Can anyone list the years Massillon has won the State Championship in the AP Poll?
I notice a picture says 22 Times, but I can't find them anywheres.

I'm NOT CERTAIN of the "early" era, but I believe the record book shows Massillon won the championships in 1909, 1916 (Snavely), and 1922 (Stewart).
I'm more certain of:
'36--'40 (Brown)
'40 (Houghton)
'43 (Kammer)
'48--'53 (Mather)
'54 (Harp)
'59, '61 (Strang)
'64-'65 (Bruce)
'70 (Commings)
That's 22....

Why do I see the number 23 sometimes instead of 22?

In '72, I believe we were AP POLL champs also. Thus the 23.
I count only 22 !!!:weightlift:

The AP Poll began in 1947, with Barberton crowned state champs. Before that, teams were named state champs by something called "Popular acclaim". I'm not sure what that means or what the system was for determining state champs.
I think the first state title team that the Tigers count is in 1916. On Smitty's list, Houghten's title was in '41 and we were state champs in 1960 as well.

I didn't think the AP Poll started that early, but thank you for pointing out that it started in 1947.
The only question that arises, what defines a State Champion prior to 1947?

Here are a couple links listing many of the past champs.

Prior to 1947 ("the poll era"), champs were determined by popular acclaim.

Here are the state championships recognized by Massillon historians:
1922, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1970
The claims of 23 state championships include the poll title in 1972.
I, personally, feel that we would be justified in claiming the 1909 (9-0-1) and 1916 (10-0) state championships. For some reason we have never claimed them. Our detractors would love it if we went back in history and claimed two more state championships!

Doesn't McK claim some from around those years? I'm pretty sure they claim the 1915 crown. Heck, they probably claim the 1673 crown.

They claim those titles, but denounce the ones Massillon has earned? Hmmmmm (You'd think the McKinley game was approaching with the increased banter going on. )

Actually, we'll have to look in Week 10 to make sure, but I think one of their banners says 1895.
The 1673 claim might be investigated by the OHSAA and may need to be forfeited because the modern game of "American" football didn't begin to emerge until 1823, with the first game between school teams (college) in 1869.
