massillon Mash" driving to work on a cold morning back in the early '80s. I wonder if WHBC might still have it? It's that time of year when the "Massillon Mash" should be played.

I remember both songs listed in this thread, and am fairly confident that my dad has both on 45. I'm pretty sure he played the Massillon Mash for me this time last year. I'll email him and get back to ya.

Also, if we do find the records, we can rip them to digital format to share...
(that little piece of technology made a nice father's day gift).

:2thumbsup: It may be more efficient to go through seeker (fewer handds in the stew) but if he can't help let me know - I can certainly do it, it'll just take a little longer perhaps. Would be nice to see these preserved for historical purposes.,

LOL, my eyes must need a checkup! This is the first time that I've realized we have an Obie Wan and an ObieWon on here. No wonder I've thought to myself that certain posts were uncharacteristic :oops2: Getting old is hell:doh:

It would be great to get this music -- along with the album of the '74 Massillon-McK game -- digitized and made available to those of us to listen to over the Internet. I remember my dad had that album of the '74 game -- trust me, it was the only album he owned as he wasn't much of a music lover! It was an incredible account of an incredible game. I remember our preacher saying that Sunday after the game, that that was what heaven was like: Eddie Bell catching the pass in the last seconds of the game!

I still have the '74 Massillon-McKinley album, although I can't play it anymore either (I have it memorized anyway!). Great, great game to have witnessed.
