Everyone is upset about the Massillon Tiger Football team. I am a fan. Those of us who follow the team ought to be happy no matter what. Things could be worse. We could be the Massillon Volleyball team. The rain cancellation of the J.V. football game gave me the chance to see some of the varsity volleyball game. They lost. I thought they did good. Someone told me they are 0-16 . Maybe we should try and get them help! I felt terrible for the girls. How can we let that happen? They said all the teams in volleyball were doing bad. Are there any Massillon fall sports doing well? I do not have much interest in many Varsity sports, but I feel for the girls. Maybe we should spread the caring for all the high school sports.
It must be terrible to lose like that day in and day out. Here we are worry about 2-4. How about 0-16. Maybe we need to look and see what the problem is. Seems to me 0-16 is a HUGE cry for help!

It doesn't seem like it. I know there was another thread about the golf team doing well, but I don't know how they are doing overall.
Soccer and volleyball always seem to struggle. I'm not sure how cross country is doing, but I don't think they are usually that great either. Girls tennis usually can't hang with the Fed teams.
Our whole athletic department is struggling.

You guys are going to hate to hear me say this, but this thread one of the main reasons I'm a proponent of joining the Federal League, with everything EXCEPT football. I feel our sports teams would get a much needed boost of attention and also gain valuable experience playing against the teams from the Fed. I have ALWAYS said that this. Unfortunately, unless you have a child playing these other sports it is lost in Massillon. Quite unfortunate, but quite true. Perhaps when the AD is done taking out the trash for the Federal League he can concentrate on some of our other sports teams that are important to the youth of Massillon.

Well, maybe you are right. It was terrible. You should have seen the faces of the girls. How can we tolerate this? It is embarressing! Maybe the girls should go into the federal league and not the boys teams. Something should be done. Glad I do not have a kid on those varsity teams. It didn't even look like the girls were having fun. Guess no one cares cause it is not football. Hyocrites. Guess tradition only applies to football, basketball and baseball. I think Massillon should have a well rounded sports program for all varsity sports.

This isn't rocket science. The procedure for hiring a good coach in any sport is the same:
- Identify the best programs in the state.
- Do a little background research on the coaches.
- Identify the coaches that would be a good fit at Massillon.
- Recruit them to come here.
It's time to dump the old way of posting an opening and choosing from whoever happens to apply. You want success? Go get it. We've got a full-time, well-paid AD. It can't take that much time to fill out schedules, and we don't have that many coaching vacancies each year. Good coaches don't cost any more than bad coaches. Let's go get the best.

I have heard from very reliable sources that once again, this is a problem concerning coaching which has caused some girls to quit and play vb in some other league at the rec center, I think that is the place.
We need a better way of honestly finding the best coaches for all positions in our sports programs.

What in God's name is wrong with you, Wan. I cannot BELIEVE that you expect our Athletic Director to add to his duties of Chief of Waste Management - Federal League and actually have him go out and proactively search for the best coaching talent in this area. How DARE you conclude something like that. I've half a mind to have all bartenders in your surrounding area quit serving you for a month over something as crazy as that. Gee WHIZ, man!!! :wall:

Please dont have the AD search for a coach. He can't even handle filling-out the schedule without complaining its too tough. He wants a coach that will be a puppet, like he is, for the fed. I really think we need to get back to the coach being the AD. It is clear that the current coach cannot handle the duties of "Dean of Student Affairs", whatever the hell that is.

Don't be surprised if and when we get a new coach that it will be someone from the Federal League.

Everybody knows that McDaniels is in-line to be the next coach. Blosser wants him and so does a certain group of Tiger supporters. He'd only be a two-three year fix. I'd like to see a Massillon guy get the job, although, I'd bet he have Turner at RB.

Irrespective of his credentials, Thom McDaniels is at the stage in his life and career where he is not what Massillon needs - although he might be a step in the right direction. It's my opinion that Massillon needs a guy who will be here for the long haul, one who will overhaul the program top to bottom, one who will develop and nurture the lower levels, and (most importantly) one who will be given free rein to run the program with a minimum of outside interference.
A meddling administration cut the legs out from under Shepas and pissed on all of us in the process. Let's not allow that to happen again.

We need a Massillon guy and we don't need a 2 or 3 year fix. And frankly, is anyone impressed with Jackson this year?
OW, how do we NOT let that happen again? I am just curious as to what power we the citizens actually have over any such conditions. I dont think much if any.

Coaching and administrative hires are approved by the BOE. The BOE is an elected body. And, it might be pointed out, school levies are approved by the voters.
Given the scale of our program, there is a very good case to be made that hiring a mediocre coach is fiscally irresponsible, and thus malfeasance by the board members and administration. 7 home games x $8 ticket x 2000 fans per game who stay home = $112,000 a year that we lose just in ticket sales from a bad team - not to mention concessions, etc.
Point being, there's no reason to provide either money or opportunity for some people to spend our money.
And if you really want to play hardball, the BC could tell the BOE that they will campaign against the next levy and individual board members. Previous administrations have had no qualms about enlisting the BC's help in their campaigns. Well, that cuts both ways.

This is more of the kind of answer I was looking for in so far as to actually being able to something physicallly and constructively other than making comments on such places as websites and newspapers.

Find out the HONEST agenda of each board member and go from there. (Is the dog ahead of the tail?)

Great points! Now how are YOU going to teach this to those that hire dumb coaches. Cause our biggest success is getting the wrong coaches causing players to quit, skip practices, play without heart, to careless about winning, and whatever.
What type of coach is a good fit for Massillon? It ain't happen' for girls. They need serious HELP. Who wants to coach at a school with a terrible record like soccer or vball? The fed leadge has the best girls sports in this area. Now what?
