It used to be that Chinese junk refered to a little sailboat. Now it seems to mean any item produced dirt-cheap by slave labor destined for sale to Americans.

Today's recall invoves baby cribs. Toxic pet food, toxic toys, toxic medicines, toxic baby beds. If these products were made by domestic companies, they'd be shut down in a minute. Why in hell do we let the Chinese get away with it?

I do all the buying for a power plant in Texas. We will not pay a dollar a foot less for steelmade in China. It is substandard . It is horrible. If people actually realized what we are getting from China, they would be horrified.

We need to look at our corporate greed for profit. Yes, we love inexpensive goods, but high quality in today's market. The Chinese make goods from American blueprints and dies etc. Lead is like a cheap filler in some products, and thus the Chinese got caught. Quality Control is non-existent their. But more importantly, it is our corporate greed selling us out.

Not too long ago, if you made an item for $2.00 and sold it for $2.50, you made a 50 cent profit. But in today's world, last year your company profited $1 million dollars. Well, this year, we need to profit $5 million. If your company profited $3 million, it is still considered a loss, because you did not meet some forcast set way back earlier in the year! Because you did not reach the goal, you get no bonus or 4% raise this year. Try harder next year. The $3 million you did raise in profit is forgotten about because it was not the $5 million wanted. Sick isn't it?!!!!:puke:

Back home in the states, we all shop at Wal Mart. To me Wal Mart is getting expensive. Where does this end? At some point, something will give, cheap labor practices abroad, low incomes in America, this theory of globalization which brings down the dollar and improves other currencies.

Companies like Mattel, need to come home where they got started and make an honest profit that is not mega-sized, but slow steady growth, and not the instant gratification we are witnessing in corporate America today.

Has the world turned upside down? Today's Independent has a story about a senior Mattel VP who traveled to China to apologize in person and take the blame for the recent recall of millions of Chinese-made toys. Speaking to China's Product Safety Chief, he said, "Mattel takes full responsibility for these recalls and apologizes personally to you."

That's like Jackie Kennedy apologizing to Lee Oswald for causing him so much trouble!

The problem is not the Chinese, Indians, Mexicans, etc. The problem is with the American executives who make the decisions to buy there - and, in many cases, the union workers who drove them to that decision.

China wants to begin the widespread sale of cars in America. If they're disregarding safety practices on toys, I can only imagine what corners they cut with vehicles.

Here's the latest good news about Chinese-made products subject to recall:

Halloween toys - toxicity levels 65 times above the US limit

Auto tires - tread separates at highway speeds

Plastic Cub Scout badges worn around the neck on those goofy braided vinyl lanyards you make in arts & crafts - toxic material

Tiny complimentary motel toothpaste tubes - contains antifreeze

Baby rattles - toxic material plus they're filled with small balls to choke infants when the shoddy seams easily separate during use

Baby cribs - strangulation due to improper design
