Dell/3 weeks old/can't send e-mails...!!!

I couldn't receive e-mails either until I got help through DELL support.

I gave a Dell Tech control of my computer "on line" & watched him try everything to get my e-mail working properly. NO LUCK

Dell wants to charge me $150. to send it in for repair..!!! (NO Fricken way)

I let Massillon Cable take control "on line" & they tried a few things but NO LUCK.

I have an e-mail stuck in the OUTBOX. It won't delete. I think that e-mail is the whole problem

Is DELL VISTA just a hunk of TURD computer???

#1 Does anyone have any idea whats wrong???

#2 Should I send it back for a refund & buy a better computer???

#3 Number 3 involved a BIG HAMMER !!! Even though this option would make me feel the best I can't afford to do it.

Any help out there?

GO TIGERS !!!

Drop me an Email at the address in your PM Inbox and we can discuss this and set something up.

I will try whatever I can to help you out. If I cant I have a friend who can.

I can't drop you an e-mail. It Don't work. I wish....

The mail service is just called "Windows Mail". I used to have a Windows XP computer with "Outlook Express" & never had a problem. I gave that computer away & thought I was upgrading to a DELL Vista.

Isn't VISTA the newest thing???

gotigers1, I disabled the antivirus & firewalls & it didn't help.

We need the e-mail bad right now because we are in the middle of applying to colleges & talking with some coaches by e-mail.

It worked great for 3 weeks & than *poof*

I just figured out that the ADOBE Reader isn't working either:sad:

Thanks for the reply's. Any help would be appreciated very much.

OK, well, you need someone at hand that understands the basics of wandering around in a computer.

This will probably take more than one post due to character limits.

Take a deep breath and dive in…

Enable viewing of Hidden Files and Folders cause if you don't you won't find anything you need to look for.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Click on the Start button. This is the small round button with the Windows flag in the lower left corner.
3. Click on the Control Panel menu option.
4. When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:

If you are in the Classic View do the following:
1. Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
2. Click on the View tab.
3. Go to step 5.

If you are in the Control Panel Home view do the following:
1. Click on the Appearance and Personalization link .
2. Click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
3. Go to step 5.

5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
9. Now Windows Vista is configured to show all hidden files

You also need to take these steps in Safe Mode:

Reboot to Safe Mode by using the F8 method. Reboot and tap the F8 key as the system begins to boot. You will get a DOS screen with various boot choices. Using the arrow keys go up and choose Safe Boot.

Once the computer is fully booted in Safe Mode
Make sure Windows Mail is closed.
Go to Windows Explorer
Then go to "C" drive.
Then go to the Users Folder.
Then go to yourloginname folder and look for
APPDATA

LOCAL

MICROSOFT

WINDOWS MAIL

Copy the entire WindowsMail folder someplace else as a backup, anywhere else really, try the desktop.

Just in case something really goes wrong you do have everything.
Once you have done this then scroll down through that WindowsMail Folder
and you will find the file "WindowsMail.MSMessageStore" listed at the bottom.
Delete that file, all the way out, even from your Recycle Bin.

Now reboot the computer to normal mode.
Open Windows Mail. You should get a message that Windows Mail is recovering removed folders...which at first is scary because you might figure it is all coming back...including that darned "stuck" mail in the Outbox...but hopefully you will be surprised.

All of these moved folders should come back into Windows Mail but as sub folders in one folder labeled Recovered Folders....Inbox(Recovered), Sent(Recovered) and so on. Open each "unlabled" Folder...they should all be empty.

Then open each Recovered Folder...Inbox(Recovered) all your mail should be in the recovered folder. Select All and Move All into the Empty Inbox. Do the same with the Sent(Recovered) folder. DO NOT open the Outbox(Recovered) folder
Once you have done that and made sure all the mail you want to keep is where it should be, go back down to that Recovered Folders box and delete it...all the way out. When you go back into Inbox, everything should be there, as well as everything in the Sent folder.

You may encounter problems with the other boxes also sometime.
If you do, follow the same procedure.

For the short term, try to access your email functions from the webmail page at your ISP

Meanwhile, get a good web-based email address for everybody in the family.
Let me know, and I’ll hook you up to gmail.

Is a wireless network involved here?
That adds a whole other dimension to the problem.

No, do not take a hammer to a perfectly good piece of hardware.

You can:
A. Keep Vista and upgrade it with the patches as they come out. It may turn out to be an OK OS for everyone.

B. Buy a copy of XP Pro and have your machine wiped clean and re-loaded with XP Pro as your OS.

Also, to address the email problem, get your hands on a copy of Outlook XP or Outlook 2007 and use them as your email program instead of Windows Mail. Bear in mind that they are only able to be used on one machine at a time, so no cheating from a friend.

I had great success dealing with an independent computer repair/dealer. If you want his name let me know. I don't know if it is alright to blurt it out here.
